Scriptnotes 100 tickets now available

July 1, 2013 News

UPDATE: Sold out. Really quickly. We’ll talk with the Academy folks and see if we can free up more tickets. If so, I’ll try to give fair warning about when they’re available.

It’s not surprising that we have resourceful listeners, and a few of them discovered tickets were actually available on the Academy site starting on Friday. Only a few folks bought them, so I decided not to publicize their availability so that people who were waiting for the promised July 1st date could get tickets.

Tickets for the live taping of the Scriptnotes 100th episode, July 25th in Hollywood, are now available [on the Academy site](http://www.oscars.org/events-exhibitions/events/2013/07/script-notes.html).

This isn’t WWDC, but the combination of free beer and limited space means we’ll probably sell out pretty quickly, so don’t delay.

Tickets are $5, or $3 if you’re a student or Academy member. And if you’re both, well, aren’t you fancy.

The event is presented by the Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting program, and hosted in this strange and great space called the Academy Lab at 6322 DeLongpre Avenue, just south of Arclight Hollywood. It should be a great night. We’ll be announcing our special guests soon.

T-Shirts and Transcripts

June 12, 2013 News

Now available for a limited time: official [Scriptnotes t-shirts](http://store.johnaugust.com).

scriptnotes t-shirts

Designed by Ryan Nelson and screenprinted in Los Angeles, the shirts come in Umbrage Orange and Rational Blue-Gray. ((Currently, rational is outselling umbrage two-to-one.)) Stuart swears the blue one is the softest shirt he’s ever touched. We offer both men’s and women’s sizes.

They’re $19 each, and you can **only get them through June 21st.**

The t-shirts help pay for our transcripts. Since the beginning, every episode of Scriptnotes has come with a full text transcript, posted within a few days of air. Not many podcasts offer free transcripts, but we think they’re important for a few reasons:

1. They’re easily searchable.
2. They’re accessible for the hearing-impaired.
3. They’re available even when you can’t listen to an episode — at work, for example.

We’re only doing one run of t-shirts, so unless you pre-order yours by June 21st, you’re out of luck. Orders will ship starting July 1st.

So if you’d like one, [visit the store](http://store.johnaugust.com).

Scriptnotes Live in LA

June 6, 2013 News, WGA

Craig and I will be doing two live shows this summer in Los Angeles. They’re vastly different, but both should be cool.

**The first is Saturday, June 29th**, part of Craft Day for the Writers Guild Foundation. It’s an all-day event with four different panels of [writers and agents and industry folk](https://www.wgfoundation.org/screenwriting-events/craft-day-2012/) talking about everything screenwriter-related. (That’s why it’s a more-expensive ticket.)

We’re first on the schedule at 10 a.m., so don’t sleep in. It’s at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills, not the WGA headquarters on Fairfax. (This reminder is for my friend Quinn.)

In the spirit of the event, this edition of the podcast will be all about the writing. We’ll share pages from never-produced projects, ((For the Craft Day event, there’s a strong chance we’ll do a handout that’s only for the live audience.)) dig into minutiae, and generally obsess about words. We’ll even try a live version of the Three Page Challenge. If you’re brave enough to have the two of us look at your pages in front of a crowd, this could be your chance.

Tickets are on sale right now for the WGF edition. There’s a good chance it will sell out, so don’t dally. If you’re coming, [get a ticket](https://www.wgfoundation.org/screenwriting-events/craft-day-2012/).

Our **100th Episode Extravaganza on Thursday, July 25** will be a nighttime event at the Academy’s Lab on Vine, just south of Arclight Hollywood. ((We originally thought the 100th was going to be a Sunday event, but this space opened up.)) Craig and I just toured the space, and holy jeebus, it’s amazing. There will be food and alcohol and special guests and surprises I don’t want to spoil.

You only turn 100 once, so we’re not holding anything back. It’s our prom, damnit.

We expect tickets for the 100th will go on sale July 1st. Five bucks. It will sell out, so maybe mark your calendars to be ready to click-click.

Our thanks to the Writers Guild Foundation and the Academy for arranging these events. We look forward to seeing lots of listeners’ faces.

Storytelling in the digital age

May 7, 2013 Los Angeles, News

I’m hosting a panel for the Academy next Wednesday, May 15th, to discuss how technology impacts cinema — both the kinds of stories we tell, and how we tell those stories.

We often think of technology in terms of cinematography and visual effects, but I wanted to look at its impact on writers and editors.

With that goal, we’ve assembled a great group:

– Writer **Mark Boal** (Academy Award nominee for “Zero Dark Thirty”)
– Editors **Maryann Brandon** and **Mary Jo Markey** (“Star Trek Into Darkness”)
– Editor **William Goldenberg** (Academy Award winner for “Argo,” nominee for “Zero Dark Thirty”)
– Writer **Damon Lindelof** (“Star Trek Into Darkness”)
– Editor **Dylan Tichenor** (Academy Award nominee for “Zero Dark Thirty”)

We’ll have clips and quips and anecdotes, along with a conversation about what’s coming next. No word yet on whether any of it will be available online down the road, so try to come if you can.

Tickets are [on sale now][1]. Just $5. And only $3 for students and Academy members.
