Hello and welcome. My name is John August.

**Craig Mazin:** My name is Craig Mazin.

**John:** And this is Episode 432 of Scriptnotes. It’s a podcast about screenwriting and things that are interesting to screenwriters. Today on the podcast we’ll be discussing what screenwriters can learn from watching movies and some techniques for making the most of the movies they watch. We’ll also have more advice from listeners about moving to LA and lots of answers for listeners who have written in with questions. And for Scriptnotes Premium members we’ll have a bonus segment on the Mandalorian and what we thought.

**Craig:** Happy New Year, John. We’ve done it again. The calendar has flipped around.

**John:** It has.

**Craig:** We’re still here. And by “we” I mean all of us on the planet. Not necessarily a guarantee at the moment. But somehow, so far, we’re still here.

**John:** We’re down one Iranian general. We’ll see how this all shakes out.

**Craig:** Yep. But you know what? That’s for other people’s podcasts.

**John:** Not our podcast.

**Craig:** No. And in fact I think probably people listen to our podcast to get away from some of that stuff.

**John:** 100%.

**Craig:** Let’s let them.

**John:** Craig, what are your goals, resolutions, plans for 2020?

**Craig:** I’m not a huge resolution guy, mostly because it’s just really a list of things that I hate about myself. That’s kind of the way I look at them. And then really the ultimate resolution is you’re fine. You don’t need resolutions. That said, in the spirit of trying to improve without denying that I’m a good person what I want to work on this year is handling frustration, because I think frustration is something that I feel all the time. Well, I guess frustration usually comes about when you think, right, I know what’s correct and everybody that has authority over me disagrees.

**John:** Yeah.

**Craig:** That’s frustrating. Whether it’s someone giving your notes, or it’s our government, or it’s our union. It doesn’t matter. If somebody is telling you this is the way it’s going to be and you think, no, that’s wrong, it’s frustrating. Which is fine, but I’m going to try and breathe through that a little bit more, because ultimately the frustration doesn’t actually improve anything.

**John:** No.

**Craig:** It just makes me frustrated.

**John:** Yeah. That’s a good overall goal. So no matter what 2020 brings for you that will be a useful thing for you to always be keeping in mind.

**Craig:** Yeah.

**John:** It’s sort of a mindfulness kind of thing. It’s being present in the moment to recognize this is what’s going on, this is why I’m feeling this way. I can choose to act on it or not choose to act on it.

**Craig:** Correct. The frustrating things will continue to occur, no question. And I will feel frustration, but if I’m aware of it then I think I can put it in its proper context. It’s when you’re not aware of these things you don’t even realize what’s happening. You think it’s you and it’s not really you.

**John:** Yeah. I get that. Like you, I don’t really believe in resolutions, but I try to have areas of interest or things I’m going to try to do more of in a new year. And so long time listeners will remember that years ago I wanted to learn more about Austrian white wines, or archery. And so my thing for 2020 is drawing, because I consider myself actually really bad at drawing.

**Craig:** I would love to have a contest with you. You’ll feel so much better about yourself.

**John:** Indeed. So we’ll have a still life drawing competition. And drawing is one of those things I find very difficult to do, but it’s also one of those things I know just with practice you can get much better. So I’m working through it and doing a little drawing every day.

**Craig:** I’m so bad at it. I’m terrible at drawing. Always have been. I can’t even figure out how to take some image in my mind and even begin to recreate it. When you were a kid did you watch this – there was a show on PBS I think, whatever your local channel was, and there was a guy who would tell a story from a kid’s book and then start painting it?

**John:** Absolutely. It was amazing. I also remember he could do things with perspective that were just crazy.

**Craig:** Amazing.

**John:** Connecting lines.

**Craig:** That guy was incredible. And when he would start to draw the picture the thing that would blow my mind is that I had no idea what he was doing. I’m like, OK, there’s lines there. There’s a circle there. There’s stuff there. And then suddenly–

**John:** It all comes together.

**Craig:** Poof. There’s an awesome picture. And I kind of hated him because I knew I could never do that ever.

**John:** But I also recognize that there’s people who feel that same way about writing. They can’t get the words to work right.

**Craig:** Thank god.

**John:** So, we were lucky to have that gift.

**Craig:** That gives us a job.

**John:** Yeah. It’s nice. Also I looked back at 2019 and I could not have predicted most of the things that I would be doing in 2019. So there’s a certain hubris to be looking forward to 2020 saying like, oh, these are the things I’m going to be doing this year. I’m going to be writing a bunch. But what will actually happen with it I’m not quite sure.

**Craig:** Yeah. I mean, future tripping. What’s the point? It does nothing but upset you.

**John:** It will.

**Craig:** People are disappointing. Even our fans.

**John:** So Craig, one thing I’ve done in 2019 which was helpful and I’m definitely carrying it with me into the new year is when I watch a movie I try to take some notes afterwards about what worked in that movie for me. And so this first segment I want to talk through this idea of what we can learn from movies.

So I think so often we’re talking about screenplays or like reading scripts and all that stuff but really what all of us do is we watch movies and we take things from movies. And I want to have a discussion about how to be a little bit more systematic and really thoughtful about what we’re taking from movies as we finish watching a film.

**Craig:** Mindful viewing of movies. That’s a good idea. Everybody that does what we do uses other movies as examples or inspiration. Sometimes we use them as negative examples.

**John:** Of course.

**Craig:** But the movies that we love we tend to really think about carefully. It’s a little bit like what you and I do when we walk through one of these movies.

**John:** Exactly. And so we did our walkthrough of Die Hard and that was really trying to look systematically at what the movie was doing and how the movie was working. That’s a thing that people can do by themselves with every movie that they watch. And really if you’re aspiring to be a screenwriter, or you are a screenwriter, it’s not a bad practice to get into with everything. So if you watch a pilot of a TV show or you watch a movie, just take a few minutes and really look at how that movie worked. Because when you don’t do that it tends to be only the most recent thing you’ve watched is the only example you have in your head. And if you do it more systematically it will work for everything.

**Craig:** Yeah.

**John:** So my questions I want to ask myself when I finish a movie is what’s working in it, what’s not working for you in it? If it’s not working why is it not working? Really troubleshoot for yourself what didn’t click for you and why didn’t it click. And what could you have done differently in that movie to make it click?

Really you’re trying to focus on the how questions. How is the movie working and how could the movie be working better if you were to have access to the engine underneath it?

**Craig:** Yeah. There’s this saying that people put out there about social media. Don’t compare your inside to other people’s outside. And sometimes if we watch movies, particularly ones that we love, and we don’t think about them in a gear-watch-works way then we may suffer from that. We may think, OK, I’m currently sitting here with a pile of tiny little gears and cogs and springs and it’s not a watch. And I just saw the most beautiful watch. I suck.

If you start to really look at it from the point of view of a craftsperson then you can see that they had the same problems and limitations you did. And it’s really helpful I think to start to strip away stuff that isn’t purely writing. Start to strip away the lighting. Start to strip away the music. Start to strip away the performances. And just think about the movements of things that were commanded by text, because that’s what you’re doing.

**John:** Absolutely. So let’s start at the fundamental. Let’s start at the hero. Let’s take a look at who the hero is in this story and what the function of that hero is. So, as the viewer do you understand who that hero is? What they want? Both on a macro scale, the overall arc of their journey through the story, but on a micro level. On a scene-by-scene, moment-by-moment do you understand what that hero wants? And if you do how is that being communicated? What information are they giving you to let you know what that hero wants?

And that is purely craft. That is the screenwriter’s job is to make it clear what that central character is trying to go after.

**Craig:** And it’s perfectly reasonable to study how people do that elegantly. So Damon Lindelof and his team did Watchmen which I loved and a lot of people do. And one of the things that I thought was so good about it was what I call non-expository exposition. They were so clever – and that is craft – about making the information release interesting and meaningful beyond just you need to know this. They managed to weave it into other things. Really good lessons learned from that. And I think that when we watch movies it’s fair to look at those really hardcore craft things and say, oh, you know what I’m not going to steal the way, like their movie there, but I’m going to steal their ambition. Like they clearly aspire to do better than the usual. I should, too.

**John:** Absolutely. Watchmen is a great example for my next question which is how does the hero fit the story. So thinking about what story do you want to tell and which hero is the appropriate hero for telling that story. The fit between hero and world in Watchmen could not have been better. So you had a character whose grandfather was part of this sort of long story, this long struggle, to get us up to this present moment. So she was uniquely qualified to be the central character in the story.

**Craig:** And you can sometimes struggle when you watch a movie because you’re looking at the wrong person. This is another thing that movies do all the time, we just don’t notice it until we really watch meaningfully. And that is they have us following somebody that isn’t the hero. We think they’re the hero. They’re not the hero.

Sometimes the hero is this side character or somebody we think of as a side character because they’re not occupying this huge space in the story. But the story is really about this smaller – I mean, the most famous example that people kick around is who is Ferris Bueller about? Who is the hero of Ferries Bueller? And it’s Cameron. It’s the friend. Because he’s the only one that has a choice to make. He is the only one who has a problem, who is running away from his problem, who has to confront his problem, and overcome his problem. But he’s not Ferris Bueller. He’s not in the title. Nor is he the guy we watch in the beginning, or the end. It seems like Ferris Bueller is the hero but he’s not. So meaningful watching helps you get there.

**John:** Absolutely. And finding those situations where the central character of Ferris Bueller is not the protagonist. It’s not the one that actually undergoes the transformation, the journey. So really being deliberate to look at sort of who is playing what role in the story. And once you do that figure out how are they introduced. How are you as a viewer first introduced to these characters? And how quickly do you understand who they are and why you should be interested in them. Those initial scenes of meeting those characters we all know as writers are so crucial. Well, how did this film do it? And ask yourself what are the other choices they could have made and why was this the right choice or the wrong choice?

**Craig:** Introductions are something that I think writers probably glide past all the time and should not. Maybe it’s because they think their “directing on the page.” As you know I’m a huge fan of directing on the page. I think that’s our job. And I think of movies that are delightful and how often their delight is conveyed to us through an introduction of a character. Like so when we first meet Jack Sparrow in the very first Pirates of the Caribbean movie he’s on this ship, he is a proud pirate, he seems like just one of those plot armored heroes where no wrong can. And then you reveal that his boat is sinking and he literally steps off the top of it onto a deck as it disappears below the waves. That says so much not just about him but about this world, the tone. It’s delightful.

**John:** Yes.

**Craig:** In the second movie I believe he shoots his way out of a coffin. It’s another just – it’s surprising. So, another excellent thing to keep an eye on for all movies. And sometimes they’re not flashy like that. The introduction of the family in Parasite–

**John:** Yes.

**Craig:** Spectacular. Just the way that they’re living in a basement sort of, and how their day is consumed by trying to steal wifi. Brilliant.

**John:** It’s really talk about all these aspects, like who are the right characters for the story, how are we meeting these characters, and do we understand what they want? And Parasite is a great example of how you’re seeing all three of those things in one initial sequence that’s really telling you this is their situation. These are the people you’re going to be watching through the course of the story.

**Craig:** Yeah. If you’re watching a movie and you feel good at the end of a scene, stop. I don’t mean to say that you should do this the first time you see it. But when it’s time to watch it meaningfully and thoughtfully if the scene works for you stop and then roll back and then watch it again. And just think about the layers and why.

This is so much more important than why – I feel like our culture is just obsessed with people explaining why they hate things. They’re rewarded for it, I guess. It teaches you very little. It really does. I’ll tell you, more than anything when I watch something I don’t like I get scared. I get scared because I think would I have done the exact same thing in that situation? How would I have done it differently? I’m starting to get scared. Better to look at things you love.

**John:** Looking at any of these characters, a useful metric for me is could I describe this character independently of the actor? Do I have enough information about that character at the start and as the story progresses that I could talk about that character independently of the actor who is playing him? So I think Jack Sparrow is actually a great example. Because we think of him as Johnny Depp, but that character is very, very specific independently of the performance of Johnny Depp.

Same with all the family members in Parasite whose names I don’t know. And so they are such strongly drawn characters that I don’t have to fall back on a description of who the actor was playing them to be able to describe them as what they’re trying to do in the story.

**Craig:** Yeah. I mean, Disney, the folks who are running Disney very famously they knew they had hired Johnny Depp and when they saw what he was doing and what he looked like and how he sounded and walked they freaked out, because that was not some sort of inevitable thing that travels out of Johnny Depp. That was something specific and different. And it is a character that could be played by another person. It could be.

Would it have been played the same way? No.

**John:** No.

**Craig:** I think he was perfect. I really do. But in some alternate universe someone else is playing it and people also love the movie.

**John:** Agreed. So we talked about the hero, let’s talk about the antagonist. How does the antagonist arrive in the story? How do they challenge the hero? And in movies that work well the antagonist is so specific to the story and so specific to the hero that it’s hard to imagine them existing outside of that universe. So we talk about this in Die Hard. We talk about it in almost any of the movies we love, they have a villain or a chief character who is challenging the hero who is so specific to that story. So always look for how is that antagonist introduced and how specifically drawn are they to challenge your hero in the story.

**Craig:** And if it works for you, accept that. You know, you could fall into a trap of trying to fit things into categories and saying, well, sometimes I’ll see people say, “You know, I really liked this movie but it doesn’t follow the rule of blankety-blank.” Correct. It does not. Because that is not a rule. The rule that you just cited isn’t a rule. There are movies where the villain, the antagonist, is the weather. There are movies where it’s a dog. There’s movies where it’s a ghost. There’s movies where it’s fate. There’s movies where it’s the person you love the most.

It’s defined in so many different ways, so start with the fact that it worked. And then say, OK, I’ve just learned a new way of conceiving of what an antagonist is. The word villain, also, a bit of a trap.

**John:** Agreed. So then we have our characters. Let’s talk about the storytelling of the movie. So, how quickly and how well does it establish who is important and what they’re going after? How does the movie move between storylines? And this I think is the most crucial kind of craft question. Obviously there’s multiple things that are going to be happening. How does the movie decide how to switch back and forth between? Does it limit POV to only things that the hero knows? Or does the audience have omniscient POV? How is it working in terms of telling you its story? And how quickly – going back to the Pirates example – does it set up what its tone and genre are really going to be?

And these are fundamental things. And if the movie is not working you’re going to notice it here.

**Craig:** Correct. And that’s why it’s so important to carefully watch a movie that is working for you. Because when it is working it is designed for you to not notice any seams whatsoever. You won’t notice cuts. You won’t notice that one scene has changed to another. You won’t notice transitions. It will all seem inevitable and purposeful and of a single whole.

So take the time to now go, OK, but it’s not. So let’s be amateur magicians that are invited to the magic castle and we’re asking the really good sleight of hand guy, OK, slow it down for me. Let me see it bit by bit, move by move. That’s how you’re going to learn.

**John:** Absolutely. The last bit of technique which I think is so crucial to be monitoring is how does the movie surprise you? Because by this point you’ve watched thousands of movies. You are a sophisticated movie viewer. The movies that succeed are the ones that still manage to surprise you. That you feel like you’re caught up with them and they still have some more tricks up their sleeve. So how do they do that? How did they deceive you in a way that got you to that moment of surprise?

And those are the moments to really go back and really figure out what was the set up that got you to that misunderstanding.

**Craig:** Setups, payoffs, misdirections, but also just as important clues, hints. We will not feel as satisfied if there were no hints. I was watching, so Knives Out, written and directed by our friend Rian Johnson, which has done extraordinarily well and for good reason. I watched it again and there’s a moment that happens during the reading of the will when the lawyer announces that the old man has left all of his stuff, all of it, to Marta, his nurse. There’s one little thing that happens with one character that is a clue. But you sure don’t know it at the time because it’s a clever clue. It’s a smart clue. And I thought, OK, there’s intelligence at work and there’s also an understanding of how fair play actually improves the misdirection and the surprise.

It is, again, a very calculated, careful crafted bit. And at its best moviemaking is about marrying this really hardcore calculating craft with a kind of inspired wild creative abandon.

**John:** Yeah.

**Craig:** And that’s what good things like Knives Out do.

**John:** Absolutely. And I think a crucial thing about Knives Out is to remember like, so Rian Johnson is both the writer and the director. That scene is incredibly well directed, but that moment that you’re describing is a written moment.

**Craig:** Yes.

**John:** It was very clearly an idea that occurred in the writing stage of this. And so I think it’s also great to have a separate discussion about what works on a directing level, on a cinematography level, on casting, costuming. Think about all those things but as a separate conversation. Really just focus on what is it about the storytelling, about the writing that is working for you so well in this part of the process.

**Craig:** Whodunits are amazing for this. If you want to really study the craft of surprise and misdirection just watch whodunits. Because that’s all they’re about. I mean, they are about some other things occasionally. I mean, Knives Out has a certain commentary about class and what it means to be an immigrant in the United States and inherited wealth versus earned wealth. All of that stuff is there. But mostly it’s about the machinery of who did it. And that’s what’s so satisfying about it.

**John:** Well it’s also a meta examination of sort of the whodunit as a genre, because it ultimately is not so much a whodunit.

**Craig:** Correct. It’s sort of like we know who did it, but whodunit. And I love those movies because they really do instruct you. Comedies, also, I will say comedies are oftentimes–

**John:** Well, there’s setup, payoff.

**Craig:** It’s machinery.

**John:** Yeah, it’s machinery behind.

**Craig:** Study the machinery.

**John:** So we’ve watched the movie and now we’re trying to focus on it. Obviously if you have someone there to go have a drink with afterwards you can talk through all that stuff, which is great. But if you’re watching the movie by yourself what I found to be really helpful and I’ve started doing it much more for the last couple months is just one page of notes, bullet points of like these were the things I learned from this movie. And if it’s a movie that I loved, great. These are some things I loved and some things that this filmmaker was able to do in the writing that really worked for me and things I wanted to remember from this.

If it’s a movie I didn’t love, I find that also to be really helpful. This thing they tried to do just did not work, or I was confused by these moments. This isn’t a review. This is like what is it that you can take from this thing you just watched and apply to your own work. And what you said before about when you watch a movie that’s not working you get that moment of fear. Would I have made the same mistakes? And as I look at the movies that didn’t work, yeah, I definitely see some things where I probably would have tried that in that situation, too. So it’s helpful. It’s a chance to sort of have the experience of having made that movie that didn’t work and learn from it without having spent years of your life making a movie that didn’t work.

**Craig:** How nice is that, right? I mean, it’s hard enough doing these things. So if there’s anything we can do to save ourselves from a trap. By the way, we probably can’t. I mean, if we’re going to fall into a trap we’re going to fall into a trap. But studying other people’s good stuff but help I think but make us better. And if you do see, well, I guess here is how I would put it with the negative things. I do think of these things as relationships. We have a relationship with something. A movie. This is why very, very smart, cultured, tasteful people can have violent disagreements about the same movie. Because it’s not about the movie being good or bad, or you being a good or bad viewer. It’s about this unique relationship that forms between you and it, which is the sum of all of what it is and all of what you are.

So, when we watch these things and we find ourselves in a good or bad relationship, what’s worthy there is it will help us craft something that we have a good relationship with as we write. Because I’ve written things before where I just thought I’m fighting with this thing. I mean, this thing doesn’t want to exist, or it shouldn’t exist, but I’m being paid to make it exist and I am fighting with it. I am at war. And it’s not a good feeling. Figuring out how to have a good relationship with what you’re writing is something that you might be able to be helped to do by thinking about the good relationships you’ve had with other things.

**John:** Absolutely. One unique thing about the time people are living in now versus when we were starting out is that pretty much any movie you’ve really enjoyed you can read the screenplay of. And so if you have questions about how it worked on the page you can go back and look at those scripts. This is the part where you and I come clean and say we don’t read the scripts. We’re not reading those For Your Consideration scripts.

**Craig:** No.

**John:** But they’re available there for people to read. And it was very important for me when I was starting to write to read a bunch of those scripts. And so definitely go out and read those scripts if you are new to the craft and learning how it all works.

Craig and I tend to watch movies and we can sort of see the script coming through there. So, obviously we don’t know what the drama was and what changed on the set, but we get a pretty sense of what the storytelling was on the page that led to that movie. But if you’re new to this that’s a great place to start. And so I would recommend watch the movie, read the script, and see how it compares. Or if there’s something that you’ve not seen, reverse it sometimes and read the script, see the movie in your head, and then watch the final movie to see sort of how the filmmakers did the job of converting that screenplay into a movie.

**Craig:** I mean, really what you’re advising people to do is their homework.

**John:** Yes.

**Craig:** Do you homework, people.

**John:** Yeah.

**Craig:** This is a job. They don’t just pay you for nothing.

**John:** And I guess–

**Craig:** You got to know stuff.

**John:** In my taking notes on movies that I’m watching now I’m just sort of trying to do my homework a little bit more. I feel like I’ve been letting it slide for a few years and just like watching the movie just as a fan. That’s why I like to watch a movie just to enjoy it, but then afterwards take those notes. I’m not taking notes during it.

