And I barely know who she is now

At the Grammy Awards last night, my friend Jen pointed to presenter Miley Ray Cyrus and said, “You know she was in Big Fish, right?”

I insisted that was impossible, and immediately tried to pull up IMDb on my iPhone in order to prove her wrong. But the network inside Staples Center was massively overwhelmed, likely with other iPhone users trying to distract themselves from Aretha Franklin’s dress. Well, not so much her dress as her shoulders, which weren’t adequately contained within said dress. The fact that the two acts I was most eager to see — Foo Fighters and Amy Winehouse — were performing from other locations added an extra level of frustration. I got to see Amy Winehouse! On a TV! With a few thousand other folks! I would have live-blogged it, except there was no connection.

Checking later, it turns out my friend was absolutely right: Miley played Ruthie in Big Fish, one of the kids who spies on the witch. Only her credited name was Destiny, which seems an appropriate beginning to her later career as Hannah Montana, #1 movie star in America.

You know who else made her American debut in Big Fish? Marion Cotillard, who’s nominated for an Oscar this year for Ma La Vie En Rose.

So, my advice to a young actress? Be in Big Fish.

Speaking of Big Fish (not that you need my opinion) , I thought you did a nice adaptation of a Wallace’s difficult book–difficult in the same way translating Winston Groom’s Forrest Gump from book to screen must have been. I’ve heard there was a sort of planned sequel (or maybe a prequel). Are you involved with that?

BTW, since I’m voting by proxy, the “no” voters can name their proxy as, either Christian Trokey or David Anthony (323) 421-9177…The “yes” voters can send name their proxy (to the same number) as Patric Verrone.

But thanks for appointing me Chief of the Dissenters–there’ll be a little something extra in your next paycheck.

No one uses iPhone anymore. Nokia N95, 8 GB. Black. ;-) :D

Kanye should win the BAFTA. Kanye was in Big Fish. Kanye made Hannah Montana. Kanye is the most awesome force this world has seen. Kanye will check you for ticks, girl. p.s. How was the Alicia Keys performance live?

Cotillard in La Vie En Rose, one of the best performances last year by far IMHO. Will have to watch Big Fish to figure out who she was…

John, that’s amazing. Miley’s the Big Fish here at the Mouse now and the 3D movie has gone through the roof. We’re gearing up for the next onslaught, that of Prince Caspian. I grew up on Narnia and don’t even have to read the books anymore, I know them so well. The film adaptations are rather dubious but at least the books remain unchanged. An adaptation to the screen should compliment the book, not threaten to overwhelm or dismiss it. So there, dammit.

A co-worker was at the Grammy’s and he had a great time. Nice to see some Old Guard back on the stage, if a little frightening.

Daniel Wallace. The author of ‘Big Fish’. Very disappointed I would imagine with the sales, rather the lack there of it seems from his latest ‘Mr. Sebastion & the Negro Magician.’ But, if any of you out there have not read it. Pick a copy up. It is a wonderful read, At least I think so. It reminded me of something from Rod Sterling’s ‘Twilight Zone’. jaggedlegsix@yahoo.com

As a french (and tongue in cheek) spectator, I would be curious to know, why Marion (who is not physically my cup of tea) becomes suddently hot when she appears in an american movie ?

    Merci beaucoup. ;-)

Watching from home, I really enjoyed the Grammy Awards this year and thought it was one of the best I’ve seen. I enjoyed Foo Fighters and the team of Alicia Keys with John Mayer, but the big highlight for me was the piano duet of Herbie Hancock and Lang Lang on “Rhapsody in Blue.” A truly inspired arrangement of one of my all time favorite pieces.

Well I was one of the <300 “no”s as well. I considered it a symbolic vote as it was quite obvious what the result would be, but there you have it.

Anyway, I do have a mixed sense of relief and disappointment with the deal, but I agree with JH that we could possibly have achieved more. My real problem was the timeframe by which this was all shoved through the membership– and mind you, I don’t blame anyone for this.. it’s just too bad. I saw there was a Q&A going on in the main auditorium during the vote- I wish I had been able to attend it.

I truly hope we didn’t move too fast on this, but the membership has spoken, and I respect the decision… and can’t wait to move on. Three and a half years from now, we’ll all have a better picture if we did the right thing. I do hope we actually get to see the actual language of the new contract before we are asked to vote on it.

Congrats to everyone. Back to work. And onwards we go…

I thought she was hot when I first saw her in “Taxi”

so was roy from the office!

I hope he gets to play someone who’s not a jerk in the future…

So in a way, John kind of made Miley… like how Colbert made Huckabee.

Marion Cotillard got the best actress BAFTA on Sunday for La Vie En Rose, and the first thing my little sister said when she phoned to analyse the awards was “She was in Big Fish!” – she loves that movie, and since she’s redoing her whole room this week, just spent 10 mins removing her teaser 1-sheet from the wall very carefully lest any damage occur to it.

Glad the strikes over – hope your getting-back-to-work goes well.

I’m really, really embarrassed I know this (6 yr old daughter to blame), but Miley Cyrus/Hannha Montana’s given first name is in fact Destiny. She recently had it changed to Miley, which was apparently a nickname.
