GreeneStreet acquires The Nines

At the Berlin Film Festival this morning, GreeneStreet Films International announced that they’d picked up the movie for all markets outside North America. It’s news I’ve been sitting on since basically the day after the Sundance premiere. The company really dug the movie and were very aggressive about getting it, so I’m happy we’re finally announcing it.

Right now, GreeneStreet is busy lining up regional distributors in Europe, Asia and the rest of the world. There’s talk of other festivals, but we’ll see what happens. And no, I don’t know when the movie will be opening in Bucharest. But the minute I find out, I’ll share.

For the U.S. and Canada–and honestly, for EW’s Whitney Pastorek–there’s happy news but no imminent announcement. Suffice to say the companies involved are exactly who I’d hoped they would be. But there’s still a dozen things to sort through. Once I’m allowed to say, trust me, I will.

    Excellent news! :)

And when The Nines finally appears on the DVD rack of some Estonian film shop, I can smugly turn to my friends and say: “Hey, I read this guy’s blog. He once answered a question of mine.”

Because of the success of this & how well it was received, do you plan on writing & directing more of your films? Or will you go back to only writing for a while?

I assume Asia also covers Australasia/Oceania (including both Australia, and New Zealand).

A question though… how exactly does it get distributed? I mean, am I going to be able to rent this film at the local Blockbuster, or will I have to purchase it directly from the GreeneStreet website, or something. Of course, it will be definitely worth purchasing, but it’d be interesting to know how the word gets around about the DVD.

The Nines better not suck John like all your other “films.”

    Caleb (#9):

GreeneStreet sells distribution rights to regional companies, so they would go to one of the Australian (or New Zealand) distributors, who in turn would put it into theaters (presumably), then handle the home video and television release. Ultimately, yes, The Nines will show up at Blockbuster, NetFlix, and wherever quality home video is found.

What’s interesting is that the packaging and materials could vary a lot from country to country. Whenever I’m in Asia, I love to look for Charlie’s Angels, because the local DVDs (or VCDs) use slightly different artwork. (And of course, have different dubbing/subtitles.)

All of this is handled by the regional distribtor.

GreeneStreet is responsible for the accounting. That is, making sure we actually get paid for every DVD sold in Mauritania.

Nice to know! Thanks, John. :)

Hopefully it’ll show at a cinema in the city here!

John—also the DVDs in Asia include the nice camera angle inlcuding multiple rear noggin views :-) They creat a nice in the theater feel to them!

John, I talked to you @ your writing workshop at the Boulder Film Festival. I asked you a rather polemic question about high versus low concept in film. You might even have footage of me.. I believe we came to the conclusion that it is a difference in marketing techniques. I thought of a better question, for you but I welcome anyone to try it..

Check out Meta Section for the 411.

Can’t wait to see the Nines.

  24. Crystal Vales

I apologize it’s not in Meta, although I should have put it there…its #7 (In Dialogue) in Writing process. John, your website is confounding; )

I’m so excited to see it!!