**Craig:** Well that’s a really good way to keep yourself relevant also. I think as people get older sometimes we think of them as losing a step or losing some zip on their fastballs, as we say, but sometimes I think all that’s happening is they’ve just disconnected from the churn of culture and what is relevant and what’s happening around us that is new and different. Because people are constantly kicking over the old stuff.

Like for instance what Rian did with Knives Out. It sort of kicks over the old stuff a bit. And if you’re not paying attention to that you will just make more old stuff. Sometimes I read things, I’m sure you have too, where a studio will say we really like this idea. It’s not quite working. Can you fix it? And you read it and you think, well, I get it. This is a good idea. It feels like it was written 30 years ago.

**John:** Yep.

**Craig:** It just seems like whoever wrote this stopped at some point and you can’t.

**John:** Move forward.

**Craig:** Move forward.

**John:** On the topic of moving we have some new responses about moving to Los Angeles.

**Craig:** Segue Man.

**John:** This is a follow up from Episode 428. Listener Mark was considering moving from NYC to Los Angeles and wanted advice. Craig and I moved so long ago that we did not have relevant advice, but we figured our listeners did. We had three people write in this last week with some good advice. Craig, do you want to start us off with what Eric wrote?

**Craig:** Sure. Eric writes, “I made the same move seven years ago after living in NYC for 10 years. It was not easy. Here are a few ideas about what made the transition easier in terms of writing and just being. First, get into a writing group. Can’t stress this enough. If you can’t find one, I will either join you or find one for you.” What a nice guy.

“My writing group was responsible for two managers and an agent for me. And it forces you to read scripts, watch movies, write pages.”

**John:** Let’s pause here. Writing groups are not a thing that I grew up with. They weren’t part of this. But Megan McDonnell and Megana Rao, our Scriptnotes producers, both have sworn by their writing groups because it keeps them accountable. It is people you’re seeing on a regular basis and you’re doing the work and you’re showing up and you’re giving honest feedback and criticism. So, yes on writing groups.

**Craig:** Writing groups are a good way to socialize yourself as a writer. When you get a new puppy you’re supposed to put it in a room with other puppies so it doesn’t not know other things. I think a lot of writers grow up alone in rooms like little mushrooms. And then they turn a script in and someone says something and they just collapse. Because they haven’t gone through the socialization process. So I agree. I mean, look, unless you really are somebody that is fully functional and self-aware on your own, or you have a writing partner that you really trust and love, this does seem like a good idea.

Eric then adds, “Get a job with value.” Oh, buddy, I love that advice. “Value can be defined many ways. Money. Flexibility. Proximity to industry. Exposure to writing or writers. I freelance edit commercials. And it exposed me to lots of places in the city and lots of creative people who make ads.”

**John:** Great.

**Craig:** Good. You know me. Take plan B, make a plan A. “Community. Writing and editing can be extremely lonely. It’s important to have people. Peruse LA Mag for fun events. The Comedy Bureau website was useful for me. LA has amazing free comedy shows every day of the week.”

Well, I would just stay home alone and play videogames, but.

**John:** Yeah. But he’s saying maybe you should get out.

**Craig:** Maybe? Maybe I need Eric’s advice. Oh, and just on time Eric suggests, “Mental health, healthcare. SCCC is a great resource.” And we’ll put a link to that in the show notes. Sliding scale therapy. Also Obamacare is wonderful in LA. Sort this out as soon as possible before it gets completely gutted in the case of disaster next November. You’ll be happy you did.” I think that’s probably good advice.

“California Driver’s license. Trust me. Get one.”

**John:** Yeah, you’re supposed to do it like right away when you move to Los Angeles. No one kind of does, but you should. The same thing about your plates. You’re supposed to change your plates right away, too.

**Craig:** I think they give you a six-month grace period or something. The reason that I took a little bit of time was because it costs more. So when I came out here with my Jersey license and Jersey plates I was like, oh, that’s interesting. Registration in California, quite a bit more.

**John:** Yeah.

**Craig:** So, you know, but I got there. “Apartment. There are some neighborhoods that are better for writers, newly arrived creative types. Lots written about this. If you cannot figure this out, email me. I will walk you through it. This is important. I don’t want to hear you landed in Reseda or Alhambra. No offense to those places.”

**John:** That is correct. So, there are places that are way on the outskirts of Los Angeles where you might as well not be in Los Angeles. You’re going to be driving for forever and you’re not really here.

**Craig:** Yeah. Just stay home at that point. “Coffee shops. There are articles about the best coffee shops to write at. Find them. Read them. Also libraries. Do not write at home. Remember, people need people.”

**John:** I write at home.

**Craig:** I mean, I don’t need people. People who don’t need people. Are the luckiest people.

“Patience and humility. LA is a great, inspiring, fascinating, beautiful city. Go on all the hikes and to all the beaches, Mark. Simultaneously, it can make you feel like a complete isolated failure and wreck of a human being and a total hack imposter. Listen to that song It Never Rains in Southern California if you don’t believe me. With lots of luck and labor your fortunes may change. Or maybe they won’t. But all you can do is write. Be patient. Be humble. Be compassionate to your fellow writers and to yourself. Best of luck to you, Mark.”

Eric seems like a very nice guy.

**John:** Eric is a very nice guy. That was very generous, very giving.

**Craig:** I would be so upset if he turned out to be a serial killer. I’d be so bummed out.

**John:** I would be, yeah.

**Craig:** Eric…

**John:** Frustrating.

**Craig:** I would be frustrated. But only briefly.

**John:** Yes, indeed.

**Craig:** And then I’d be OK.

**John:** Kristen writes, “I moved to Los Angeles in 2017 and coming from New York it had been five years since I had last driven. The freeways intimidated my new driver self. Someone gave me the tip to use the ‘avoid highways’ option in Google Maps and it changed everything. While it took me longer to get places I was able to slowly get comfortable with driving and as a bonus I was able to learn the neighborhoods and landmarks in the city that I never would have seen if I’d only stuck to the highways.

“Now over two years in I’m happy to report I am back driving as a highway pro.”

**Craig:** Well that’s good. I mean, the important thing is that it had a happy ending. Kristen is out there like all the rest of the lunatics, changing lanes too frequently and too quickly on our freeways. So that is good advice, Kristen.

Kate writes, “First, go in with a long haul mindset. While LA is a great place to further your career, it most likely won’t happen overnight. I made the naïve mistake of thinking that my networking skills and all-consuming desire to work in Hollywood would put me on the fast track to a career in writing and producing. So I was not mentally prepared for the opposite to be true. It took months and months of networking to get my foot in the door as an entry level assistant and even longer to form meaningful personal relationships. I’ve since learned that the counterparts to passion and enthusiasm are patience and consistency. All of which are needed to build a career in the entertainment industry.”

Patience and consistency is pretty much spot on.

**John:** That’s really pretty great.

**Craig:** I mean, that’s exactly right.

**John:** But I mean, the four points she has – passion, enthusiasm, patience, and consistency. That will do a lot.

**Craig:** Yeah. I mean, throw a little talent in there and–

**John:** Yeah, hey.

**Craig:** You’re pretty much good to go for decades. “Second, invest time in an activity unrelated to screenwriting. Be it hiking.” Hmm. “Salsa dancing.” Hmm. “Pottery.” Hmm. “Board games.”

**John:** Yes!

**Craig:** Hey! “Etc. Carve out a few hours each week for something that adds texture to your life and gives your mind a break. Not only will it energize you. It’s what will keep you sane during the ups and downs that you will inevitably face over time.”

**John:** I agree with her here. And a point I would add is that we were just talking about movies. Before you moved to Los Angeles movies were probably your escape time and that was the fun thing you did. You’re still going to go see a bunch of movies, but that is kind of also your work. So finding something that is not your work is a really good idea. And going back to Eric’s letter, hiking in Los Angeles is actually great and is a thing that you discover pretty quickly. Oh, there’s actually really good places to hike around here. If you don’t have a dog, you sort of get exposure to dogs because there’s dogs everywhere. So getting outdoors is crucial here and that would be a good first thing to do.

**Craig:** Moving around. Breathing. Seeing things. All good. Having a friend or two, crucial. Yeah, for anybody. By the way, this is – it doesn’t really matter if you want to be in LA, you want to write, or you want to be a plumber in New Zealand. Get outside. Breathe a little bit. Have some people in your life. Don’t be alone.

**John:** So a thing that I did in 2019 which I had not anticipated doing was I got into indoor bouldering. So that’s climbing in indoor gyms. And I ended up meeting some Scriptnotes listeners there who recognized me from the podcast, or because I was wearing my Scriptnotes t-shirt always, and talking with them. And so one of them said that when he moved to Los Angeles all the friends he first met were at the climbing gym because the climbing gym is a good place to sort of hang out with other people who aren’t drinking and there’s so much down time when you’re climbing. It was a good mingling spot. And again crucially not a screenwriting-focused thing.

So, finding a place to hang out with other people is a really good idea.

**Craig:** Yeah. And when it’s built around an activity all the pressure of we’re here to meet each other is gone. That’s why networking, just the word alone–

**John:** Drives me crazy.

**Craig:** Just gives me spinal shivers. Because I don’t even know what it is. I literally don’t know. Are we all here to exchange ambitions? What are we doing? If we acknowledge that this is networking isn’t that defeating the purpose of the – shouldn’t we just be meeting each other?

**John:** Yeah.

**Craig:** And talking to each other and finding something interesting about each other that does not accrue to our personal benefit?

**John:** Yep.

**Craig:** That would be nice.

**John:** It would be nice. Challenging to do. All right, so in addition to all this great listener advice, advice from listeners, we have questions that came in from listeners. The mailbag has been full, so let’s get to some of these questions that have been stacked in here.

**Craig:** Now we get to give the advice.

**John:** We do.

**Craig:** All right.

**John:** On Episode 428 a listener wrote in saying, “Regarding the email from Derek about being in a mini room and assigned a script. He referenced being asked to write the first draft of an episode that largely made it into what aired, but was then denied credit. Aren’t the companies producing the television shows WGA signatories? Are there fines for violating the WGA agreements that require them to pay for writing? If talking to the business producer doesn’t work it would seem helpful for the writer to be able to go to the WGA for help on this even if you’re not yet in the guild. And if there were fines for signatories for violations, say the amount of the WGA minimum for a TV episode for the infraction, there might be financial incentives to address this upfront and get an agreement on credit worked out.”

So, Craig, a bunch packed together here.

**Craig:** Yeah, but just the answer to all those questions is yep.

**John:** Yep. And complicated.

**Craig:** Correct. Yep in a perfect world. Yeah. You’re not allowed – if you’re a signatory you can’t ask people to do free work like that. And whether you’re in the guild or not if somebody is asking you to work for free on a guild-covered project you have the right to call the guild and say, oh, red flag. And there are penalties. And you can’t do these things. And…

**John:** Ultimately let’s say that this writer, so Derek went to the WGA saying like they had me do guild-covered work. This is a violation. The WGA then goes after that signatory, but goes through an arbitration process. And so these cases do happen.

**Craig:** Yep. They can’t just take your word for it. They have to investigate.

**John:** Yes. And so it’s not a simple matter of there’s a fine and it’s all figured out. It goes through a whole process. But I can tell you as someone who was on the board and I get to see all the documents, that does happen. So yes it does happen. Yes Derek should probably report it.

**Craig:** Well, it’s really, you know, a question for the circumstances there because there are times when a small justice will not be worth it because a large injustice will be perpetrated against you as a result. I’m not one of those people who says keep your head down and don’t snitch and all that sort of thing. But if there is a situation like this where you think, OK, there’s a great opportunity for me to kind of move onwards and upwards without fighting this all the way to City Hall then maybe that’s the kind of jujitsu way here. I mean, it happened to me on the very first thing I did where there was a credit involved. There was an unfair imposition of credit. And I chose to just let it go and keep on moving and that was the smart decision.

**John:** Here’s the other thing that’s complicated about this situation is that while the signatory, this company, is the one who is at fault, the actual person who was allowing this assignment to happen is a WGA member.

**Craig:** Correct.

**John:** And that is the weird problem here is that taking a complaint of a non-member against a member and having to sort it all out. It is genuinely complicated.

**Craig:** Yeah. I mean, Disney Television has no awareness whatsoever that the showrunner of one of their shows asked one of the assistants to do a first draft of something. No clue. When they hear about that they’ll go, oh, yeah, no that’s terrible. Can’t do that. Sure. But now back on the ground where all the boots on the ground are and people get hired and fired and let go, it’s just something to think about.

But the think I guess to our listener is the world isn’t insane. Yes. There are rules. And they are broken frequently. Just like the speed limit.

Josh asks, “Is it normal for a literary manager or agent to request material from a writer and then they never follow up? I’ve experienced plenty of silence with cold queries. I don’t even have a problem with it when the material is initially requested from a cold query. However recently I’ve had reps from Verve and other places reach out to me unsolicited and request scripts. Then crickets. I’ve sent a single follow up when I didn’t hear anything and most of those have gone ignored, too.”

So, Josh is wondering what do you do in a situation like this and what does this mean, John. What do you think it means?

**John:** I think it means that they’re not that into you.

**Craig:** Yeah.

**John:** Josh, this happens all the time. So, I would say this is probably more the norm than the exception is that someone should just not follow up with you and not get back to you. That’s just going to happen a lot. And so I think you can feel better knowing that it’s not just you. It does happen a lot. They probably read it. It probably didn’t spark for them. That’s OK. But I remember being in your situation.

So, the very first thing I’d written, I had a producer friend who took it into CAA to have them read it and see if they wanted to represent me. And they just never got back to her and never got back to me. I kept waiting. This is sort of pre-email really. I kept waiting for is there going to be a voicemail saying that they read it and that they loved it and whatever. And it just never happened.

**Craig:** It turns out that life is very simple. And Josh is clearly a thinking person. His gears are spinning here. He’s trying to solve this problem and untie this Gordian knot. But in fact it’s not a knot at all. It’s very simple. People will ask to read something because someone said to them, “Oh, you should read this guy’s thing.” That’s why. And so they do. And then they read it and they go, OK, either we hated it, or we loved it, or this or that, but the point is we think, yeah, probably not interested in representing him at this time based on this. So, yeah. That decision is done. Now what are we having for lunch.

There is no consideration to then go, OK, somebody call him back, make him feel good. That’s it. Just presume it’s a no until it’s a yes. And presume it’s a no until somebody pays you money.

**John:** Yeah. And thinking about it from the agent who requested your script’s perspective. What email did they send you saying like, hey, thank you for sending the thing, we didn’t really like it.

**Craig:** Right. Exactly.

**John:** So the polite thing for them to do is just sort of like just never follow up with you again.

**Craig:** Yeah. The email would be, “I thought I would like this. I didn’t. You surprised me in a bad way.” [laughs] Yeah, so better to just not send anything. That’s what’s going on there.

**John:** Gail from New Jersey asks, “I have a question pertaining to China and freedom of speech. Depending on the job field, what an employee says about China in and out of the professional work environment can be detrimental. Do screenwriters go through vetting when writing screenplays for studios? Are there certain ideas or concepts that you think would never be able to happen because it would upset China? Do you feel like this limitation is imposing on your creativity and rights as Americans?”

This is a big topic.

**Craig:** That’s a big topic.

**John:** Probably worth its own episode at some point.

**Craig:** I mean, just a general summary on it. I don’t know if anyone is being vetted per se. I don’t think anyone is being vetted in that regard. But, yeah, are there certain ideas or concepts that you would never be able to do because it would upset China. Yep. No question. Go ahead and try and make some sort of movie about Tiananmen Square and see how far you get. Because Chinese financing is so deeply intertwined with Hollywood at this point. And I’m not even talking about the entire exhibition side of things where if you are allowed into the Chinese theatrical market you can make an enormous amount of money that way.

Does it impose on my creativity? No. I can create whatever I want. If I want to write a book I’ll just write a book about it. Does it impose on my rights? I don’t have a right to have my script bought by anyone. But certainly if I want to work with big studios and big producers in Hollywood, yeah. It’s unfortunately a thing.

**John:** So I would say to this point I’m not aware of any vetting of screenwriters where like, oh, we would hire them but they’ve had some tweets about China that could be problematic. Could that happen? Yeah. That could theoretically happen. But that’s not happening yet.

**Craig:** Yeah.

**John:** But I would say China is worth its own discussion about the bigger issues because it’s a tremendous amount of money. It’s a tremendous amount of political leverage. And it’s a thing you touch very carefully as a writer.

**Craig:** Yeah. You know, I guess I’m kind of lucky in the sense that I’m not really committed to making movies or making television shows that are specifically critical of the Chinese government. It’s just not where one of my interests are.

**John:** Yeah. But if Chernobyl had happened in China that would be problematic.

**Craig:** Oh yeah. So there were movies that used to happen. Seven Years in Tibet. And was Red Square, was that about China?

**John:** Yeah, I think so. That was the one with–

**Craig:** Richard Gere?

**John:** Richard Gere, yeah. But the Red Dawn remake was originally China invading and then they changed it to North Korea or some undisclosed country.

**Craig:** Correct. Because that’s how that goes now. And, yeah, the foreign villain du jour has changed many, many times. There was a long stretch in the ‘70s, and ‘80s, and into the ‘90s where the villain was just some sort of generic Islamic terrorist. Russians used to be villains, then stopped being villains. And are back to being villains.

**John:** Back to villains. The third Arlo Finch book which comes out February 5th, a large part of it takes place in China. And I did have to be mindful of sort of like I was portraying China in it. So, the Chinese government has a role in it, but they’re not the bad guys in the story. I did have to think about what am I saying about China. And if you’re reading this as a Chinese reader what would you be taking from this.

**Craig:** Yeah. I mean, the world now is such that governments do coordinate positions online to impact culture. So, you know, Chernobyl sort of snuck up on the Russian government a little bit, both the event and the miniseries. So I didn’t get hit with a coordinated response. But there were some things. And little tiny things where you’d go, wow, just like people saying why are you talking about Ukraine like it’s really a country or place, it’s not. It’s really just Russia and they think that they’re Ukraine but they’re not. And I’m like–

**John:** Oh, OK.

**Craig:** OK. Mute. I’ll just mute that. I don’t want to get sucked into that whole thing. Similarly I will occasionally tweet in support of what we should be doing which is recognizing that the Armenian genocide occurred. And I’ll hear from Turks. And they say the same things. It’s out there.

**John:** Yeah. Our last question is from Rob. Do you want to read it?

**Craig:** Sure. Rob asks, “My agent tells me that no one spends on feature development. So the only solution is to spec. I have concepts in light treatment form, five pagers, but it seems crazy to invest months of work taking them further without clear interest. To me if there’s enough interest for me to write it that should be enough interest to pay and develop it.” Rob.

“I get why companies want this to be a way, but surely this can’t be the only way.” Would I have even a millionth of Rob’s confidence. How wonderful life would be.

**John:** Life would be great. Let’s talk through some terms here. Because I’ve heard about this from other writers at probably Rob’s level here. It sounds like Rob is someone who has not been produced but is someone who is getting read a lot, which is great. Rob, awesome. You have an agent now at one of the agencies who signed a deal maybe. That’s fantastic.

So you’re going and meeting with places. You’re kind of pitching ideas and you’re writing up on your own these sort of five-page little things. That’s great. But these places aren’t buying them from you, or they’re not going to pay you in advance to write this script because they kind of don’t have to. Because unless there was competition over one of these things they’re just not going to do it. And there isn’t just wait and see what the actual script looks like.

So you can say like, hey, the smart money would be to pay me to write this so that they can control it the whole time through. That’s not how they see the smart money because they have a limited development budget and they want to spend that on things that they really think are going to get made.

**Craig:** Yeah. I mean, there is development money, Rob. I mean, your agent is incorrect. They spend millions on feature development. But what John is saying is absolutely true. They spend it on stuff they know they want.

**John:** Yep.

**Craig:** So you are like a waiter coming up to somebody in a restaurant saying I know you ordered the this and the this. But would you consider the this that you’ve never heard of. I guess maybe. Could I taste it? Nope. [laughs] You just got to buy it. But trust me, because if I have enough interest to cook it you should have enough interest to pay me for it. So, they – look, they used to all the time because they had to make movies. They were starving for movies because of the way the video market worked. The more movies you made, the more money you made. So they needed people to come to them and say what if it was Die Hard in a dog house. And someone would go, great, money, go. Like a little bit the way Netflix works now.

They don’t do that anymore. Putting every movie out is a massively expensive proposition. I was reading about Cats which obviously has not done well at the box office and I think they said the production budget was $90 million. That’s a lot of money because they had to put CGI fur on people and whatever. The marketing budget was $110 million. That’s why they are so careful about what they make. That is why they try and only spend money on the stuff they think they already want.

