Saturn Award nomination

Matt Venne emailed me this morning to point out something I would have otherwise missed: The Nines just got a Saturn Award nomination for its DVD.

It’s a cliché to say, “It’s an honor just to be nominated,” but really, it is. And surprising, too. The Nines isn’t an obvious choice at all.

The Saturn Awards are all about science fiction, and while The Nines ultimately fits in that category, the viewer doesn’t really understand why until the last 10 minutes. When we were doing press for the movie, I called it “stealth sci-fi.” Hearing the logline, you wouldn’t guess it goes into Star Trek territory. (I’m spoiling very little to say it does.)

So, my thanks to the nominators, who obviously did watch it and get it.

I’ll have another post up soon about my Facebook forays, but I should point out that The Nines now has a fan page, complete with all of the storyboards from the film.

Congrats John! I’m really looking forward to checking out the DVD =)

Nice nom on the Saturn. I saw it from Blockbuster a few nights ago. Really good script. It surely “packed my saddlebags” or something.

Congratulations. Saturn Awards are very exciting to total nerds like myself.

I was under the impression that Best DVD release, the award you are nominated for, is for a movie that was straight to DVD. Is it open to any movie then with really good DVD extras? No offense, John, but it seems strange to have a Best DVD Release award and award it to a movie that got a theatrical release, however small the release was.

However, from what I have seen, the DVD looks excellent and looking forward to picking it up.

    Congratulations!

    @Scott from Australia:

I don’t know what the criteria are for the category, but at least one of the other contenders (BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON) came out in theaters this year.

  7. Tom Corwine says:

Great. Now, if the Virgin Megastore on Hollywood would stock it, I could go buy it.

Much congratulations, John. It’s deserved… I finally got my copy earlier in the week and watched it, and was thoroughly entertained. Even after all the reading about the film here (assiduously avoiding spoilers the whole way through), I was actually surprised by the resolution. I can see the science-fiction classification, though: it sort of falls into the same vein as a lot of author Spider Robinson’s early stories - set in a mundane, everyday setting (in his case, a bar), but with just enough of something going on to slide into the SF genre. (And in his case as well, you find out the SF connection towards the end of the first cycle.) It really works for The Nines, though, so great to hear of the nomination!

I cannot wait for your next screenplay to get produced because you’ve really exaggerated this agenda pushing with The Nines. It’s just plain boring, annoying and is hurting you in many ways.

  10. AAA says:

Thanks for putting the storyboards on the web - much appreciated.

  11. Angela says:

    Yo John,

Congrats on the Saturn nomination. Hope “The Nines” gets picked.
Thanks also for the storyboards link - those are always cool to look at and helpful for us aspiring board artists out there.

    Rock on.

    Mark P,
Normally I hate when celebrities feign a connection with fans simply to shill their movies, but in this case I believe JA deserves a pass. He obviously cares about connecting with his readers and introducing them to his life.

Given that he was the writer and first-time director of this film, which probably was a struggle to get greenlit in the first place, you can only imagine how much of that life has been devoted to the Nines over the last few years. For him to act like he does not care about its success would be insincere. So for me, the “agenda pushing” is merely an extension of that sincere relationship he has with his readership.

Brad, I agree with everything you said! I’m really a big fan of his work and the fact that John from time to times emphasizes that he’s an A-list writer destroys my whole picture of him. We know that, John, you don’t have to repeat it in every post!

  14. Matt Hader says:

John — We watched the DVD of “The Movie” tonight. Excellent work all around. Congratulations!

  15. Dave says:

Hi - I watched ‘The Nines’ last night and just want to say that I really enjoyed it.
