WGA election results

September 20, 2009 WGA

While most WGA members have already taken a look at the results, other readers might be curious to see the results of the election, which were [announced Friday afternoon](http://wga.org/content/default.aspx?id=3798).

John Wells was elected president. Tom Schulman, vice president. David N. Weiss, secretary-treasurer.

Nine candidates were elected to WGAW’s Board of Directors: Patric M. Verrone, Howard A. Rodman, Dan Wilcox, Linda Burstyn, Billy Ray, Steven Schwartz, Chip Johannessen, Carleton Eastlake, and Ian Deitchman. ((Eastlake and Deitchman tied. By WGA rules, both will be seated.)) The board is made up of members serving alternating two-year terms, so they’ll be joining eight members already seated.

Congratulations to all the candidates in one of the highest-voting elections in guild history.

In an [earlier post](http://johnaugust.com/archives/2009/on-the-wga-elections), I had steered voters towards Wells, Rodman, Ray, Schwartz and Deitchman, so I was happy to see the five of them selected. I’m also relieved to see a diversity of opinions represented. I think an organization functions best with strong leadership building consensus among competing priorities. I think the combination of John Wells and this board should do that.

How I Became…on NPR

September 16, 2009 Books, Follow Up, Projects

I [tweeted it](https://twitter.com/johnaugust/status/4035360659) while it was happening, but if you missed it, author Steve Hely gave [an interview](http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=112883759) on NPR’s Fresh Air this afternoon. He’s the writer of How I Became a Famous Novelist, [the book I optioned](http://johnaugust.com/archives/2009/how-i-became-a-famous-novelist) a few months ago and hope to make my next movie to write and direct.

As it happens, I’m in New York and had breakfast with Steve this morning. He’s working long hours as a writer on 30 Rock. He spilled no secrets about the new season, but when pressed for details about how they break such dense stories I got this much out of him: colored markers.

Steve’s novel is very funny and [worth a read](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0802170609?ie=UTF8&tag=johnaugustcom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0802170609). I’m just starting to figure out the movie version. Today’s conversation was about Boston, the BooXpo and where to place the disastrous wedding that motivates a large part of the plot.

The Nines on SciFi

September 15, 2009 Projects, The Nines

The Nines will be airing on Britain’s SciFi channel [several times this month](http://www.scifi.co.uk/schedule/index.php?search=nines) — not to be confused with the U.S. SyFy channel, or the other international outlets with similar names.

AMC has the basic cable rights to The Nines for the U.S., but (as far as I know) hasn’t yet aired it. Ryan Reynolds has become a bigger star in the past year, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it works its way into rotation at some point.

A few months ago, I had to oversee a special TV-safe cut of the movie, which replaced the most egregious swearing and excised about three seconds of masturbation. I don’t know which version will be showing in the U.K.