So you’re coming in there with something new, then in all likelihood you are going to have to hand them not just a script, Rob. That’s not even enough. You’re going to have to give them a script with an actor and a director attached. Because that’s how you’re going to – I mean, I think of like the Dr. Dolittle movie that’s coming out. Stephen Gaghan wrote a script with Robert Downey, Jr. attached and Stephen Gaghan attached to direct. And that’s why there was a bidding war for that movie. Because it was sort of like we’ve done it all. Here it is. You can see it. It’s real. Yes or no?

So, when you say Rob if there’s enough interest for me to write it that should be enough interest to pay to develop it, all I can say is you’re interest has nothing to do with their interest.

**John:** No. When he’s describing this light treatment form, or this five-pager idea, that was never really a thing.

**Craig:** Correct.

**John:** Those haven’t sold.

**Craig:** Correct.

**John:** There never was a market for those.

**Craig:** Correct.

**John:** So I think that may be a very good way of expressing the movie for you and in some ways Rob it’s awesome that you’re thinking through the movie at that length and in that form rather than the whole 120 pages. Of those five pagers, pick the one that you actually want to write the most, that you would actually pay money to see, and write that as a spec.

**Craig:** Write it.

**John:** And then use the agency to help you get that in the hands of people who can actually buy that.

**Craig:** And if no one makes it they’ll hire you to write something else because they love it. If you really have to write something you write it. You know? You just have to. You do it. It’s when you’re writing it to, I don’t know, prove something or get a job or be paid money. Like I said before, you enter a weird relationship with the thing you’re writing where you’re now kind of like john and prostitute and you don’t want to be that. You want to be – not you, John.

**John:** It took me a while to get there, but I figured it out, yes.

**Craig:** The generic purveyor and solicitor. You want to be in love with it. You want to be in love with it. And then nothing will stop you from writing it. And then hopefully people will see that.

**John:** Yeah. You just said john and prostitute. Where do you think the john comes from?

**Craig:** In that usage?

**John:** Yeah.

**Craig:** I would assume just an anonymous guy.

**John:** Like John Doe, yeah.

**Craig:** Yeah.

**John:** I was Googling this past week for Parson Brown. In the Christmas song like we can dress him up like a snowman and pretend that he is Parson Brown. Parson Brown is actually just an old British term for a John Doe.

**Craig:** Oh, really?

**John:** Yeah. So it’s not a specific person. Parson Brown is just–

**Craig:** So you see a body, like who is that body? Some Parson Brown.

**John:** Yeah.

**Craig:** Wow.

**John:** Isn’t that crazy?

**Craig:** British people are fascinating.

**John:** They are.

**Craig:** They really are.

**John:** The strangest thing, those Brits.

**Craig:** Parson Brown.

**John:** Parson Brown.

**Craig:** There’s some filthy Parson Brown lying on the ground as I’m at my cottage. Dispense of him.

**John:** Nice. It’s time for our One Cool Things.

**Craig:** Great.

**John:** My One Cool Thing is an article by Timothy Lee for Ars Technica entitled I Created My Deepfake. It took two weeks and cost $552. And so this is a guy who decided to take footage of Mark Zuckerberg and footage of data from Star Trek: The Next Generation and swap faces with them. And wanted to see how feasible that was.

**Craig:** It’s a pretty good idea.

**John:** It’s a really good idea actually. And the end results are pretty good. They’re not fantastic. They’re not as good as like the Bill Hader ones that we’ve been seeing which are remarkably good.

**Craig:** Disturbing. Disturbing.

**John:** So, so good. But it’s a good walk through of the state of the art of the technology right now and sort of how it is done. It takes a lot longer than I would have guessed to do. It’s not a speedy process at all. With a lot of human–

**Craig:** It will be.

**John:** It will be. And that’s the thing. It reminds me very much of the early days of Photoshop. I remember Spy Magazine when they would put Sharon Stone’s face on a model’s body and it was like a sci-text machine. It was like $20,000 to do. And now it’s like any kid with Photoshop.

**Craig:** With a phone. No, it’s terrifying. And there’s going to be some way to kind of watermark things. We’re going to have to figure out how to verify things. Everything, by the way. Terrifying. Absolutely terrifying.

My One Cool Thing has the coolest name of all time.

**John:** Tell me.

**Craig:** It’s the Vertiflex Superion.

**John:** I like that very much. Now it sounds like it could exercise equipment, or some sort of new investment thing.

**Craig:** Or a supervillain.

**John:** Yes.

**Craig:** Vertiflex Superion has landed on the planet and is going to devour your soul. The Vertiflex Superion is a very small little piece of titanium and I had it stuck between my lumbar four and five vertebrae.

**John:** Very nice.

**Craig:** Because I had some disk degeneration. When you sit your spine is somewhat flexed and open. When you stand your spine will curve back a bit to maintain your center of gravity and where it curves back typically L4/L5 is where most of it is. And those vertebrae will tend to start to collapse down. And when they do when you stand they will smush down on one of the nerves that’s exiting your spinal cord, heading down through your lower back, your butt, your leg. And it’s painful.

I’ve been dealing with this for like two years. And the only – so there’s some steroid injections you try. And if those work, great. They did not for me. I mean, they worked great for like two weeks. And then there’s just surgery. And the surgery is a lot. They whack you open and they scrape all the muscle away from the bone. And they chop some bone away. And then they fuse the bones together. And then they stick – and it is a lot.

Or, you can do this thing. Very non-invasive. A little one-inch incision and they put a little tube through and this little piece in. And it opens up and it basically props open your vertebrae when you stand. Very simple idea. It works brilliantly. I have – I mean, it’s really reduced the pain by like 90%.

**John:** That’s fantastic.

**Craig:** Which is amazing. Now, here’s the frustrating part. The Vertiflex Superion and basically all things like it, they’re called spacers. Vertebral spacers. They are approved by the FDA. You will be reimbursed by Medicare if you’re on Medicare. The big insurance companies consider it investigational and will not pay for it. So, I paid out of pocket. It is not cheap. And I am annoyed. And so this is for you, AETNA. Or what are we, Anthem? We’re Anthem.

**John:** Anthem/Blue Cross Blue Shield.

**Craig:** AETNA is the same way. Anthem/Blue Cross, I would like to say to you, “You guys are nuts.” Because what you’re saying to people and what they said to me was, no, you may not have this done with us paying. Instead you can have something done that is far more expensive. Vastly more expensive. Like ten times more expensive. And more painful. And has a much higher rate of opioid use after. It makes no sense. So, please, Anthem/Blue Cross, based on this anecdotal story of one patient, but they also have terrific results and scientific studies to back them up. Reconsider. The Vertiflex Superion.

**John:** Now, Craig, it does sound to the casual listener like–

**Craig:** I’m being paid?

**John:** No. That you have now become the robot. Because you actually have metal pieces inserted into your body.

**Craig:** I have a piece of titanium in me. So, to be clear I am not being paid by the Vertiflex Superion corporation or its subsidiaries or whatever parent companies.

**John:** But you do own a piece of that corporation.

**Craig:** I do own a piece of that corporation inside of me. Although maybe I’m just licensing it. [laughs]

**John:** What if they actually implanted that, because it’s feeding directly into your spinal cord.

**Craig:** Correct.

**John:** So it could–

**Craig:** The Vertiflex does talk to me. It tells me things. It has told me to be less frustrated. It does occasionally tell me to murder. [laughs] But we’re working through that.

**John:** Yeah.

**Craig:** Yeah. That’s the one downside to it. Can take over your brain and make you murder people.

**John:** We’ll hope not though.

**Craig:** Yeah.

**John August:** Hello and welcome. My name is John August. And this is Episode 430 of Scriptnotes, a podcast about screenwriting and things that are interesting to screenwriters.

Craig is off an assignment. He is literally stuck in a writer’s room. But luckily we have the incomparable Aline Brosh McKenna here to pick up the slack. Welcome back, Aline.

**Aline Brosh McKenna:** Woo!

**John:** Woo! Aline!

**Aline:** Let’s dance.

**John:** Today on the program we’re talking about TV musicals, LA versus New York. Pitch decks. And a bonus segment on online stan culture.

**Aline:** Ooh.

**John:** Special guest Tim Federle will join us in a moment, but first we have follow up on assistant pay. So let’s welcome back Scriptnotes producer, Megana Rao, to get us caught up. Welcome back, Megana.

**Megana Rao:** Hi, thanks.

**John:** Hi. So, Megana, the big news this past week was that the results of this big assistant survey came out. There were more than 1,500 assistants, current Hollywood assistants who responded. What are some of the takeaways we got from this survey?

**Megana:** Yeah, so I think the results of the survey were pretty validating for most assistants. So we saw that 64% of respondents reported making $50,000 or less per year. And as we talked in the town hall you need a minimum of $53,600 to not be considered rent-burdened in LA.

**John:** And rent-burdened is, you know, the idea is that you shouldn’t be spending more than 30% of your take home pay on rent, right?

**Megana:** Correct. So this means that those folks are spending 30% at least on just housing costs in LA.

**John:** So let’s break down the after taxes weekly pay. So, after everything is subtracted what they’re getting in their bank accounts. So it looks like 14% of these assistants were making between $500 and $600. 19% were between $600 and $700. 22% were between $700 and $800. And 17% basically were between $800 and $900. So, all these levels are pretty challenging to make a living. That upper tier is probably the sweet spot where someone can actually sort of do the thing they need to do just to stay in Los Angeles.

**Megana:** Exactly. And I think something else that you see from this survey is that, you know, with the nature of Hollywood and the way you get work you’re not consistently working every week. So, that’s just for the weeks that you are able to find work.

**John:** Right. Now, Aline, you were a showrunner on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. So, it was probably your first time having staff and having assistants. Did these numbers surprise you at all?

**Aline:** No, in fact, my assistant Jeff Kasanoff is sitting here.

**John:** Hi Jeff.

**Aline:** And we were talking about this yesterday that none of this was surprising. So, what I didn’t realize and what I think we’re going to talk maybe a little bit about how people can help, but one thing is that when I first had assistants they were hired by the studio and I didn’t think to ask. You know, you sort of assume like they are a big, responsible studio. This is what they do. They’re probably doing it correctly. That’s dumb.

So, you have to ask and find out. It took me a little while to figure out like, hey, what are you making? How much overtime do you need? You know, to sort of be proactive about making sure that the assistant is being taken care of if you’re working for another employer. But, no, I’m not surprised. And particularly I know that the agencies are really challenging for people to work at. And it’s why they have a large percentage of people – assistants there are children of.

**John:** Now, Megana, some of the emails we got in were talking about, you know, I was pressured to pay for some things myself. And I wondered whether that was just anecdotal or if that was a systemic problem. Based on the survey it looks like 28% of assistants felt like they had to pay something for themselves out of pocket. So, between $100 and $200 out of pocket.

So we had the example of the guy who had to sort of make up the overages for the lunch orders. But other stuff that the assistant was basically just not reimbursed for. So, it looks like that’s a pretty systemic problem.

**Megana:** And that’s just for $100 to $200. But a lot of assistants are paying like a little bit each week that they, you know, don’t feel comfortable getting reimbursement for. Yeah.

**Aline:** I mean, that’s just – that’s horrifying.

**John:** Yeah.

**Aline:** So, again, just to skip ahead to some suggestions I’m going to make later, you know, one of the things is that you really have to work on the communication a lot upfront with an assistant so that they feel comfortable coming to you, especially because they may have worked in other environments that were scary, where they were not acknowledged for coming forward on things. So, when someone starts you can’t just say my door is open. Because just try and remember when you were 20 to 30, or 20 to 35, whatever. It’s intimidating. You can’t just say my door is open. You have to go and say, hey, I noticed you used your own credit card for these coffees. Did everybody pay you back?

You have to be proactive because there’s a big barrier that people have in those entry level jobs. They’re just afraid to say like, “Hey, I didn’t have enough on the P-card and so I bought the Thin Grams that everybody wants for the room. I bought them myself.” So that they feel comfortable coming to you and telling you that.

**Megana:** Especially because it seems like a lot of assistants in their past or maybe their friends have been dismissed for much smaller reasons than approaching a showrunner and asking these difficult questions about salary.

**John:** Aline, it strikes me as strange that you are a person who is running a show, you have so many responsibilities on your back. Are you the best person for that assistant to be coming to or should there be someone else on staff who is responsible for that kind of managerial function?

**Aline:** I mean, I think if you’re in charge you have to be in charge. I mean, you can encourage people to direct them to the person who might help them, but then you have to make sure that they got the help. You have to understand that like this is the most vulnerable class of folks and that it might be an intimidating environment for them and step forward and try and intervene. And that really is something that I learned over the course of the show which is that not just assistants by the way but young writers or PAs or anybody on the show really might not feel comfortable coming to you. And the idea of my door is open doesn’t quite do it, because it is intimidating to walk through that door.

So, just try and keep your eye on it, but not only that but to say really come and pull me aside and say, “Hey, this is a bummer for me. I’m having trouble with the studio getting reimbursed for this, or even getting my P-card.”

**John:** What is a P-card? I have no idea what you’re talking about.

**Aline:** Oh, it’s production. It’s the card that they give you so you can buy stuff.

**John:** So it would be like the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend production credit card?

**Aline:** Yes. But it takes a while to get it. And then going to pick it up and then what you’re doing in the meantime. And I wish that I had known more when I started, because it took me a little while. And the other thing I would say, this is true of all showrunning things, even if you are a very experienced, seasoned, come up the ranks TV writer which I was not, ask the people who do the job to tell you best practices. So, when I started with the writer’s room I went around and said tell me the best and worst practices from your previous shows. And we got so much information from that about how to run the room. And I would rely on them and the same thing I learned to do that with the assistants which is to say like what’s the best way to handle this? How would you like me to handle this? Who do you want me to talk to? What do you think is the best idea here? What would be the most helpful for you? Because they know way more about being an assistant than I do. I don’t know anything about being an assistant in 2019.

So, you ask the folks. If you’ve hired people you like, they’re well-meaning, hard-working folks, they will tell you how to do stuff. I asked Jeff how to do stuff, what’s the best way to do stuff all the time. Do you think we should do it this way? Should we do it this way? So they know. And they can let you know if you ask.

**Megana:** Can I also ask how much sort of freedom or leeway did you feel like you had with the studio to ask for these things?

**Aline:** So, you have some. You don’t have all. Like can’t reset everybody’s pay to what you want it to be. But you can ask the assistant like what’s the best setup for this for you so that you’re making what you need to make. And then also when we transitioned out of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and I had an assistant and I was hiring her myself we went over like what do you need, what do you need for this, what’s the best setup for this for you. So have some, but you’re under the pressure of budgets for everything on the show. And, again, communication is important.

The problem is as the study so aptly showed is that sometimes we just system-wide in the culture are not putting enough money in those budgets. I would really love to see a company step forward and say $53,000 is where we start our pay for assistants. If one company would do that that would really make an enormous difference for everybody to say like, hey, we’re committing to paying this wage across the board. That would be a huge, you know, huge step forward from a company standpoint.

Because if you work at an agency in particular where they really pay very little, as a boss I think there is a limit to how much you can do.

**John:** Megana, we got an email in about sort of what else bosses can do. And so do you want to read what Alex in the LA wrote for us?

**Megana:** Yeah, so Alex wrote in and said, “I’m an independent non-writing producer without an assistant but have nonetheless been listening with great interest to the recent discussions. One situation that I see way too often is producers and directors not inviting their assistants into creative meetings. They’re dangling at ‘apprentice for low-pay carrot’ but not letting them into the room where it happens. I realize this is the opposite of the writer’s room situation where assistants are being asked to do too much without compensation or credit.

“But producer, or director, or feature writer assistants will learn more from sitting in and listening to and hopefully contributing to one hour of a lively creative meeting than they will from reading a week’s worth of bad spec scripts.”

**John:** Yeah. I think this is a really important point that we haven’t talked enough about on the show is that you’re doing this job as an apprenticeship and you can only really be an apprentice if you’re there seeing the work happen. And a lot of the work of writers is those conversations, those meetings, those times in the room. That’s why Jeff is in the room here as we’re recording this is to see how the process works.

**Aline:** Well we are sort of effortlessly touching on all the things I put on my list, because my door is open was one. And then I wrote “fun stuff.” And, you know, I really think that some of the assistant stuff is just like, you know, we moved offices and Jeff has had to break down a lot of boxes. And like the boxes have to be broken down, but if you know that you’re doing something fun and you’re in exciting meetings with people – and also ask your assistant what they’re into. Because I’ve had assistants who are like – we had an assistant who wanted to be an actor. She’s now on Glow, Britney Young. She’s amazing.

But like ask people what they’re excited about. Some assistants want to be directors, so you can say, hey, come to this meeting with me. Or they want to be writers. Or they’re fans of John August. You know, find out what they’re excited about and give them that because that’s something to look forward to in a day which might have more menial tasks to it. So I think that’s something.

And then the other thing I would say is like we were sort of making a list of our core values at our little company, because I’m sort of transitioning into having a little company of my own. And one of the things I wrote down was like “we have fun.” You know, we try and do things that are fun. We were looking at some office space and then we stopped in Koreatown and we went to a store. And I bought Jeff a windbreaker. And we went to Gong Cha. You know, you’re so busy. Like yesterday we had back-to-back-to-back meetings. But just to find time to have a laugh.

And the other thing I think is important thing for bosses is like this is a pipeline to meet cool, young, fun people. I mean, this is an opportunity for that. One of the assistants from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is on High School Musical and working with Tim. And I’m going to a craft fair with one of my old assistants tomorrow. And I’m writing a series with another one of my assistants. Like what a great opportunity to get to know people.

And I think one thing Jeff and I talked about in the car on the way over is people want to be seen. Everybody wants to be seen. You spend so much downtime with your assistant in a car or sitting in an office. And where are you from? What are you about? Develop some nice private jokes. I mean, seeing it as an opportunity rather than an obligation would be a nice way.

The thing that I can’t speak to because I don’t – if you’re throwing things at people, then I have nothing – I can’t help you. Everything I just said you won’t have heard. And you need – no, I’m serious. Like, there is something really, really wrong with you. And you need to either do anger management or really delve into some therapy. I mean, that is – I can’t even – I know that that’s true not only from the survey but from anecdotally every assistant I know has a story like that. I just profoundly don’t know what to say about that except that that person is so deeply miserable and something is broken. And you need to go and get some help. Because whoever that is is just not going to be able to get all the wonderful benefits of having a smart young person in your office that you can have a nice interchange with if you’re that enraged.

I truly actually don’t even know what to say about that. Except that–

**John:** We’ll put a link in the show notes to the results of the survey, including that 104 respondents reported having an object thrown at them, which is not good.

**Aline:** Can we find an article which is like get help or like can we link to an anger management or a mental health or something?

**John:** We will.

**Aline:** Because these people are very distressed. Because what I’ve heard is throwing things, items of food, and pieces of computers, and cell phones. Obviously that person is distressed to the point of not really being capable of being in charge of anything, including themselves. I’m not even sure I want them in a car. One of the things that is really challenging that I’ve been aware of for many years is getting people into this pipeline is extremely challenging for a lot of reasons that are not that easy to see.

You know, one of them is people from other parts of the country, who are not from the sort of upscale college pipeline, don’t even know these jobs exist. You can’t interview for them remotely, which is a must. You have to have a car to do these jobs. They just assume, especially if you’re a writer’s PA they assume you have a car. So that’s going to lock a lot of people out of these jobs. And so I think there are some really basic broken things in terms of how we wick people into those first jobs to begin with. And I think the next phase once we ameliorate the really just sort of baseline human necessity for the people who are currently doing the job is to figure out like how are we finding people from different areas, getting them here, acclimating them, helping them find transportation, explaining to them how the system works?

Because right now it’s a very self-perpetuating in terms of the types of people who are here and who they know and who knows about the job. And you have to be on the Facebook group. But like, you know, what if you’re a college student in South Florida and you don’t know any of these people? Or just a high school graduate somewhere and you think I’d love to do this. You just have no – it would be like trying to apply to NASA. It’s such a closed system just to get in that door to begin with. And that’s one of the reasons that we don’t have the representation later in the business is because we’re just not getting those people into those entry level jobs. So I think there’s a lot to be done here just to ameliorate the salary and not having things thrown at their heads. But I think beyond that because I have tried to mentor – have mentored people into this process and they have a tremendous amount of challenges with like, you know, can’t fly to LA to interview, or can’t fly to New York to interview. So, basic things like that.

Assume. So many things about this assume you are a rich kid who went to one of these 50 institutions.

**John:** And, Megana, before you go let’s talk sort of next steps that are going to be happening probably mostly in the New Year. So, in the follow up on the town hall there’s a move towards smaller meetings where we talk about very specific issues. So things like assistants at agencies. Personal assistants. Assistants in the writer’s room. And try to break down best practices because while there are issues that are common to sort of all industry assistants, there are some very special things that are happening in certain parts of the industry that we need to really focus on.

And then, of course, hopefully reaching a number that is sort of what a person needs to make as take home pay as an assistant per week. Because I think if we can establish this baseline at least everyone understands if I’m moving to Los Angeles I need to be making this much money or else it’s just not a sustainable career. So those are things we’re going to be focusing in on at the start of the New Year.

**Megana:** Yeah. I think that’s great. And making sure that that number is flexible with rising costs. And also I think we’re going to do more intimate support groups as well as a bigger session, or a closed door session on mental health.

**John:** Great. Megana, thank you so much.

**John:** One more bit of follow up is that in Episode 427 Akiva Schaffer wrote in about the waste generated by screeners. This past week I realized for the first time the Academy – have you used the Academy screener app?

**Aline:** Yes.

**John:** So, the Academy actually set up an app that’s on Apple TV and other places where you log in and you can get screeners for most of the things. Anything you would have gotten by DVD you can now see on the app, which I think is good.

**Aline:** There are not as many on there. They’re not all on there. There’s a sort of percentage. I think we’re working on it. I think we’re going to get there. Eventually it will all be that. I’m so distressed by the amount of junk that I get in the mail. And one of the writers from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Audrey Wauchope, who is amazing was so distressed by the amount of stuff that we got from Amazon, plus she and her husband are in several guilds, so they got like six pink suitcases and six – I mean, I’m exaggerating. But I think between the two of them they got six of those.

And then Modern Love from Amazon, they also sent out a similarly sized thing. And because Audrey and her husband are in multiple unions they had a giant pile of suitcases. And she was so distressed that she put a call out and some other people picked up on it and they’re taking the suitcases, filling them with art supplies, and handing them out to public schools.

**John:** Great.

**Aline:** But, I mean, it would be maybe awesome for people to start instead of doing that maybe making donations or something. Because it’s like you pick up a headline and it says the earth is going to be uninhabitable in 40 years. And then the mail comes and it’s just filled with like I don’t need a glossy bound script for – please just send me a link. I will read. I promise you I will read the script online. It’s so distressing to me.

**John:** Yeah. So I just want to highlight the good thing. I think the Academy screener app is a good idea. Netflix sent through a thing which is basically a free couple months of Netflix, and everyone gets a card for that. Great. It’s like I don’t want a DVD of a Netflix show. The point of Netflix is that there are no DVDs. So, I just want to encourage more of that. So, carrots and sticks. Let’s reward with some carrots people who are doing things well.

**Aline:** Yeah. I mean, I will say the Mrs. Maisel pink suitcase is adorable. And I love that Audrey is putting it to better use. But it’s just–

**John:** Stop.

**Aline:** Oh, someone’s landfill is going to be filled with strange swag suitcases.

Tim’s career has taken him from Broadway to Hollywood and like many of his works his current project reflects that. He is the showrunner and executive producer of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which he created for Disney+. Welcome to the program, Tim Federle.

**Tim Federle:** Thank you. Long-time listener, first-time guest. I’m genuinely honored to be here.

**John:** And you are here because of Aline.

**Aline:** Yes! I like to be acknowledged.

**Tim:** It’s true.

**Aline:** So I heard Tim on the Writers Guild podcast. I had been loving the show. So I loved the show, so I was like who created this special wonderful, amazing show? I looked up. I saw your bio. I found the podcast. And then the beauty of John August, so I emailed John and I said, hey, maybe we could do a thing with Tim someday. A day later we were on emails. And four days later we’re sitting in John’s office. So thank you for doing that. I love an episode where I can geek out about somebody’s work.

**Tim:** Thank you.

**Aline:** But in addition to loving the show, one thing I really think is great that you can speak to is, you know, a lot of the folks who write movies and television followed a very similar trajectory to get here. And your journey is different and I think it would really inspire people to know that you can be in the business in some area and you meet a lot of performers who dream of being writers and they don’t really know how to make that transition. And I love the story of how you got to being in charge of this wonderful show I think is so inspiring.

**Tim:** Thank you so much.

**John:** Let’s talk about what the show actually is, because people may not have seen it yet. So it takes places in a universe where the High School Musical movie exists. The show is set at the high school where the High School Musical was filmed. So stop me when I get any—

**Tim:** No, this is great. It’s like a really gay Inception when you described it. I love it. I’m so down.

**John:** So there’s a meta quality to it in that the characters in the show have seen High School Musical and know that they are enacting some of the stereotypes from that show. And they are in the process of putting on at their high school a version of High School Musical. So, there’s many layers sort of happening there. On top of all that, it is structured a bit as a documentary, or it has that feel of where characters can speak to camera, but more in the Modern Family way than in The Office way. There’s not literally a crew.

**Tim:** Right. I kind of pitched it originally as Modern Family meets Glee was sort of the idea. A little bit Office elements. For two reasons. Because I was so inspired by Christopher Guest films growing up. Everything from Best in Show to, of course, Waiting for Guffman. And also because I think the original movies of High School Musical were shot in such a specific bright way that I wanted to just from a camera style perspective like right away announce this as something different.

**Aline:** It sounds more meta than it is. I mean, one thing you said on the podcast which I think is really true is the second you start watching it there’s nothing confusing. It’s not Inception. It isn’t dense. It’s very heart—

**Tim:** It’s a group of kids putting on a high school musical. And I think what makes it meta at least for season one is that the high school musical happens to be High School Musical shot at the school where they did High School Musical.

**Aline:** But I love that you have some of the kids don’t know anything about it.

**Tim:** Yeah.

**Aline:** Like one of the leads has to go watch it. I think that’s awesome. And it’s so real. It feels really real because the reason it doesn’t feel to me gimmickly meta is because young people live in this world where everything references other things.

**Tim:** Right.

**Aline:** I mean, I sometimes turn on TikTok and I just know that there’s private things happening that—

**Tim:** Totally.

**Aline:** And memes obviously. But this is kind of an effortless way to like refer to an existing piece of pop culture while creating something else that’s just as valid and wonderful and interesting but is in conversation with another piece.

Time: Yeah. I mean, I think I felt like – I’ve worked for Disney in a lot of ways over the years. I was the dancing catfish in Little Mermaid on Broadway. I was a Christina Aguilera backup dancer right out of high school at one of the Super Bowls that ABC produced. And so I’m like a Disney kid. I famously didn’t get cast in the Newsies film, but I did have a callback after an option audition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I’m 108 years old when I describe my life.

But when it comes to this kind of High School Musical thing it was how can we be self-referential. And what I was surprised by, because we often think of Disney as a bunch of suits, is actually them so embracing the irreverence of what I wanted to bring to it I think in launching this new service. And saying like we’re going to announce that we can have fun with our own brand. And that’s been refreshing as a creative person.

**Aline:** I agree. It’s a great flagship property for them because it shows we’re going to be fun, we’re going to be irreverent, but clean.

**Tim:** Right.

**John:** So before we get into your bio and background, talk us through—

**Tim:** Did I say Christina Aguilera too early on the podcast, John?

**John:** No, no.

**Tim:** I know it’s somewhere in your bullet points.

**John:** It’s never too early for Christina. But my question is how did this project come into your universe?

**Tim:** You know, about a year and a half ago Disney kind of sent an all-points-bulletin out to the agents in a world where we used to all have agents and they said we have this title, High School Musical, that Disney+ wants to reboot and we just don’t have an idea. We know it’s a great title. But we don’t want to do a sort of craven money grab where we just do like a fourth movie. And so I was one of probably 25 writers who went in and pitched a take. And the short version of it is I had just finished binging American Vandal on Netflix. And was so inspired by the sort of reality of that docu way in and that teen culture of today that I walked in and just sort of said it’s a documentary about a group of kids putting on a high school musical.

And they bought it. And that was a little bit built on the back of the fact that I had this Broadway background. And so I think they felt like I could bring something kind of legit to it as opposed to the theater shows that I love but that are the sort of larger than life Smashes that are a different kind of show.

**Aline:** One of the things that you share with American Vandal is I love in American Vandal how young those kids actually look. Because I have a 19-year-old and a 16-year-old son.

**John:** Oh wow.

**Aline:** And like what a 15, 14, 16-year-old looks like you forget. You know, and we’re just so conditioned to seeing these movies where it’s played by a 25-year-old and they just are different. So American Vandal I always loved how young they kids were and looked. And the same on your show. I really appreciate that.

**Tim:** Thank you. And we fought for that. That kind of idea that CW sort of has that great 30-year-old teenager thing locked down. And I love those shows, too. But I was like one way we can do this different is cast a 16-year-old who can really sing live. And we’re immediately going to say this is not your grandma’s High School Musical. And it’s been really exciting.

**Aline:** Tim, when I think of how many 13-year-old theater geeks are watching this show and like so inspired and freaking out, I can just picture them all on their iPads in their bedrooms in their frilly canopy beds, not that I had one. Maybe I had one. Just freaking out because they’re really seeing. And that experience of being – I actually think even if you played a sport in high school, just that feeling of the high school being in a group.

**Tim:** Well, and I think for the same reason I watched every episode of Friday Night Lights even though I don’t know anything about football. I hope people discover the show and go like, oh, there’s something here for me. Because it’s ultimately like Bad News Bears. That’s sort of what these stories are.

**John:** Underdog stories.

**Tim:** Underdog stories.

**John:** The ones putting it together. So you say you go into the room and you say that you had watched American Vandal. That you had a basic take on it. Can you describe a little bit more though what that first meeting is like and what did you go into that room with?

**Tim:** Process. [Cross talk] process. Absolutely. So it started with a phone call with a group of creative execs just saying, “We want to get to know you.” I had written a spec script about a guy who hits his head and sees the world as a musical, which there’s actually a show coming on the air that’s actually very similar to that, which is what it is. And it was one of those spec scripts I had written interesting he dark being like is anybody going to read this.

So tip number one, have a toolbox fool of spec scripts if you can.

**John:** But at this point you already had Ferdinand done?

**Tim:** Ferdinand was done.

**John:** You were already a writer who was hirable because you’d actually had something that had been produced.

**Aline:** Can we take a break to sing a song? Is anyone ever going to read this?

**Tim:** Yeah, totally. I mean, that is the age old – but yeah, Ferdinand had come out and done pretty well. And so I get this sort of phone call that says we’re the creative execs, we have a High School Musical sort of title, do you have any ideas? So the initial phone call is me just kicking the tires and trying to sort of “yes and” the conversation. Like OK, they’re sort of into the idea of a documentary. OK, they don’t love the idea of that, so let’s go this way.

And then what I usually do, my technique is I follow up with a really personalized email direct to the execs. I take the agents out of it, or the managers these days. And I’m like this is going to be a personal relationship anyway, so let me see how this goes. And I usually follow up with an email that’s just like headlines from what I think they liked. And that led to, “Great, let’s explore this further.”

And then the truth is I probably did a month of free work, where it was just like I kept sending ideas. And the after that became a three-pager. And then it became–

**Aline:** Before you got hired.

**Tim:** Yeah. And then it’s like there’s you and three other people who we’re interested in. And I’m a New Yorker. I lived in New York for 20 years. And it’s like we’re just going to do this over FaceTime with the head of Disney Channel. And I was like, OK, great. And I flew myself to LA. Because I knew that thing about being in the room opposite the person really matters. And I flew myself to LA and put myself up in a crappy Airbnb.

**Aline:** This is all before you got the job?

**Tim:** All before I got the job.

**Aline:** Wow.

**Tim:** And I walked in and I just sort of monologued at them. You know, one of the advantages of being a former performer is that you have a little bit of that improv thing in the room that helps people understand what the feel of the show is. And I remember taking a Lyft away from the studio and getting a call on the 405 that just said, “We’re going to hire you to do this.”

**John:** That’s great.

**Aline:** Wow.

**John:** So let’s talk about the free work you did. Because free work is a thing that is sort of bugaboo for me in that it’s awesome that you got that job, but a bunch of other people were probably going up for that same job and were also doing that free work. And so Disney+ and the makers got to see a bunch of written versions of things. And so you don’t know the degree to which your writing is being compared against other people’s writing or ideas cross-pollinate. And so one of the other five finalists for that thing is probably listening to this and being a little bit frustrated that they did the same work.

So, that’s a real thing.

**Tim:** Yeah. And I don’t – you know, what’s interesting and what I will say is, and this is probably protecting themselves, but I don’t think I was ever asked to do anything but like keep talking to us. And yet I as a writer feel the instinct to put words down. And I know that you don’t really sell something till they can read it. I didn’t write a script but I certainly put real thought into these are the characters, these are the journeys, these are the arcs.

So, a certain amount of free work – maybe it’s my background of auditioning for so many things that I didn’t get.

**John:** That’s what I was thinking, yeah.

**Tim:** That I’m just like, yeah, you put yourself out there and you get – I saw a tweet last week that made me laugh so hard that was like, “Writers don’t give up hope. I had 48 rejections before I got my 49th rejection.” And I was like, yeah, that is my life as a dancer. That I used to take the bus from Pittsburgh when I was 18 to New York. It would be ten hours. I’d get off the bus. I’d audition for the Radio City Show. I wouldn’t get a callback. And I’d go back to the bus station. So I’m sort of used to a certain amount of putting myself out there for no pay. But it’s tough.

**John:** Yeah. But you wouldn’t actually – but you wouldn’t perform on stage for no pay? Well, maybe you would.

**Tim:** My eyes are glazing over because I’m thinking of the number of benefits I’ve done. No, you’re right though. I wouldn’t. And only recently there was some project that I’ll have to remember what it was. Oh, yeah, I was talking to Warner Bros. about something and they had a really great system in place that they were like before you do these five pages we need to get a deal in place.

**John:** Great.

**Tim:** In case this happens.

**John:** That’s what we want.

**Aline:** An if/come kind of deal.

**John:** Good.

**Tim:** Exactly. Shout out to Clint Levine who is one of the best execs in the biz.

**John:** Nice. So you get the job. You’re on the 405. You’re in that Lyft headed home. I forgot if it was the 405 or a different freeway. I want to make sure we’re accurate here.

**Tim:** I’m a New Yorker. I just put my head down in the car.

**John:** So you are a New Yorker, so now you have to come to Los Angeles. And so what was the process from getting the yes, then did you write a script or did you immediately go to a room?

**Tim:** Oh no. It was a big process. And yet also a condensed process because they had this platform to launch. Right? So I think I sold it over the summer and it was green lit by, no, I sold it in January of 2018. Green lit by the summer. And the period in between was making a deal which was to say this is not an immediate green light, it’s not an immediate slam dunk. And so I went through a pretty traditional development process which just like your listeners know this already, but I’ll say it quickly. Which is here’s my ten-page outline for the pilot. Here’s their ten-page notes back. We finally settle on an idea we all like. I write it. They give notes again. I write it again. Notes again.

And I think I wrote three drafts of what the pilot would be. And then built into my deal, which a lot of times is these days, is the idea of create a bible for the series. So we should talk about this because I put great expense into this actually. Because my feeling as a showbiz guy is that very few people get into showbiz because they actually like to read. Like we get into showbiz because we like the experience of being moved. So my feeling about putting together a pitch deck was that it should feel like the show.

So I hired Rex Bonomelli, the book cover designer behind all of Stephen King’s books, who is just a dear friend from New York. And I was like I’m going to send you ten pages of like Microsoft Word text about my show. Make it look like something. And here are the visual references I want. And he whipped out this glorious bible. The punchline being I never had to turn the bible in because someone at Disney+ read the pilot and they were like we’re going to do this.

**Aline:** Wow.

**Tim:** So I paid him out of my own pocket, which is just something I’m used to doing now. And it’s now just this very beautiful document that will never be seen.

**John:** Well, so what you’re describing is sort of like a pitch deck. And so generally it’s the kind of thing you might do early in the process to sort of show what the world feels like. When I was doing Grease I put together boards to show like this is what the world feels like, this is what the universe feels like. I’ve done it for other projects, too. And for Aladdin it was so helpful because I point to things and we could talk about characters and say like this person here. And that’s the kind of work I feel like is so valuable because it’s getting them thinking not about the script they’re going to hire, but the actual project they’re going to make. Like what it’s going to look like, what it’s going to feel like down the road.

**Tim:** Totally. And I’m now interviewing DPs for season two. We’re doing a DP change. First season was great, but we’re doing a new DP. And when I can point to anything visual, even if it’s like watch this ten-second Modern Family clip with the camera work. I want to emulate this. That’s what our business is. And so it’s this odd thing where our words have to feel like something.

**John:** Aline, when you were doing Crazy Ex-Girlfriend you had a similar process where you had to go out and pitch to a bunch of places. This was your original idea, so it wasn’t you’re going to one place. But it was you and Rachel going into the room. What did you bring into the room as you were pitching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend?

**Aline:** We had just a verbal pitch. But in that case we also – they could watch Rachel’s videos and that gave them a sense of how the musical – I mean, our musical numbers very much resemble Rachel’s videos just with way more money behind them. So we had that.

So, I think that using them as a creator to communicate with people because in the pilot process or when you’re making stuff you don’t have the thing to show. Like when we started Crazy Ex-Girlfriend we had a shot pilot. So when we were staffing and hiring people it was like well this is it, guys, and something to look at.

But if you’re trying to get people to understand, in addition to the script, I think a pitch deck made by the filmmaker/the writer is very helpful. The reason that I suggested is we’re now in a universe which has really been making me giggly where I get all these pitch decks that are made by companies and producers and they’re the most typo-ridden documents. Like I saved one of them because on every single page there’s a hilarious typo. But I think people now understand that they work well for writers and filmmakers. And I actually just worked on a short film program and the woman who made this short film she made the most beautiful little look book/pitch deck thing. That’s one thing.

But when a company is trying to get you to do a project and they sort of get a bunch of Clip Art and write some crazy prose, it’s been making me so giggly. I think I’m going to start a file of just saving them. Because it’s the non-sequitur theater plus the typos. And I feel like – and the other thing is then you’re going to give it to a writer. They’re often given to me to be like, oh, this is what we’re thinking of for the show. And it’s like, well, now you’ve filled my eyeballs with things that have limited my ability to imagine this thing. And I would rather that somebody say, “We want to do a movie about deer in the forest.” Then I can build my own reference of images as opposed to getting sort of then they’ve clipped a bunch of pictures of Bambi and whatever. And had somebody who is not a writer try and jot something down.

We’re in a little bit of pitch deck fatigue right now because the technology is so available to people.

**John:** After this episode I will show you my Bambi pitch book.

**Tim:** I was going to say my deer in the forest.

**John:** No, literally. I will show you my–

**Aline:** Oh, hilarious.

**John:** No, I went in on Bambi.

**Aline:** Hilarious. But, look, again, I think if it’s part of your – as a filmmaker it’s part of how you’re communicating your vision. Totally fine with that. It’s just like Flotsam and Jetsam from the Internet translated through probably somebody who is like, “Oh dude, what am I supposed to do here? They asked me to do a thing.”

So, anyway, I think they’re really great for what you were doing. I was surprised that you didn’t take that and show it to your staff and your DP and stuff because it probably has—

**Tim:** That I did. And I showed it to the cast, too. I’m still stuck on the fact that I understudied Flotsam and Jetsam on Broadway in Little Mermaid. So it’s like for me this is a real wakeup call this morning. But I will also say just on the pitch deck it’s not quite this, but this idea of the way we sell ourselves these days. You know, everybody knows like the first thing that happens if you’re up for something is you’re Googled. Or, you know, my assistant, Chandler Turk, fantastic guy who per the earlier conversation by the way now writes social media posts for our show the way Ilana Wolpert did for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, now she’s on my staff. It’s just what you try to do.

But Chandler, of course, sets up my calendar so that right before I interview somebody or I have their bio and I try to get my head around them, but even for staff writers these days there’s so many improv actors who are going out as writers. And so even before someone walks in the room like think about what your YouTube results are. Because that is like the first impression of who you are and what you’re going to bring into the room.

**Aline:** That’s terrifying.

**Tim:** Half of the people who are interviewed for things these days have like a really specific like oh they did that open mic at Rockwell. Or they did blah-blah. And it’s a real sort of calling card, which can be a great thing.

**John:** Now, you’ve sold the show. You’ve written the pilot. You’ve gotten the green light. At what point do you hire a staff? At what point are you in a room working?

**Aline:** And you didn’t come up from rooms, so how did you–?

**Tim:** I did not.

**Aline:** How did you figure out how to best utilize–?

**John:** Like you’re like Aline, where you’re–

**Aline:** Well, I had been in many rooms, because I did TV in my 20s and then also I’ve been in so, so many roundtables that I ran.

**Tim:** Right. And so in a funny way coming out of animation with Ferdinand, that was its own kind of room environment. It is–

**Aline:** Collaborative, yes.

**Tim:** It’s totally collaborative and it’s the best training for like nothing is precious, because on an animated project you write like a thousand pages for two jokes. The short answer is it all happened fast. It was like summer 2018, I think. And they paired me with a showrunner, Oliver Goldstick, who is fantastic and came from the Pretty Little Liars world. And we began talking about the season. And we hired a staff of six people. And then fairly early into the process when we were in production I think it became clear. There were so many things Oliver wanted to do and so many projects that he was lined up for that I took over as showrunner in a way because I think when you come from a theater background you have so much experience with just rolling with stuff.

Like everything from the understudy is also sick, so you’re now going on for the understudy for the lead role. So much of showrunning is kind of making the show continue to run. And that’s how we did that.

And when it came to hiring the room I almost doubled the staff this year. Well, it’s a Scriptnotes exclusive that we actually have more episodes this year than we had in season one, which I haven’t told anyone. And so we hired more writers this season. But in season one it was reaching out to old friends and also staying open to people who came through the door who came from less traditional backgrounds.

**John:** Now, you have a plan for making this, but in terms of bringing on this cast, I read that you basically cast one guy who was like the 16-year-old, and sort of cast around him. Basically that became the template for how you were doing it.

**Tim:** Totally.

**John:** And then was there something equivalent of like a 29-hour or a workshop process where you could sort of put people together and sort of get the musical?

**Tim:** That was so Broadway musical of you, John August. A 29-hour reading is a thing we do over in New York.

**Aline:** It’s funny. I was thinking this is just a podcast of three people who have done musicals.

**Tim:** It’s true. And the answer is no. So, what we did was we cast Joshua Bassett. He was the first audition tape I saw. He was 17 at the time. He held the guitar, sang the song, nailed the scene. I was like we have him. We have the show. And I think by casting a “real teenager” it also helped me prove my point which was let’s pivot the casting around that. And then a month and a half later – now we didn’t do a 29-hour reading, but we did a table read for the studio and the network and everyone important. And I will say the thing I brought to it and pushed hard for was I come from the Broadway world, so it’s like every performance is a performance.

So, I had the assistants go out and they tracked down like every music stand in LA that they could. And we did it the way you present Broadway musicals where I had the cast sitting in front of the room instead of around a table hunched over with no energy. And every time they had a line they stood. And the pulled the mic stand up. And it was complicated, but it made it come alive. And the big idea of that big table read was I was in a not heated conversation but in a heated debate with Disney if we could really have people sing live in the show. And they, to their credit, were like we’ll give you the shot, but ultimately we need to lip sync everything just in case.

And Joshua Bassett who is himself a brilliant young songwriter and a true like whiz kid, I was like, Josh, bring your guitar to the reading. And he stood up and sang this song and I watched an entire room of executives melt because it’s that magic thing that only theater people can do.

**John:** Yeah, yeah.

**Aline:** And ultimately you do a mix, right?

**Tim:** We do a mix. Because it’s really hard.

**Aline:** It’s really hard. We went through that, too, ultimately. And I had the same thing. Because it bums me a lot when you go into like a very produced sound.

**Tim:** Totally.

**Aline:** But ultimately what we found our music producer, Adam, he was like I can make things that are not live sound live. And so ultimately like there were times where we did where we ear-wigged people and we picked it up. But from a standpoint it’s so challenging.

**Tim:** It’s so hard.

**Aline:** But you get very good at figuring out how to do your mixes, like in your final mixes you find a way to be like, guys, if a big violin swell comes in here it’s just going to take us right out, so we just need to really dry up this mix.

**Tim:** Totally.

**Aline:** One of the things that’s really interesting is some people are great at lip synching. And some people are not. And it actually has a lot to do with how they sing and where they sing from. And we had some actors who just the way they use their mouths really lends itself to lip synching. And some people where the way they generate their sound it doesn’t. And so we definitely had – in our mix we definitely had challenges with some people, even though it is in sync it doesn’t look like it’s in sync.

**Tim:** Right.

**Aline:** So I’m familiar with that challenge. But you can actually do a lot. I think one of the reasons it’s a bummer is that some people just are very comfortable when someone starts singing you go into like full—

**Tim:** Totally.

**Aline:** Chain-smoker production mode. And it’s like you can actually do a lot.

**Tim:** And I think actually modern audiences are much more forgiving of that in a way than I am. I think they’re like it’s a musical, sing.

**John:** Glee was clearly – you can’t watch your show without thinking about Glee, because it’s a high school musical. And Glee from its inception, the minute they started singing it’s full production value.

**Aline:** And that was their aesthetic.

**John:** That was their aesthetic.

**Tim:** And it’s glorious, by the way. Fantastic.

**Aline:** That was their aesthetic. But I think because your aesthetic because of the docuseries aspect of it, because the kids are that age, you needed to have a little more grit on it.

**Tim:** Yeah.

**John:** You moved to Los Angeles from New York. That’s a question we’ve been trying to answer on the podcast recently. Advice for people who are moving from New York to Los Angeles. So we’ve gotten a couple of people who have written in with very sort of beginner advice, but for you what was the process like? What were the biggest changes you saw and how did you manage the process of moving from New York to Los Angeles?

**Tim:** I have a good friend, Kevin Cahoon, who was just on Glow. He’s an actor. And he says LA is great when you have a job.

You know, I think as someone – I grew up in San Francisco, then we moved to Pittsburgh, and then New York for 20 years. In my dance career New York is home. But I was getting to a point where I was like prototypically ready for some sunshine. And I quite literally for two decades have had apartments that looked directly on brick walls. So for just like a straight up day-to-day standpoint I was ready to embrace that part of LA.

I’m also kind of extroverted loner. And so I get my energy from alone time, despite the fact that I have a performer spirit. And so a lot of people who struggle with LA struggle because they need that bodega, and fill in the blank if your city doesn’t have a bodega. They need to run into the guy who knows the girl who they met at the haircut. And I’m actually like super good checking out of the writer’s room and going home for the night.

And, in fact, one of the challenges for me is to keep my life up in addition to the show, because–

**Aline:** That’s the blessing for your staff. That is such a blessing for your staff. Because when you work for people who don’t want to go home, I mean, I worked in my early 20s for a guy who would be like, “Oh, I’m so excited for when we’re going to order pies at 2am.” And it was like, please.

**Tim:** No, I feel bad when I keep them past five, because I’m insane. Because also I’m like LA in the winter, it’s dark at 4:15.

But for pragmatic New York to LA stuff, I pretended I didn’t live here for the first six months. I had a boyfriend in New York, trying to make that work. Really challenging. I still have an apartment in New York. So I took Lyfts everywhere. Disney had a generous relocation package so I rented a place in Los Felix and felt OK about that. And it was really only after going back and forth to Salt Lake City where I shoot the show and then got picked up for a second season before the first one aired that I was like I think I kind of live in LA now.

And so now I’m trying to figure out what that actually means. Like buying a car was like a big boy thing for me to do, because I have never owned a car. And I’m about to turn 40. I’ve never owned a car. So I like bought a car. And, by the way, I bought a stick shift because I’m insane. I grew up driving a stick shift in high school, like driving myself to dance class in dad’s car. And so I bought a stick shift and I actually love it. But everyone thinks I’m out of my mind.

**Aline:** That’s great. I want to ask you a question because this is really the – having worked with so many talented performers who I knew, and I know nursed dreams of writing. So you’re dancing backup for Christina. You’re doing Flotsam and Jetsam. And at home, you’re going home and now are you writing or are you thinking I want to write?

**Tim:** I’m dating writers. It’s actually option C. So, I’m dating a novelist. Then I’m dating a guy who writes a soap opera. And then my very dear friend Cherie Steinkellner who wrote Cheers and is a screenwriter, she said to me, “Tim, stop. Be the writer you wish to date in the world.” And this was a decade ago. I was just about to turn 30. I got a job on the staff of Billy Elliot on Broadway where I trained the boys in the show. And I was so inspired by middle schoolers. I say this to a fellow middle grade novelist. I love, Arlo, by the way. It’s fantastic.

**John:** Thanks.

**Tim:** And I realized that middle schoolers are so fun because they get every joke but they’re not yet jaded. It’s a great age. And so in secret I wrote this novel called Better Nate than Ever that was about a kid who auditioned for a Broadway show. And my way of doing it was – I did not research anything about writing novels. Because I didn’t go to college. And I had in my head that if there were a bunch of rules about writing I would just–

**Aline:** Let’s stop for a second. I just want you to say that again. You didn’t go to college. You went to high school and you started dancing. So just to say to people you don’t need to go to college. You can pursue something else. So you just were like I’m going to go home at night and open up Microsoft Word and just see what happens?

**Tim:** Yep. And I was like I’m going to write a novel in a month. And so I wrote a chapter a day. Better Nate is 30 chapters. And all did, by the way, at the end of it is I would just send it off to Cherie, this friend. And she gave me the best writing advice I ever got which was keep going. It was like – I mean, we all have a different writing process, but my thing even in first drafts of scripts I’d outlined that have been approved by networks is like I have to over write and get to the end.

So I’m like, OK, I have a script. It may suck but I have a script. And that was what I did with Better Nate.

**Aline:** Totally.

**Tim:** And then my super quick screenwriting story is just that from Better Nate than Never Lin-Manuel Miranda who I barely know personally read the book and oddly and sweetly plugged it in the New York Times by the book section which got me a meeting at Fox Development where they were like can you come in and just do a week of dialogue punch up on Bobby Cannavale’s villain dialogue in Ferdinand. And a year later I went to the Oscars with Ferdinand because it was one of those things where when you’re a dancer you learn how to be OK in every room and be nice to people.

**John:** Yep.

**Tim:** And learn the assistants’ names and not be a jerk. And so a year later I had rewritten the movie with Rob Baird, now the president of Blue Sky Animation, and Brad Copeland who just wrote Spies in Disguise which is a fantastic Blue Sky film. And then from Ferdinand I got the meeting for High School Musical. And then I had also written a flop musical. I had co-written Tuck Everlasting on Broadway.

**John:** Oh, yeah, yeah.

**Tim:** Which was a fantastic experience. And Broadway is heartbreaking.

**John:** It is.

**Tim:** And, John, I have to tell you. You won’t remember this, but years ago I fan-girled you in the basement of the Big Fish theater on Broadway. I ran up to you and I was like, because this was right around my turn when I was trying to be a writer. And I was like, “Mr. August. Mr. August, sir.” And I ran up to you in the basement of Big Fish during previews and I was like, “I love this musical so much. I love your podcast so much.” I think you sent security after me because I was kicked out. No, it was like the greatest. And anyway it’s great to meet you, again, now upstairs.

**John:** That’s fantastic. Nice.

**Tim:** I loved Big Fish and I love Big Fish and Kate Baldwin is a dream.

**John:** Fantastic. Yeah. I get to go see it in Korea over Christmastime.

**Tim:** That’s the dream of writing a musical. Whatever happens with it, other people put it on.

**John:** That’s nice. It’s time for our One Cool Things.

**Tim:** Oh my gosh.

**John:** Are you ready for your One Cool Thing?

**Tim:** How quickly these things come and go. I am ready for my One Cool Thing.

**Aline:** I am. And I have to look at my phone, too.

**John:** So my One Cool Thing is an article on writing by Leigh Stein. So I’ll link to a NBC News post about it, but also her Medium post. So she’s an author, a novelist. She got stuck writing on her second book. She basically started doing all the writer community stuff and just became so obsessed with writer community stuff that she wasn’t actually writing her thing. So this article is about how she wrote he second book, Self Care, which was really about how she takes care of herself.

But her spreadsheets she made to track her progress kind of reminds me of what you were talking about in terms of like writing a chapter a day.

**Tim:** Right. Accountability.

**John:** Yes. Basically how to be accountable to yourself and how to get stuff done. And so I think for a lot of our listeners her process will resonate.

**Tim:** Great.

**Aline:** Well I took pictures this morning of the things I wanted to recommend. This is one of the pictures I took, guys.

**Tim:** Gorgeous.

**John:** Because we’re an audio podcast, I’ll say that is a blurry thing.

**Tim:** That’s my mom Face-Timing me on Thanksgiving.

**John:** That’s really what it is, yes.

**Tim:** That’s what that looks like.

**Aline:** So here’s what I’m going to recommend. How does my hair look today?

**Tim:** Spectacular.

**John:** Nice, yes.

**Aline:** So for those of us, the ladies who have somewhat wavy, somewhat curly, but actually frizzy hair. It might be from somewhat of a Hebraic background, my hair is a challenge. My favorite line in the Fleabag season is when she says, “It’s all about your hair. Hair is all that matters.” So I dye my hair because it’s gray. So your hair gets dry. LA is very dry. And I’ve stopped using shampoo and instead of using shampoo I use Cleansing Conditioner. And I have two brands to recommend. One is by R+Co and it’s called Cleansing Foam Conditioner. And that’s sort of like a moussey vibe if you feel comfortable with like a mousse vibe. Look at John, he’s really not.

And then the other one that I took the bad picture of is called Bella Spirit by Chaz Dean.

**Tim:** Bella Spirit is my new drag name.

**John:** That’s a great drag name.

**Aline:** It’s a little expensive, but it’s a huge bottle. And that one feels more like a regular conditioner conditioner. So you use the cleansing conditioner like you would a shampoo. You are washing your hair but you’re not stripping your hair. And then you can use a regular conditioner. My hair basically cannot hold enough conditioner. There’s not enough conditioner in the world to moisturize my hair. But it really minimizes frizz. So, pick it up.

**John:** You have no frizz happening at all.

**Tim:** It’s glorious.

**Aline:** What a delight. But it’s not masking my Judaism either.

**Tim:** When I was in high school I would read Movie Line and I would get in the bath and I’d put mayonnaise in my hair and a shower cap over it because I thought that was like–

**John:** That’s what you do.

**Tim:** It’s what a normal boy in Pittsburgh does. My One Cool Thing is a new picture book called A is for Audra that is an alphabet starring Broadway’s leading lady.

**John:** Oh come on.

**Aline:** So great.

**Tim:** So John Robert Allman. It just actually made, I thought it was like the super nichey funny idea. NPR just named it like a best book of the year. I’m so proud of him. He’s hilarious on Twitter. Johnny Allman on Twitter and the book is called A is for Audra. It’s an alphabet book starring divas and it’s a spectacular idea.

**John:** That is a great idea.

**Aline:** Somewhere there’s a boy with mayonnaise in his hair in a bathtub who is going to be really excited to get that for Christmas.

**John:** Well, see, Tim your hair is fantastic and I have no hair. So maybe the mayonnaise was – it works.

**Tim:** Listen, it’s not just for sandwiches.

**Aline:** I did that when I was a teenager. The problem is it smells after.

**Tim:** It smells awful. You’re a disaster.

**Aline:** Yeah.

**Tim:** Tim.

**John:** Talk to us about online stan culture.

**Tim:** I’ve never worked on a project that gets immediate stans, which are super fans, or stalker fans to the Eminem origin story. And what was interesting launching this High School Musical Series was kind of watching immediately as people begin shipping certain couples, voting against certain characters, creating fan art. And it’s both thrilling and really, genuinely it’s so exciting to make something that people get that excited about. And also for me I feel so super protective of my young cast. And I know that if I’m looking through Twitter mentions and I’m looking at what people are saying about the show they are, too.

And stan culture is fascinating because I was reading something recently, Michael Schulman in the New Yorker wrote about fan culture and how on one of the many Star Wars iterations in the last ten years I believe it was that franchise – they started listening so closely to the fans that they tried something new in the follow up and like the fans just totally rejected what they themselves had pitched.

**Aline:** Yeah. That’s a really interesting, because I hadn’t experienced that either, because in a movie it just comes out and then it comes out. And in TV you’re in a conversation with people. And one thing – there’s wonderful things about it obviously, and you love to see people are excited about the show. But when they’re giving you specific feedback a lot of what audiences want is resolution. And so a lot of times what they would be saying to us sort of through Twitter or other means was get these characters together. Make Rebecca happy. We want to see her happy.

And I’m like I know you think you want that, but you don’t. Because then your show is over.

**Tim:** It’s over.

**Aline:** So that’s an interesting, but it shows that your story is working that they’re rooting for the things that you want them to root for. But I agree, it’s very important to hear it. For me I can hear it and then go my own way because like Craig I have a high disagreeability index where I can hear a lot of opinions and be like, awesome, I’m doing my own thing.

I think it’s important to know yourself as a writer. Like Rachel was much less likely to read that sort of stuff, partly because some of it was about her personal stuff because she was in the show. But I am able to kind of hear how fans are responding and then kind of go my own way. So I think it’s important to sort of know thyself with respect to that. And if you’re somebody who like it’s going to bum you out, or it’s going to affect how you write the show—

**Tim:** For sure.

**Aline:** Best not to look at it. But it’s a really interesting conversation because people bring their own – as we all do – bring their own things to the show. And so they recognize themselves in certain characters and they start to get invested in certain things. And I think you have to sort of take things as information. We’re all a little older here and I think my stanning really consisted of like cutting pictures out of magazines.

**Tim:** Right.

**Aline:** And Scotch taping them to the wall.

**John:** Well a thing that’s different about when we grew up is that we might stan some things but we had no way to communicate that to the greater world. And so Tim I hear you saying that you feel protective of your young cast because these people are talking about these characters, but they’re also really talking about those actors and wanting to see those actors do things.

Sort of one of my stans is probably Brad and Claire from Gourmet Makes.

**Tim:** Amazing answer, John.

**John:** Because I love them separately and I, of course, you kind of want them together as a couple. But of course he’s married. They’re not supposed to be a couple. But I see them as characters sometimes. And I have to sort of check myself. No, that’s not cool, because they’re not actually characters. They’re actually human beings and you’re not allowed to do that.
But talk to me about sort of how–

**Aline:** That is the most adorable fan ship I have ever heard.

**Tim:** Precious.

**John:** Oh, a lot of people stan Brad and Claire.

**Tim:** But so few people go public with it, John. That’s why we’re [cross-talking].

**John:** You got to be open and honest about these things. Is part of the reason why you encounter this on your show, because your show – three episodes dropped and then it’s week to week?

**Tim:** We were actually one at a time. In the first week it was two episodes, but it was one at a time.

**John:** And so that I think also builds that stan culture. Because they’re excited to see what’s going to happen next.

**Tim:** Which I’m so happy about. You know, when I sold the show I thought it was going to be binge model and I was like, oh no, week to week. Well, now it’s my favorite thing because in this odd period where there’s so many writing jobs the truth is there’s so few things that linger because if you miss Stranger Things season four in the first week you feel like you’re out of the conversation. I want to ask you. I’m curious for you, John. Because one of the things I’ve also encountered, like with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, amazing because it’s this original idea with a fresh-faced star talking about mental health. That is a true original. And I so admire what you guys did with that.

John, you have so many original things and also are known for some like pretty famous adaptations of classic properties. And so what I dealt with with High School Musical was like, oh wow, it took people two or three episodes to go not only is it not a remake, it’s a celebration of the original. So the number one comment I see is a version of “I hate to admit this but I actually love the High School Musical.”

So I’m curious for you–

**John:** Oh, I had that on Charlie’s Angels for sure.

**Tim:** Well that’s what I was going to say. For you, John, like being so associated with of course your own idiosyncratic point of view but also these things that’s like, wow, only John August could have thought of that take on that, how closely did you pay attention to the sort of conversation around famous adaptations?

**John:** Not at all. So I would say that I would approach an adaptation thinking like what is it about this property that resonates with me. And that’s what I’m going to focus on. And so I’m not going to worry about what the conversation will be. But also partly because I am only really writing features. And so I know that it’s going to come out and it’s going to be the thing it’s going to be, but there’s not going to be an ongoing conversation about the thing.

**Aline:** Jeff and I were just talking the other day that people still want to talk to me about Devil Wears Prada about her boyfriend is the true villain.

**Tim:** I’m trying so hard not to fan girl you this morning by the way about Devil Wears Prada. Both of you. It’s pretty cool.

**Aline:** But people really want to talk to me that Nate is the villain, that narrative. And no matter how many times I say that’s not how I see it, like I gave a whole long interview where I talked about, no, no, she’s being tempted by the devil and Nate is correctly saying you may not want to be closely identified with the devil. But no matter how many times. And I gave that interview and then the next thing there was an article which was like Devil Wears Prada screenwriter agrees that Nate is the worst.

**Tim:** And by the way that’s also part of stan culture. Like literally part of stan culture is something goes so far into the psyche as your film did that you need the inevitable backlash article. That’s a hit.

I remember years ago, only slightly off topic, which is you created DC right?

**John:** Yeah.

**Tim:** And I remember listening to this podcast years ago–

**John:** That is a deep cut, because no one saw DC. I haven’t seen most of DC.

**Tim:** All I’m saying is I remember being haunted because truly when I say I listen closely to this podcast, you and Craig once interviewed, I forget his name, but he was this brilliant now psychotherapist who was once a screenwriter.

**Aline:** Palumbo?

**John:** Yes. Dennis Palumbo.

**Tim:** Yes. Who has this line that I say every time I’m giving a writer a pep talk which is that like what screenwriters need is a high tolerance for despair. Anyway, I can quote your podcast back to you. But you said something that has haunted me for years which was like the most unrestful period of your life was doing TV because you walked around constantly thinking, oh crap, like anything could be good material for my show. And I’m always thinking of story.

And I thought of that last night at 3am as I was blinking at the ceiling. Because we just got notes back on the first three outlines of season two. And the notes are great, by the way, and genuinely helpful. But all I know how to do–

**Aline:** Can I give you a tip?

**Tim:** Yeah.

**Aline:** Don’t watch a cut before bed. Ever. And try not to read material in the three hours before you go to sleep.

**Tim:** Yeah.

**Aline:** Because the first season I would watch a cut at 10:30 at night, but my editor wasn’t there to talk to, and I couldn’t be like, wait, do we have this, do we have that, do we have this? And the whole night I would just dream about the cut and dream about footage I wish we had and so try to give yourself at least three hours before you go to bed where you’re not thinking about the show.

Because I think it’s really important what you said which is like you have to have a life. You have to, you know, get a dog. You know, have to go shopping with your friends. You’ve got to do other stuff or you stop feeding your – and one of the reasons that you get to be the person who is so burnt out, you’re not doing anyone any favors by getting burnt out.

It sounds like you already know that.

**Tim:** It’s so true.

**Aline:** Because as a dancer you’re probably used to taking care of your instrument.

**Tim:** Yeah.

**Aline:** Yeah.

**John:** Nice. Tim, thanks.

Scriptnotes, Ep 413: Ready to Write

**John August:** Hello and welcome. My name is John August.

**Craig Mazin:** My name is Craig Mazin.

**John:** And this is Episode 413 of Scriptnotes, a podcast about screenwriting and things that are interesting to screenwriters.

Today on the podcast we’re going to try to answer the question how do you know when you’re ready to write that script. Then we’re going to answer listener questions about rewrites and polishes and whether writing a bad script could put you on a do not hire list.

**Craig:** Do not hire.

**John:** Do not hire!

**Craig:** Do not!

**John:** But Craig, most crucially in follow up, a question a lot of people have been asking – Craig, what’s up? Are you OK?

**Craig:** I’m OK. So the last podcast was the one that you did with – and I was supposed to be there but I couldn’t, essentially connected to this same thing – you did the mental health podcast which we’ll get to in a bit. But prior to that I had to drop out of the race, the Vice Presidential race, the sexiest of all political races, vice president, because of a medical issue in my family.

So, a little context. First of all, no one is dying. I think that’s important for people to know. But I do have a kid who has multiple chronic health issues and there was – I think maybe, ugh, I want to say literally the day after I said, OK, I’ll go ahead and run for vice president we got a call that he had to go into emergency surgery for the second time in a year. And it’s a complicated surgery. It’s not the kind where they poke three holes in you. It’s more like the kind where they make a big line and go Wee. So, good news is he’s recuperating quite nicely, but he does have medical issues that we have to be attentive to. And it seemed to me not only that I was not going to be able to have the time or attention to give to the race, but even worse my ability to serve effectively for two years should I win was fairly compromised because, you know, if this happens again, or if one of his other conditions sort of acts up and that requires attention, then I just won’t be present or able to do the gig.

So, for that reason I had to drop out. But, you know, good news – to be clear – no one is dying. But, you know, it hasn’t been a great month.

**John:** Yeah. Life is challenging at times. And you and I both had some challenges as things happen. So, we’re glad to hear that he’s doing better and that you’re doing OK.

**Craig:** Yes. Yes I am. And I really appreciate. There was a wonderful outpouring of support and people were very lovely, which was nice to see. And we should. We should try and be lovely to each there is a medical crisis going on in a family, but nonetheless it was nice to see and encouraging that, you know, we all know ultimately what matters in life. There’s layers of importance and rankings of importance. And this is one of those things that’s more important.

So, we’re in a pretty decent place, but I think it was the right call to make.

**John:** I agree. Now, you also had a very bright moment of news over these last two weeks. You won a TCA, a Television Critics Association award for Chernobyl.

**Craig:** I won. I keep wanting to give it a name, like the Taco or something like that. The Taca? And I wasn’t able to go to the event and here’s why: because I had to then go to – I’ve been doing a lot of back and forth traveling – my son is at school in Utah, so we were going back and forth over the last few weeks from here to Salt Lake City. And then we had to go from here to Upstate New York to get my daughter from camp. She goes to a performing arts camp. And part of that final weekend when you collect your kid is that’s the big show. And if there’s one thing that movies have taught us, John, is that not seeing your kid in a production makes you a bad parent.

**John:** Oh absolutely. I mean, if there’s a third act lesson there, actually it’s often a first act indication that this is a terrible parent. But then by showing up at the third act moment you’ve redeemed yourself as a parent. So in the magical father wish comedy that is our life you showed up.

**Craig:** Right. I mean, the problem was I knew that there wasn’t going to be a show soon after that one, so I could have just first-acted that one and then arrived for the next one. Like, look, daddy gets it. But, no, I chose to do the right thing and go to see my child perform and it was great. So Jared Harris was able to accept on our behalf.

**John:** Oh nice.

**Craig:** And so it was great. I mean, I’ve never won an award before, I mean, in Hollywood. I’ve won things like in grade school.

**John:** Yeah.

**Craig:** Won some Mathlete challenges and such. But, no, it’s lovely. It’s a nice crystal slab and I’m very appreciative. So thank you Television Critics Association. That was super nice. And, you know, either I’m getting killed by critics or they’re giving me lovely crystal slabs. I’m confused. But it was great and very honored to receive something like that. And, you know, hooray.

**John:** Hooray. One of the things you did miss out on was this mental health and addiction panel. So that was last week’s episode we aired it. It really was just a terrific night and I’m so happy that people who have been writing in – it seems like it was meaningful for them as well. So, we talked about what it’s like to write characters with mental health problems or addiction issues, but also what writers should look for in their own lives when it comes to those two topics.

People wrote in with some really great personal stories, which we won’t share here, but it was clear that it touched a nerve for a lot of people. So if you haven’t listened to the episode yet I would recommend you go back and listen to that. Also listen to Episode 99. We will keep talking about these things in the future seasons of Scriptnotes because it’s not a problem that gets solved once.

**Craig:** It’s not. And it’s also not something that shouldn’t be talked about. We just naturally avoid it as people and we shouldn’t. We should be leaning into it. We should not feel any sense of shame. I feel no shame about my emotional issues and my mental difficulties and the medicine I take. And we do need to talk about it because our business, and particularly for writers I think the process of doing what we do as writers and then as writers for screen in particular is emotionally difficult and at times it can be extremely stressful.

And it is no surprise that a lot of writers end up with substance abuse problems. A lot of writers end up deeply depressed. A lot of writers end up with a kind of chronic anxiety that they find difficult to manage. And these are the things we want to avoid desperately, right. You can’t avoid them necessarily, but at least you can manage them and we can help each other by talking about them.

**John:** Yeah. The screenwriter classically is stressed out and isolated which is not a great combination for mental health.

**Craig:** No.

**John:** And so we need to look at ourselves and as an industry how do we do better for everyone who is facing those situations.

**Craig:** Precisely. And so, yes, we should keep talking about this and – and – John, I have an idea.

**John:** Please.

**Craig:** You know so we do nice things for charities. Maybe there’s something we could do for a charity that is involved in this area.

**John:** That would be great. So, a charity that is focused on mental health. If there is a charity that is focused on writer mental health, even better. But we will find ways to do some sort of event that could be benefiting this. I will also say Hollywood Health and Society who organized this event, they’re great. They do a bunch of stuff. And so I hope this is the first of many of these kind of panels we do on different topics.

**Craig:** Yes. And I do hope that I’ll be able to be at the next one. I mean, weirdly enough part of why I wasn’t there was because of these chronic issues, one of which is a mental health issue. So it’s something that’s part of my family and it’s something that we deal with. And we are those people that aren’t embarrassed to talk about it.

**John:** Absolutely.

**Craig:** I guess that makes us special.

**John:** Aw. Another very special institution in Hollywood is Deadline. Deadline is the website that we all feel a little bit of shame every time we open because we know it’s bad for us and yet still sometimes we open it up.

**Craig:** I mean, sometimes it’s fine. You know, it’s not all bad. Although I still have like Nikki Finke like PTSD. Because it used to be like just her going bananas. And now, well, now they do things like what they just did to you.

**John:** So, we have complained on previous episodes where they’ll take stuff out of our transcripts and call it an exclusive. Like, oh wow, it’s an exclusive of a podcast that we just recorded and put out for free in the world. I put up a blog post this past week about the myth that the WGA is not negotiating. It was a 1,088 word post that really talked through pretty clearly my thoughts. Deadline thought it did a good job as well and so they took the entire post and wrapped it around in some double quotes at times with like, “August said.” Basically excerpting the whole thing but kind of making it seem like an article.

**Craig:** I mean, you can’t really excerpt it if you take all of it.

**John:** No. So I bitched on Twitter about that and I wrote to the writer, David Robb, saying I don’t think that was appropriate at all. I didn’t say copyright infringement, even though it’s clearly labeled as copyright. Because there’s such a thing as fair use and I want to make sure that fair use is protected and it’s such a crucial institution for dissemination of ideas and culture, especially in a journalistic context.

But to take an entire blog post written by another person and just put it on your site is not really journalism. And as a journalism major back in college if I had done this for a news story–

**Craig:** Oh good lord.

**John:** My professor would not have given me credit for that. It would have been a lecture.

**Craig:** They’re screwing with you now. I really feel like they’re kind of doing it on purpose. I actually had a conversation about this with Nellie Andreeva who works at Deadline. I was talking with her at one of these HBO media events. And she admitted that exclusive was not appropriate. And she said they actually had removed that when they saw it.

But I think that you’re making a really good point about the nature of reproduction. So fair use does say, listen, if there’s newsworthy value to it you can take some of it – some of it. Not all of it. Right? So if you’re taking all of it then I think you would need to do, for instance, so the New York Times or the Washington Post if they’re going to republish say a court document, which is not copyrighted by the way, they still put it kind of in its own little box. And they say, look, here’s the document. We’re not just going to quote the whole damn thing as if we dug it up ourselves and made editorial choices about what to include and what to not include.

I just think it is a violation of some basic principles of journalism and they shouldn’t do it. Also, how about this? Just put the link on there, quote a few things like a normal person would, and put the link on and say if you want to read the whole thing to.

**John:** Like Variety did. That’s what Variety did.

**Craig:** Yes. Like a normal – correct, because that’s normal.

**John:** They made a little summary and they linked out to the article. And so that’s kind of the minimum you could ask them to do. But here’s my probably bigger frustration is that the headline for it is something like John August Sees Long Slog Ahead for Agency Deal Negotiations. And “long slog” was in quotes. And I’m like I really don’t think I said that. So I took a look at my original post, I took a look at the actual post that they had put, and they added the word long and put it inside quotes as if I’d said long slog.

So when I complained specifically about that they took long outside of the quotes, so it was clearly just editorializing that it was going to be long.

**Craig:** Yeah. That’s not right either.

**John:** That’s so wrong.

**Craig:** If you don’t call something a long slog they can’t quote you as saying long slog, nor can they describe it as a long “slog.”

**John:** Because you and I have both been through short slogs. That is a real thing where like, god, you’re grinding and you’re grinding and you’re grinding. It doesn’t mean it takes weeks. It means it’s just a really arduous process.

**Craig:** It’s tough. You can go through a slog of a negotiation for a project that they want to hire you for at a studio and it can be two miserable weeks of slogging. Where it’s back and forth and back and forth and back and forth and back and forth. A long slog that’s months. That has a specific meaning. That’s not – I think they have failed twice in this regard.

**John:** So, and my frustration with this is that I got people who read – I tweeted out my link to my actual article on my blog and I got feedback from that. And then I got a whole different set of feedback for people who had seen the Deadline piece, not realizing there was a blog post, not realizing I had not said “long slog.” And I could tell they’d read the Deadline piece because it’s like you say it’s going to be a “long slog.” And I’m like, no I didn’t. I didn’t say that. Deadline did. And that’s the frustration, the degree to which it warps the conversation we’re trying to have.

**Craig:** Well, speaking of conversation, let’s have a conversation about what you wrote and your point of view, because I had a little bit of a different point of view on it, as I thought expressed by one of the great GIFs of all time. I thought I picked a great GIF.

**John:** I don’t know the source of that GIF. What is the source of that GIF?

**Craig:** I have no idea either. Nor can I even remember what words I typed into the search to get it. But it was so perfect because it was like – it wasn’t like bad it was just more like, hmm, I don’t know. It actually perfectly encapsulated my response. So, I wanted to kind of walk through it.

**John:** And I should say that my response GIF was Joey giving Chandler a hug from Friends.

**Craig:** So adorable. Nothing can keep us apart. I think it’s really important people understand this. Nothing.

**John:** Nothing.

**Craig:** Although that one person on Deadline does want you to fire me. Oh no, they were on Twitter. Sorry. They wanted you to fire me.

**John:** I don’t think you can really be fired Craig. I just don’t think it’s going to happen.

**Craig:** You can’t fire me. I quit!

**John:** I’m going to stop paying you, Craig!

**Craig:** Oh man. [laughs] So let’s talk through. So do you want to sort of encapsulate your position, or you want me to ask some questions basically?

**John:** Absolutely. Let me give the very short version. We’ll put a link to the actual blog post, not the Deadline post here. I started by saying that I think it’s incredibly important that we have robust discussion of ideas and issues but as a union it’s important to have a common set of facts. And I didn’t feel like we were having a common set of facts on this idea of no negotiation. And that this idea that we weren’t negotiating had become something of a straw man, where it was just presumed at the start and then you could argue against this idea. You know, the WGA says we shouldn’t negotiate. Well, we should negotiate. And so I cited three candidates who are saying we are refusing to negotiate and then I walked through what was actually said at the time that we said we were no longer going to be negotiating directly with the ATA but negotiating with individual agencies, and what had changed in the meantime. What actually happened in the meantime.

**Craig:** Right.

**John:** So that’s a very short summary of what I wrote.

**Craig:** Yeah. And your suggestion is essentially that the argument of the WGA refusing to negotiate is a bit of a straw man. And it is and it isn’t. So there is imprecise language there, no question. I guess we want to – my point of view is let’s talk about what is sort of the significant core of this complaint, even if the language is imprecise that the WGA refuses to negotiate.

The complaint is that the WGA refuses to negotiate in any effective way with the big four agencies that essentially, A, control the ATA, and B, represent the great majority of our membership. I don’t think there’s much of an argument there, is there?

**John:** I think there is an argument there. Here’s what I think is fair to say. That the WGA has said that instead of negotiating with the ATA that we wanted to negotiate with the agencies individually. Specifically in Goodman’s point he says, “The top nine agencies,” so the big four and the next five agencies. We want to focus on them. And so have individual discussions with those agencies.

So it is fair to say that we are choosing not to negotiate with the ATA, refusing – not negotiate with the ATA. And to the degree that you’re not negotiating with the big four because they are only agreeing to negotiate through the ATA. That’s not as well established. But it seems like their preference is to negotiate through the ATA.

**Craig:** Well, that’s where I’m not sure I agree on that. Part of the issue is you can say, listen, we don’t want to negotiate with the ATA anymore. We just want to negotiate with the individual agencies and that includes CAA and WME and UTA and ICM. But the problem is that when David Goodman makes that statement he is well aware – I think we’re all well aware – that because of the nature of the proceedings prior to that moment which is kind of nothing happening, they make a proposal, we do not respond in any way to that proposal. Then they come back. They unilaterally raise their proposal. And we say after some time we’re not negotiating with you anymore. That that was in effect a secession of negotiations. And that it was incredibly improbable that without some sort of significant change in something that the individual agencies would not then take David Goodman up on this invitation.

**John:** Can you wind back that last sentence? So you’re saying that it was improbable that any agency would agree to individually negotiate?

**Craig:** I’m talking about the big four.

**John:** OK.

**Craig:** And the reason I keep talking about the big four is while we have signed some other agencies, I think it’s important to say that – unless I’m wrong about this – I don’t think we’ve signed any agencies that actually were engaging in packaging fees and affiliate production in any significant manner. Meaning we haven’t done anything to change anything yet. In fact, after about a half a year what we’ve done is essentially bring back a few agencies to the state that they were in prior to the action we took. I don’t really think we’ve changed much there.

**John:** I don’t think that is accurate or fair in terms of the agencies that we’ve signed and also just the packaging deals that have not happened as a result of this action.

**Craig:** So they were packaging?

**John:** Some of these smaller agencies were packaging. Verve was packaging. As I believe Kaplan-Stahler had a package on a significant property as well. So these are agencies who I think given their druthers would love to continue packaging.

**Craig:** Sure.

**John:** They’ve decided to not package in order to sign this deal.

**Craig:** I will acknowledge that. But I think in turn you would probably agree that none of those agencies were packaging in any significant way, or at least in terms of the percentage of shows that are packaged. They were responsible for maybe a cumulative total of 1%.

**John:** A much smaller percent than the big four. Absolutely. No argument there.

**Craig:** And so when we began this fight – look, when Chris Keyser came on our show and the three of us were in violent agreement that we needed to do something about packaging fees and affiliate production, the three of us were talking about four agencies effectively, because those four agencies account for the greatest majority, I mean, a vast majority of all of the packaging fees and packages that are implemented and all of the affiliate production that is implemented.

So, yes, we can absolutely say we have signed Kaplan-Stahler. Or Verve. But I don’t think we can say that we have effectively engaged in negotiations with the four agencies that are responsible for the problem that we are all really angry about. I think sometimes people think like maybe I’m on the agencies’ side because I criticize the way we’re handling things, but I’m actually – it’s because I hate the stuff that the agencies are doing that I criticize the guild because I want the guild to do better.

And now we have a difference of opinion of how to accomplish that, but I think I would push back on you in the sense of, listen, yes, there was some sloppy language there, but there is a decent point to be made that because of the way we have handled things we have yet to negotiate effectively, nor have we shown a great willingness through behavior to negotiate effectively with those individual four agencies.

**John:** I would say that folks who attend the WGA public meetings will get a sense of sort of where the strategy is currently and where it’s headed to. And that the big four – negotiating with the big four agencies remains a priority.

**Craig:** Well that’s good to hear. I mean, because I’ve been pretty consistent about this all along. That is where our victory is. Some people I think – I’ve seen some things where some members of our union seem to feel that we’d be better off without them and I will just continue to maintain that down that path lies peril for us. It’s not that we’re being deprived of their wondrousness. It’s that we may be subject to some anti-wondrousness. I mean, just this week I got a call about something and I was like, ugh, and it involved an agency – not CAA – which was my agency. One of the other big four agencies. That lit me on fire. I mean, I was so angry. I was just like pouring gasoline into bottles and shoving rags and I was ready man.

And then I’m like, OK, let’s just figure out how to deal with this and stop this. But it is infuriating. Some of the behavior that they engage in is infuriating. And I want to win. And the way I at least think about winning is that we figure out how to get them back from what they’re doing into a place where they’re actually advocating for us as clients.

So, I think you brought up good points. I thought that some of the people pushing back on you brought up good points. I think that as long as we keep our eye on this – what you’re saying is a priority – I don’t know how we get to this priority because there’s a lot of now anger between these parties and a lot of mistrust. But whatever can happen, hopefully it happens sooner rather than later.

**John:** All right. So let’s take a meta moment here to look back at the discussion we just had. And so you and I did not convince each other of anything, but we expressed our ideas and our opinions on sort of where things have been, where they’re going, and what the best course of action is. The degree to which we can model that behavior for other folks I think would be terrific. One of the functions I sort of see myself as a person who is not running for reelection is to remind people both in big rooms and online that we are remarkably lucky. That we are remarkably lucky that we are some of the most talented writers out there. We’re some of the most highly-paid writers out there. We’re the only writers in the world who get to have a union that gets to represent them this way.

So, we are starting from a position of just tremendous luck and luxury. And the fact that we have so many people who care so passionately about what the future is for all of us writers is great. And so let’s all approach this from a perspective of we may disagree on ideas and tactics and strategies, but the degree to which we can compassionately disagree and not question people’s motives but question people’s ideas, that’s how we come out of this in strength.

**Craig:** 100%. We should be able to stress test each other’s ideas on these things. And we should be able to do it publicly. I don’t think that asking why we are doing this or that in some way is going to damage our solidarity. Our solidarity at least to me is not a function of our allegiance to any given leadership. Because if it were our solidarity would have to kind of whipsaw back and forth depending on who just got elected.

Our solidarity is based on our willingness as members, even when we disagree, to follow our working rules and send in our dues. And what that means is when there’s an action like this one and we have a working rule that says you can’t go back to your agent until this is solved, you don’t go back to your agent. That’s where solidarity is. It’s not in agreeing with every single thing either Phyllis Nagy or David Goodman says. That would be – down that path essentially is just sort of a, I don’t know, a kind of a poverty of imagination and thought.

**John:** Yeah.

**Craig:** And I do think you’ve put your finger on it that as we go through these things to the extent that we can avoid deciding that some people are just bad because they think a certain thing about a strategy we should – it’s a shame. Because I do feel like every single person that is running in this race, every single one of them, legitimately wants to do something that they believe is best for writers. Nobody is getting a payoff or a kickback or anything. I mean, there’s been some crazy allegations made. So, yeah, let’s just reduce the temperature a bit. And I think maybe give ourselves credit for being strong enough to withstand an election which we’re supposed to have anyway.

**John:** Yep. And honestly I would rather have some disharmony than apathy. And so many years we’ve had apathy where we’ve had to basically twist people’s arms just to get enough people to actually run for the board or to run for office. So, it’s a good problem to have that we have many people who want to do this unpaid job for two years.

**Craig:** I completely agree. And one of the downsides to the – you know, we never really had uncontested elections and then suddenly we did just because we couldn’t find people to run. And one of the downsides is you start to create a generation of members who are not used to contested elections. And we can be frightened by them, even. And we don’t want that for the very reason you’re saying. We want a good competition of ideas and as long as our members are following our working rules and going by the kind of action that we’re taking then we do have meaningful solidarity. We don’t need solidarity of opinion. We need solidarity of behavior. And that’s important. And I don’t think that we should ever put something like an election in the context of hurting our leverage or anything like that.

If an election hurts our leverage than our leverage is terrible. That’s how I guess I would put it. So, you know, hopefully yeah, people can kind of just be nice to each other because they’re writers. And we deserve that from each other.

**John:** Absolutely. All right, let’s do a final bit of follow up. Back in Episode 399 we sat down with a bunch of studio executives to talk about how they give notes and how they could give better notes. Steph Cowan wrote in, Craig would you read what Steph wrote for us?

**Craig:** Sure. Steph writes, “I was right in the middle of a what-am-I-doing-with-my-life-I’m-not-cut-out-for-this moment when I heard your episode Talking Austin in Austin with Lindsay Doran. At the time I’d been working in the theater industry developing new musicals for about eight years. I’d been told that I’m too nice and cared too much to be a commercial producer and that I’m better suited for the lit department of a non-profit instead.

“Then Lindsay Doran said something like as a producer I consider myself the guardian of the storytelling. And I teared up. This was exactly how I felt. It’s still how I feel. And to hear a successful, admirable producer say it was deeply reassuring. I felt that reassurance again when Craig said I think you’re told not to be vulnerable, addressing studio executives in Episode 399. He’s right. We are, in the Broadway world anyway.

“Knowing that showing our love for the story and the team is strength gives me hope that maybe I am cut out for this. It’s also very exciting for me to hear how to give more effective notes. I can’t wait to share this episode with my colleagues.”

John, this is great. Especially because Steph comes from Broadway and we love Broadway.

**John:** We love Broadway. I’m headed to Broadway soon to see four shows in a very short period of time. But my experience making a Broadway show is that there is that function of a producer in terms of being a cheerleader, in terms of being a person who is putting a giant hug around an idea which is still forming. It is really crucial. And so you look for those ones who can do what Lindsay Doran says and sort of be a champion and a challenger and a person pushing you to make the very best thing. So, it sounds like that’s what Steph was taking out of these two episodes.

**Craig:** You know what? I’m starting to think this podcast is a good idea.

**John:** Maybe so. Maybe you should keep doing just a few more.

**Craig:** Why not?

**John:** Unless it turns out that we are wrong about the words of English.

**Craig:** Let’s find out.

**John:** “Hi Craig. I’m one of those Johnny Came Lately show listeners who have washed up because of Chernobyl. Sorry. I’m sure a bunch of people have already pointed this out but I just listened to a second podcast where you poured scorn on “heigth” specifically, characterizing it as a construction of illiterate youth. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is old school. It was good enough for Milton and it’s good enough for us, right?”

And then there’s a link, line 324 if you’re following the link in the show notes. “Cheers and thanks for a really well put together podcast.”

**Craig:** Well thank you anonymous writer. I’m glad you washed ashore as a result of Chernobyl. So, of course, I felt a little bit red-cheeked here. I mean, am I wrong? Is heigth a word? Maybe it is. If it’s good enough for Milton – that sounded like a pretty smart phrase.

So I went ahead and looked at the reference here which is, of course, to Paradise Lost, book two, line 324. And in line 324 it says, “In heigth or depth, still first and last will reign.” OK, that’s embarrassing. But I’d like to point out that five lines later it says, “War hath determined us and foiled with loss.” War is spelled with two Rs and foiled has no E. We don’t do that anymore. This is archaic. It is not applicable.

I mean, if we’re going to say that heigth is acceptable because it’s in Milton I guess we can start spelling war W-A-R-R. No. I reject this. I reject this.

**John:** [laughs] Yeah. And you know what? For arbitrary reasons. Language can change. Language can grow, evolve. Absolutely. But if Craig says no, Craig can say no. And he’s just not going to use that word. He’s not going to use the heigth. He’s not going to accept it.

**Craig:** And I’m also going to continue to say that people are wrong. Unless, here’s the exception: if somebody randomly says heigth and I’m like did you just say heigth, and they said, “Well yeah, I know, but Milton,” I’ll say stop, you can do it. Just you.

**John:** So the Milton clause is what gets you out of it.

**Craig:** Milton clause.

**John:** The Milton clause. All right. Let’s do our marquee topic. This was inspired by a conversation with Katie Silberman two episodes back. Also I just saw Andrea Berloff’s movie The Kitchen and I had a Twitter conversation with Alison Luhrs who is a designer at Wizards of the Coast and she’s going to be coming on the show in a future episode. But they were all talking about the process of writing. Katie Silberman did all these pages in advance before she started actually writing. She would dialogue pages endlessly to do stuff.

Andrea Berloff was talking about the research she did for The Kitchen. Alison Luhrs was talking about these giant encyclopedias they built for these fantasy worlds that they’re doing for Match of the Gathering and for Dungeons and Dragons.

And so I want to talk just a bit about how do you know when you’ve done enough of that prep stuff and that you’re really ready to write. And Craig and I have different perspectives on this. We do different kind of advanced work. But I want to talk about how each of us feels like, OK, I’m ready to actually start writing scenes.

**Craig:** Yeah. So this may be one of those things where we talk through it and ultimately what it boils down to is we each have our own finger print about this. And what it comes down to is when are you comfortable. When do you feel like you actually can do the good stuff? Which is finding yourself in that moment and writing out a scene and feeling really good about it.

And for me, and this has been this way for so long, I mean, it’s almost getting more this way: I really love to prepare. I love to know exactly what every scene is going to be and what happens in it, even though of course I can deviate. I’m one of those people that goes all the way basically to I need to know what the script is before I start writing the script. And I guess maybe in that regard I’m probably closer to Katie Silberman than I am to you I’m thinking.

**John:** Yeah. And I’m very much not that. But I think the kinds of things that I want to know are probably similar to things you want to know, it’s just that you’re actually doing a written down version of it and I’m just carrying a bunch of stuff in my head and not writing it down.

**Craig:** Right.

**John:** And why it’s relevant really for this season and this moment is I think you’re just about to start writing something new, or you have already started writing something new?

**Craig:** I’m about to start writing something new. Correct.

**John:** As am I. So this is top of mind for me. Also this is development season. So this is when new TV shows are getting pitched and people are starting to write them. So a lot of people are at this moment right now in town.

**Craig:** There’s still a season to these things?

**John:** There’s still a season certainly for broadcast. We’ve been through staffing and now the folks who are generally not in a room on a show are developing for stuff and they’re going out and pitching things to networks and studios. So that still exists.

**Craig:** All right. Well, good.

**John:** So let’s talk about the idea. And so for me before I start actually writing any scenes I want to know what is this movie or show, what does it look like/feel like if you sort of squint your mind a little bit. What is the shape of it? What category is it? What does it feel like? What does the music feel like? This is the time where I might start putting together a playlist of the music that feels like the show or the movie to me. I think about the trailer. I think about the one sheet. I just feel like pulling back far out, even not looking at specific story, what kind of movie is that. And I need to know that really early on and certainly before I start writing.

**Craig:** Yeah. Obviously I’ve just sort of given my thing away, but speaking specifically of that, that’s the big one. You can – I think anyone can start whenever they want, but after that. Because I think a lot of people think that what they need to start writing is an idea. And an idea, if it’s just the plot, if it’s just the log line, that’s actually not enough.

**John:** Oh not at all.

**Craig:** Not enough. If what you have is, ooh, what if a guy woke up and every day was the same day. That’s not enough. You need to know about why that idea matters.

**John:** Yeah. A thing we talk about on the show a lot is that many ways screenwriting is making a movie in your head and then writing the description of like that movie that you see in your head. And so if you don’t have the basis for sort of like what does this look like in my head, what does this sound like, what does it feel like, then you’re not anywhere close to really starting to write. So I suspect for Chernobyl you had done the research and you had a sense of like visually what does this feel like. What is going to feel like to be watching this show? And you have to have that early on.

And to me that comes before the characters. The characters are the next really crucial step here, but I need to know sort of what kind of thing am I trying to do and who are the characters who are populating this world. Not just my hero. I need to know what are the relationships between the central characters. Where would we find them at the start? Where would they get to by the end? What is the trajectory that they’re going through?

So even though unlike Craig I’m not going to do a full outline that’s sort of going scene by scene, I definitely need to know who are these people and what is the journey that they’re going to be going on through this block of time.

**Craig:** Yeah. You can see your guide posts along the way. So you understand no matter what’s happening, even if you’re not necessarily writing from a description of what the scene should be, you understand where you’ve come from and you understand where you’re going. And if you don’t know where you’re coming from and you don’t know where you’re going, that’s when screenplays start getting very purpley and self-indulgent and talky and flabby. I mean, I’ve seen this so many times where I just think they didn’t know.

**John:** They didn’t know.

**Craig:** They were just writing their way through a forest hoping that they would stumble across something. And eventually they do, but that’s their problem. I’m not here to go on your fact-finding mission. I’m here to go on a carefully curated tour of your deep dark forest. So, I mean, you can obviously find your way through those things, but you can’t show it to anybody until you’ve–

**John:** Yeah. And the thing is you can have your general idea, you can have your characters, but unless you sort of knew what is specifically the story of this movie, which comes down to a thing we’ve talked a lot about recently which is what is that central dramatic question, what is that central argument, what is the thing the movie or the episode of television is really about. And if you don’t know that going in – sometimes you can succeed honestly. There’s been stuff I’ve started writing where I didn’t really quite know what is that thematic thing that’s pulling it all together, but I had – even if I couldn’t say it aloud I had a sense of what it felt like. I had a sense of what I was going for. What space this occupied. And it’s the scripts that you read where I just don’t think you actually know where you’re going are the ones where they didn’t have a sense of that right when they started writing.

**Craig:** Yeah. I mean, listening to you, what you’re not talking about is plot.

**John:** No.

**Craig:** I mean, I think this is where people go wrong. They think they’re ready to write when they know what the plot is. The plot – first of all, I don’t even know how you know what the plot is unless you know the things that you’re talking about. Because at that point then you’re probably just creating something episodic and plotty with no purpose or meaning or anything greater than that.

You do need to do all this kind of internal psychological examination of why this story should exist. I mean, when you write a screenplay you are writing a proposal for some entity to invest tens of millions of dollars into its creation. Why? Why? Why would anyone do that to your thing? Well that’s the question you’re asking yourself now and that’s the question you need to answer before you start.

**John:** Yeah. At a certain point you are going to start thinking about plot. You’re going to be thinking about what are the moments. What are the set pieces? What are the moments in the story where things take a big turn? If this were a broadcast episode or pilot you’d be thinking what are the act breaks? Where are the moments where things really take a big turn, where are the cliffhangers in the story?

Before I would start writing I would have to have a sense of what are those big really visual things that are going to show what has happened in the story. So that’s where I need a sense of what is the world like. What is the world like at the start of the movie? What are the different sort of sets or places I’m going to be seeing over the course of this story?

I say this on the podcast a lot, but Susan Stroman, director of Big Fish, said she never wanted to see the same set twice. I don’t hold myself to that, but I definitely like her sense that we should not be coming back to the same place without there having been a change. Without something fundamental having been changed about the character or that place or the situation if we’re coming back to this thing. So what is the geographic journey of this story and what is the color journey through the story. What is changing about how this looks on screen as I’m going through this story?

I’ll have that sense pretty early on, generally before I’ve started writing any scenes.

**Craig:** This goes a little bit to that notion of the dialectic. You’re creating something and then it must change. There must be a constant change happening in storytelling. If you end up in that flat space or that circular space people will start to feel bored and for good reason. You’re treading water. You’re almost wasting time. I don’t know how else to put it. You’re literally wasting people’s time.

Good stories are narratives in which people’s relationships with each other, themselves, and the world around them are constantly changing. Every single scene exists in order to create a change. So you’re absolutely right. Coming back around to some place you’ve been before is only interesting if you’re different or that place is different. And the contrast is the whole purpose, right? So, these things need to be determined. If you end up just sort of noodling your way I think you probably will find yourself in that same diner having a similar conversation again.

**John:** Yep. Let’s talk about the dangers of starting too early. And starting the process of actually writing scenes too early before you have that stuff figured out. To me it’s that in the times where I’ve done it myself I outline my supply lines, like I get too far ahead of myself and I just haven’t built the infrastructure behind me to get myself forward, to get myself to this next thing. And so, man, I wrote a great first ten pages. Man, that’s a good first 30 pages. Wow, I have no idea how to get through the next 90. I didn’t have enough story figured out or I didn’t have enough figured out about how I was going to get from this point to a point I know I’m going to head towards later on. So outrunning myself is a real problem if I haven’t really thought through where stuff is.

I’ve often found myself where I have the right hero in the wrong story. I have the right story with the wrong hero. If I haven’t done that real thinking I might have smooshed these two things together but they’re not well suited for each other. And I would have been able to figure that out if I really thought through all those other things before I started writing scenes.

**Craig:** Yeah. I also think one of the dangers of starting too early is inefficiency of storytelling. As you go through you will be incapable of writing tightly, meaning everything has been really carefully considered so that the audience has experienced a pure storytelling unfold in front of them, a kind of a pure storytelling unfold in front of them, rather than a meandering or a wandering about or any kind of circular motion. But rather everything has been carefully machined so that there is – we understand that scenes have transitions and that this scene is a reflection of a scene earlier. And that this moment recontextualizes that moment.

There is essentially craft going on. And part of craft is efficiency of craft. It’s no wasted space. No wasted cloth. No wasted movement. But rather an elegance as if this thing had landed whole and already told in your lap. And it’s hard to do that when you’re kind of making it up as you go.

**John:** Yep. Let’s also talk about the dangers of starting too late. And I don’t know if you’ve encountered this much in your career, but there have been projects where I kind of did all the prep work and I maybe overdid the prep work a little bit and by the time I started writing I kind of gotten past it. Where the thing that attracted me to it was no longer attractive to me and I was looking at this as a chore rather than a thing I was excited to write.

And so I think part of the reason why sometimes I don’t do the laborious preparation is that I’m afraid of falling out of love with something, or being distracted by something else that’s newer and shinier. I want to start writing when I’m still really attracted and excited by this property. There’s a passion to it. And sometimes if I’ve burned off that passion in outlines and other things, especially if I had to show them with other people, then the actual starting to write is no longer thrilling for me.

**Craig:** Interesting. Yeah, I can totally see that being a problem. Certainly I think one of the hallmarks of starting too late is you’re dealing from fear. Something is holding you – you’re afraid to write. I think a lot of times people abuse the pre-writing process, whether it’s outlining or research not to set themselves up for writing success but rather to avoid writing failure. They’re only valuable to set yourself up for success. They are only useful tools. They can’t forestall any trouble. So at some point you’re going to have to dive in.

For me, I do feel a little bit of a sense of exhaustion and completion once I’m done with a 50-page scriptment. But then take a week or two and then when you start writing what you find is – at least I find – that the act of now full creation of a scene is invigorating again. That rather than thinking about an entire movie and a whole series of movements and character changes and resolutions and reversals, all I have to think about is this one little short film. And that is – that kind of makes me fall in love with it all over again. And I get to do that without worrying that I don’t know what to do next, because I do know what to do next.

**John:** Yeah. That is definitely an advantage to that is – what’s ironic is that I’m a person who tends to write out of sequence. You’re more likely to write in sequence. You could write out of sequence probably more easily–

**Craig:** Right.

**John:** Because any of those moments – you could take a moment from page 30 of your script and just write it because you know it’s going to fit back in. I will write something because it’s what appeals to me to write that day. So even within I think all of our suggestions about figuring out adequate preparation and that everyone is different, it really does come down to people ultimately recognize what they need to have done before they start writing. And you should try some different things to figure out what works for you so you actually get scripts written and finished that you are happy with.

**Craig:** Yeah. I mean, maybe a general rule of thumb is if you find yourself frightened while you’re writing, and scared of the dark, then maybe you should be putting more time in ahead of time. If you find yourself feeling a bit dry and a bit like a horse on a lead, then maybe you need to do less to start with so that you have a little bit more of a sense of play while you’re going. You just have to dial into yourself.

But listen to what your mind is telling you as you go. Because none of this is orthodoxy. It’s all really about what makes your unique brain put out its best work.

**John:** Agreed. All right, let’s take two questions. First we have Leslie from Australia. She writes, “I’m questioning my sanity because I’m currently in a disagreement with a producer over what constitutes a polish versus a draft and I’m hoping you can help shed some light on this. I was hired and paid to write a feature for this producer. He and his backer loved what I did. I gave them a couple free polishes afterwards to address some feedback we got from a mucky-muck in the industry and they were delighted with that, too.

“A second producer has come onboard and given his notes on what he thinks needs changing. The first producer and his backer now agree with him and they’ve asked me how much I’d charge for a polish, or as they put it, ‘A strong polish.’ I told them the changes they’re asking for amounted to a draft, not a polish, or even a ‘strong polish,’ whatever that is, but they disagreed. So, when I gave them a reasonable quote for a draft they rejected it. I would love to get your take on what a polish is versus a draft. I may be way off base – I don’t think I am – but I’m willing to be schooled.

“Also, I’ve never heard of the term ‘strong polish’ before. Is that even a thing?”

Craig?

**Craig:** That is not a thing.

**John:** No.

**Craig:** No. No, no, no, Leslie. That’s not a thing. That is a term invented by con artists to get you to do more for less. I mean, that’s all that’s going on here. They want more for less.

Here’s a rough rule, because there is not a ton of super specificity about this. And when you say a draft, for those of us here we would probably call that a rewrite. In my mind a polish is something that happens in about three weeks, or less. And if it’s more than that, it’s a rewrite. That’s kind of roughly how it goes. So, that’s sort of what I would say. And then the question is how much can you do in three weeks? Whatever you’re comfortable with doing.

So generally speaking a polish would not be re-rigging the plot. It would be fixing some characters. It would be maybe one or two characters need some work on their dialogue. There’s two scenes that need kind of reinventing or reimagining. That feels like a polish.

If they’ve got systematic issues that they need you to address or want you to address, that’s a rewrite. And if they don’t want to pay for it they can gaslight you all they want. They can tell you it’s a polish all they want. They can invent new phrases like strong polish. But that’s gas-lighting. They’re just trying to get more for less.

**John:** So, Leslie, even if you were working here, even if you were working in this town with schedules of minimums and things like this, you would still be dealing with this question of calling this a rewrite, calling this a polish. Them trying to get you to do more for a little bit less.

WGA has specific terms for what polish means and for what a rewrite means. Polish involves character work and dialogue. Things that change story in a major way tend to be rewrites. But functionally Craig is correct when he says it’s really more about time. That’s what we think about when we think about a polish. A polish is a matter of just a week or two, three weeks. If it’s multiple weeks and a lot of work that tends to be a rewrite.

And so Leslie I think you were right to be suspicious and I’m sorry that this didn’t work out on this draft. But whether they called that a polish or a rewrite, they didn’t want to pay you money for it and that’s where I think it comes down to it.

**Craig:** Well they wanted to pay her something, just not what she deserves. And I’ll point out you’ve already done a couple of free polishes.

**John:** Yes!

**Craig:** So this is what happens. We are not rewarded for “good behavior.” We’re punished for it. They don’t look at you as somebody who has done them a solid favor and therefore they now owe you something. What they do is look at you as somebody that they exploited successfully and so they will continue to exploit you. That’s what bullies do.

Now, when it comes to capitalism that’s essentially what capitalism is. It’s economic bullying. And they’re going to do what you’re going to do. And so you’re going to have to stand up for yourself and say no. And based on the way you’re describing this I’m just wondering where the copyright for this rests. You’re in Australia. I don’t think they have work-for-hire there. You may have more leverage than you think. I think it’s time for you to get somebody else involved to help represent you with them.

You’ve probably seen a lot of cop shows where the job of the police is to convince their suspect to not bring a lawyer in because if they bring a lawyer in it’s going to be much harder to get them to spill their guts and confess. Well, this is sort of like that. These guys don’t want you to bring a lawyer in. So, bring a lawyer in.

**John:** Agreed. Do you want to take Justin’s question?

**Craig:** Justin from Hawthorne asks, “Hello Screen Wizards.” I like Justin. “I’m writing today to see if the tales of the Do Not List from Hell exist in present times. I’ve heard rumors of this list but I can’t imagine it to be true. I’m worried I might be on it and I’m praying that the years of hard work attempts to crack open a career as a screenwriter won’t be thwarted by earnest and possibly haphazard times when maybe I was too eager or submitted my material too early? If it’s real, can somebody who is on this list ever get off of it?”

**John:** So I provided some off-mic context for Craig because this Do Not List is apparently an idea that producers or studios or other folks in town have a list of like never hire this person, or like there’s a do not list. This person is a hack and don’t hire them.

I think individual people will have their lists of writers they don’t want to hire, but it’s generally because they worked with the writers and the writers were bad for them. You writing something that wasn’t good, it doesn’t help you, but it doesn’t hurt you for a long time. It doesn’t stick around. People’s memories are kind of short when it comes to stuff they didn’t like. If they read a script that they really like of yours, they’ll hire you on to do more things.

So, I would say don’t be worried about your early work. Always be mindful if you’re sending stuff out make sure it’s good and it’s professional and that it’s showing your best light. But if you didn’t, stop worrying about it. Instead worry about writing good new stuff.

**Craig:** Yeah. When people read something that someone has submitted, an original or something like that, and they don’t like it, they throw it out. They don’t run to a special list called Oh My God This Person Wrote a Terrible Script. Because they know as well as anybody that somebody can write a terrible script and then four weeks write something wonderful. That does happen, right? Sometimes we’re working in the wrong genre. Sometimes for whatever reason it just doesn’t work.

John is correct. There are lists. First of all, there are lists. It’s important for people to know that. I’ve seen them. They exist. There are lists. And those lists are people that either a studio or a producer believes are well worth hiring and working with and they can make levels of them. I mean, the whole phrase A-list came from original list had A, B, C. And there are lists of, nope, we’re not hiring that person here. They usually don’t write that down because they don’t want to deal with any legal issues, but they are always on that list because there’s been a bad employment experience.

**John:** Yep.

**Craig:** Not because they wrote a bad script. If the studio hasn’t paid for it, they’re not going to blame you for it, dude. Most scripts are bad. How about that? You’re going to be fine.

**John:** Yep. He’s going to be fine.

**Craig:** He’s going to be fine.

**John:** Let’s do our One Cool Things. I have two One Cool Things this week. The first is a delicious cookie. It is the Oreo Thin.

**Craig:** I love those.

The second is a thin book. It is Monsters and Creatures: A Young Adventurer’s Guide. It’s by the D&D people. And what I like about it is it’s designed for young middle grade readers and they’re smaller books. They’re hardcover, but they just have all the cool illustrations of dragons and owlbears and all this stuff. Basically art work that Wizards probably had sitting around and they found a good way to repackage it and write some new text. It’s written by Jim Zub.

**Craig:** Hold on.

**John:** What a great name, right?

**Craig:** I think Jim Zub is in the monster manual. I think I’ve faced off a crimson Jim Zub.

**John:** They’re nicely done and to me it feels like if I were a six-year-old kid who was obsessed with dinosaurs I would also be obsessed with these books because it’s dragons and cool stuff. There’s other books – Warriors and Weapons, Dungeons and Tombs. So if you have somebody who you want to give this kind of gift to who is not really ready for actual D&D it feels like a good starter thing.

**Craig:** You round the corner and see in the room a giant Zub. What do you do? [laughs]

**John:** Yeah. So is a Zub one of the things where you stab with your sword and then your sword rusts away?

**Craig:** Probably. That seems Zub-like.

**John:** Zub-like.

**Craig:** It’s definitely Zub-like. Well, listen, you had two One Cool Things. I’m going to give our listeners a break and just say they deserve two One Cool Things. And also I didn’t have one.

Craig Mazin: Hello and welcome. My name is Craig Mazin and this is Episode 403 of Scriptnotes, a podcast about screenwriting and things that are interesting to screenwriters.

On today’s show, something we have never done before. It’s just me. No guest. No John. He’s off visiting family I believe in Colorado. So it’s just me today. And we’re going to do something that I’ve been looking forward to doing for a long time. I’m going to be talking to you today about structure and character. I’m kind of giving you my whole theory on how to write a movie.

I know it sounds like a lot. And it is a little bit of a lot. It’s a talk that I’ve done at the Austin Screenwriting Film Festival a number of times. I haven’t done it in a while. And I feel like their exclusive right to it has ended, so now I’m giving it to you. This is sort of my how-to write a movie.

But before we get into that we do have a little bit of business to go through. And it’s about our live show. Our next live show, we’ve talked about this before. All right. Let’s get into it. So when we talk about writing a script a lot of times we’re talking about structure. There are, I don’t know, four million books about structure. I went online and I looked for just images based on screenplay structure and what I saw was kind of mind-blowing. There are these long narrow lines with little ticks on them and then there’s a pie chart. And then there’s a swirly thing that kind of looks like a snail shell. There’s a triangle. There’s a diamond. I think there’s a parallelogram. And if there’s not a trapezoid maybe one of you can get on that.

All of this is designed to help you learn how to structure a screenplay. Here’s the problem. All of it is done from the wrong end. All of it. It’s all done from the point of view of analysis. They look at things, they take them apart, and then they say, look, all these pieces fit into this swirly shape, or this diamond. The issue is that’s not going to help you actually write anything because when you write you’re starting from scratch. You’re not breaking something apart. You’re building something out of nothing. And when you’re building something out of nothing you need a different set of instructions.

I can think of a doctor who takes bodies apart. That’s a medical examiner or a coroner. That’s not the doctor you want to go to to make a baby for instance. It’s just a very different thing, right? So we’re going to come at it from the point of view of making babies and your baby is your script. Don’t worry, we’re going to keep this safe for work.

So, structure. Structure, structure, structure. Screenplay is structure. You need to know how to do your structure. Structure I’m here to tell you is a total trap. Yes, screenplay is structure, but structure isn’t what you think it is. Structure doesn’t say this happens on this page, this happens on that page. Here’s a pinch point. Here’s a stretchy point. Here’s a midpoint. Structure doesn’t tell you what to do. If you follow strict structural guidelines in all likelihood you will write a very well structured bad script.

Structure isn’t the dog. It’s the tail. Structure is a symptom. It’s a symptom of a character’s relationship with a central dramatic argument. Take a moment. Think about that for a second. I’ll repeat it. Structure is a symptom of a character’s relationship with a central dramatic argument. Structure isn’t something you write well. It’s something that happens because you wrote well. Structure is not a tool, it is a symptom.

When we think of rigid structural forms I have to tell you there’s nothing honest about them. There’s nothing true about them. They’re synthetic. There’s never been one single great writer who created one single great screenplay following a structural template. Not one.

What real writers follow are their characters. And what great writers follow are their characters as they evolve around a central dramatic argument that is actually meaningful to other human beings. Let me stop for a second and tell you that we are going to get into real practicals but for a bit now we’re just going to talk a little bit of philosophy. First, let’s consider what we call basic structure. There’s a Syd Field point of view. You have your three acts, your inciting incident, act break escalation, magical midpoint character shift, third act low point, and kick off to climactic action.

We also have the Chris Vogler Hero’s Journey, ordinary world, call to action, refusal of call, acceptance of call, and blah, blah, blah. Save the Cat is a lot of stuff.

There’s a lot of what to do but where’s the why? Who came up with this stuff in the first place? Why is it there? Why are there three acts at all? Why is there a low point? Why do we like it when there’s an inciting incident? Why do we like it when there’s a low point? If we don’t know why those things are there how are we supposed to know how to write them? Because we process the world through our consciousness and our consciousness is sort of a natural storyteller, all of us are actually walking around doing this right all the time. We just don’t know it. We’re narrativizing our own lives better than most who try and do it on purpose on Fade In or WriterDuet, or Highland2. I don’t know any other software.

Right now you’re sitting there, you’re riding along in your car, you’re being passive. You are accepting this structure talk, wondering when I’m going to get to the practicals. And I will. But later if someone asks you about this experience you’re having you will naturally, without thinking, create a story. You won’t have to consult a graph or a chart or a swirly thing. You’ll just tell the story.

Here’s a story. I listened to a podcast. It was on the following topics. Reasonable people could agree or disagree. Anyway, I’m the same. That’s not a very good story, is it?

Here’s another story. I was listening to a podcast and it was OK, it was sort of a little boring, but then the person said this one thing and it reminded me of something else I’d heard once and that tied back to this moment in my life where something really interesting happened. And now I’m wondering maybe if I was wrong about that thing and I should be doing it this way instead. Huh. There you go. And that story has character, meaning you. That story is about you and maybe it’s about me. It’s about a relationship that we’re having right now through this podcast, for better or worse.

And if you were to relay this story, this experience, you might share some parts of this that you thought were interesting or some parts that you thought were stupid, but you will naturally contextualize it as such. This moment in time did or did not help you in your desire to change. We live our lives this way, but when we sit down to write we somehow forget. You know who never forgets? Actors. They have to get it because they are the characters and we are experiencing them as the characters.

So there’s that old cliché line: what’s my motivation? Well it’s not a joke. Believe it or not that is the key to structure. What is the purpose of all this storytelling that we engage in, all this narration? Well, narration helps us move through a changing world. And story is about a change of state. There are three basic ways your story changes. And this applies I think to every possible story.

The first way is internal. This is what is going on inside the character’s mind. This is the things they’re thinking, they’re feeling, their emotions. And this axis goes all over the place. It zigzags up and down. Then there’s interpersonal. That’s the main relationship of your story. It has a start, it has an end. It usually begins in a kind of neutral way. Then depending on how your story unfolds it can dip and then rise and then plummet and then spike. And finally you have the external axis. That’s the narrative, the plot, the things that are going on around you. And that generally is just a straight line. Start to end.

All of this is made up of scenes. And within scenes we’re doing something that follows the Hegelian dialectic. Calm down. You don’t need to look it up. I’ll help you out. The Hegelian Dialectic basically is a way of thinking about how we formulate ideas and thoughts and arguments. You take a thesis. That’s a statement. Something is true. And then you apply to that an antithesis. No, that’s not true and here’s why. Those things collide and in theory what results from that is a new thesis called the synthesis. And that starts the whole process over again. That synthesis becomes a thesis. There’s an antithesis. A new synthesis. That becomes a thesis. Constant changing. Every scene begins with a truth, something happens inside of that scene. There is a new truth at the end and you begin, and you begin, and you begin.

And who is the person firing these antitheses at these theses? You.

So, as we go through this talk never forget this one simple fact. At any given moment as you begin a scene you have a situation that is involving those three axes and you are going to fire something at at least one of them to make something new. That is all story is. But what is the glue that holds all those changes together? What’s the glue that you the creator can use to come up with your antitheses and get your new syntheses and do it over and over again?

And that brings us to theme. Theme is otherwise known as unity. Unity is a term that was first used by Aristotle in Poetics and this is one you actually should read. I know you’re like, Aristotle? Hegel? Hegelian guy. Calm down. It’s fine. In fact, Aristotle was really a contemporary writer in his own way. Poetics is an easy read. It will take you about 30 minutes. It’s a pretty good bathroom book. And in it you’ll find a lot of things that we hear today, like for instance the worst kind of plot is an episodic plot. Well, that’s pretty much true.

What did he think of unity or theme? Well basically theme is your central dramatic argument. Some of those arguments are interesting. Some of them are a little cliché. And the quality of the argument itself isn’t necessarily related to the quality of the script. For instance, you can have a really good screenplay built around you can’t judge a book by its cover. That’s OK. The theme itself doesn’t have to be mind-altering or, I don’t know, revolutionary. It’s your execution around it that’s going to be interesting.

But the important thing is that the argument has to be an argument. I think sometimes people misunderstand the use of theme in this context and they think a theme for a screenplay could be brotherhood. Well, no. Because there’s nothing to argue about there. There’s no way to answer that question one way or the other. It’s just a vague concept.

But, man and women can’t just be friends, well, that’s an argument. Better to be dead than a slave. Life is beautiful, even in the midst of horrors. If you believe you are great, you will be great. If you love someone set them free. Those are arguments.

Screenplays without arguments feel empty and pointless. You will probably get some version of the following note. What is this about? I mean, I know what it’s about, but what is it about? Why should this movie exist? What is the point of all this?

Now, it’s really important to note you probably don’t want to start with an argument. That’s a weird way to begin a script. Usually we think of an idea. And that’s fine. But when you think of the idea the very next question you should ask is what central dramatic argument would fit really well with this? And ideally you’re going to think ironically. For instance, let’s talk about this idea. A fish has to find another fish who is somewhere in the ocean. Got it. The animators will love it. Water. Fish. Cool.

OK, let’s think of a central dramatic argument. How about if you try hard enough you can do anything, even find a fish? That’s a bit boring, isn’t it? How about sometimes the things we’re searching for are the things that we need to be free from? Well, OK. That’s an interesting argument. I’m not sure how it necessarily is served or is being served by this idea of a fish in the ocean. How about you can’t find happiness out there, you have to find it within yourself? That could work. That’s sort of Wizard of Oz-ish.

But let’s go really ironically. How about this one? No matter how much you want to hold onto the person you love, sometimes you have to set them free. Well, that is pretty cliché but it is a great central dramatic argument to pair with a fish needs to find another fish. Because when you’re looking for somebody out there in the deep, deep ocean you the writer know that what you’re promising is they’re going to find them and then have to let them go anyway. And that is starting to get good.

All right. Let’s get into some practicals, shall we? Because this is thematic structure. This is going to help you write your script. In thematic structure the purpose of the story – and listen carefully now – the purpose of the story is to take a character from ignorance of the truth of the theme to embodiment of the theme through action. I shall repeat. The purpose of the story is to take your main character, your protagonist, from a place of ignorance of the truth or the true side of the argument you’re making and take them all the way to the point where they become the very embodiment of that argument and they do it through action.

So, let’s talk about how we introduce. We begin in the beginning with the introduction of a protagonist in an ordinary world. You’ve probably heard this a thousand times. But why? Sometimes movies don’t start ordinarily. You probably saw Mad Max: Fury Road. If you didn’t, do so. Well, there’s no ordinary beginning there. I mean, it’s crazy from the jump. Ordinary doesn’t mean mundane. Although sometimes it can.

What ordinary means here is that the protagonist’s life essentially exemplifies their ignorance of the theme, of the argument that you want them to believe eventually. In fact, they believe the opposite of that argument. That’s how they begin. Typically in the beginning of a story your main character believes in the opposite of the theme and they have also achieved some kind of stasis. There’s a balance in their life. In fact, their ignorance of that theme has probably gotten them to this nice place of stasis and balance. It doesn’t mean they’re happy. What it means is that without the divine nudge of the writer-god their life could go on like this forever. It’s not a perfect life. It’s not the best life they could live but it’s the life they’ve settled for. Their stasis is acceptable imperfection.

If we’re going to circle back around to my favorite fish movie, Marlin can live with a resentful son as long as he knows his son is safe. That’s acceptable imperfection. I get it. Nemo resents me. He’s angry at me. He feels stifled by me. That’s OK. He’s alive. I can keep going this way.

And then along comes you, the writer. Your job is to disrupt that stasis. So you invent some sort of incident. Ah-ha. Now we know the point of the inciting incident. The point of the inciting incident is not to go, “Oh god, a meteor!” The point of the inciting incident is to specifically disrupt a character’s stasis. It makes the continuation of balance and stasis and acceptable imperfection impossible. It destroys it. And it forces a choice on the character.

OK, but why? I’m just going to keep asking that question. But why? But why? But why? Why do you have to do this to this poor character? Because you are the parent and you have a lesson to teach this person, or animal, or fish. Your motivation is part of your relationship to your character. You don’t write an inciting incident. You don’t write push character out of safety. That gives you no real guidance to let something blossom. What you write is an ironic disruption of stasis. Ironic as in a situation that includes contradictions or sharp contrasts that is, and hear me out, genetically engineered to break your character’s soul.

You’re going to destroy them. You are god. And you are designing a moment that will begin a transformation for this specific character so you have to make it intentional. It can be an explosion, or it can be the tiniest little change. But it’s not something that would disrupt everyone’s life the way it’s disrupting this person’s life. You have tailored it perfectly and terribly for them.

So, what’s the first thing your character wants to do when this happens to them? Well, it they’re like you or me they’re going to immediately try and just get back to what they had. They have to leave their stasis behind because you’ve destroyed it, but everything they’re going to do following that is done in service of just trying to get it back. Shrek doesn’t have his swamp, so he has to go on a journey so he can get his swamp back. The point here is that the hero has absolutely no idea that there is a central dramatic argument. They’ve made up their mind about something and their mind has not changed.

Your heroes should be on some level cowards. I don’t mean coward like shaking in your boots. I mean coward like I don’t want to change. I’m happy with the way things are. Please just let me be. And underlining that is fear. And fear, especially in your character, is the heart of empathy. I feel for characters when I fear with them. It is vulnerability. It’s what makes me connect. Every protagonist fears something.

Imagine a man who fears no other man. He doesn’t fear death. He doesn’t fear pain. But, ah-ha, fill in that blank. But the point is it has to be filled in. You can feel it, right? Like he’s going to have to fear something. Because fear is our connection to a character. And a fearful hero should have lived their lives to avoid the thing they’re afraid of.

You, are taking their safety blanket away. So I want you to write your fearful hero honestly. What do they want? They want to return to what they had. They want to go backwards. And believe it or not that is the gift that is going to drive you through the second act. The second act.

Oh, the thing that’s so scary. No. No, you should be excited about it. Let me take a break for a second and say that everything I’m talking about here is mostly to serve the writing of what I would call a traditional Hollywood movie. That doesn’t mean. It doesn’t mean cliché. It doesn’t even mean formulaic. It just means it’s a traditional narrative. So, I don’t know, if you’re looking to be a little more Lars von Trier about things, well, I don’t know how interesting or helpful this is going to be. But I’m presuming that most of you just want to write a general kind of movie that conforms to a general kind of movie shape.

So this is how we’re going to help you do it. And the second act is the part that I think freaks people out the most. They get scared. But I think you should be excited about pages 30 to 90 roughly. Please do not quote me on those numbers. But first, are you getting it? Have you stopped thinking about plot? Have you stopped thinking about plot as something to jam characters into? Because when you do that that’s why you run out of road in your second act. You ran out of plot because it wasn’t being generated by anything except you.

Ah-ha. But when you start thinking of your plot as not something that happens to your characters but what you are doing to your characters that’s when you can lead them from anti-theme to theme. How do we do it?

First, we reinforce the anti-theme. That might sound a little counterintuitive but hear me out. You’ve knocked your hero out of their acceptable stasis. They are now on the way to do whatever they need to do to get back to it. The hero is going to experience new things. And I want you to think about making those new things reinforce her belief in an anti-theme. Because this is going to make them want to get back to the beginning even more. Oh, it’s delicious. We’re creating a torture chamber basically. Keep thinking that way.

Imagine your hero is moving backwards against you and you push them forward and they push back. Ah-ha. Good. Design moments to do this. You’re going to keep forcing them forward, but you’re also going to put things in their path that make them want to go backwards. That’s tension. That’s exciting. And more importantly when they do get past those things it will be meaningful. You want to write your world to oppose your character’s desires.

So, you’re going to reinforce their need to get back. Ah-ha. So, let’s see, Marlin wanders out into the ocean. His theory is the ocean is really, really dangerous. What should the first thing be? Maybe let’s have him meet some sharks. And actually, oh, you know what, they’re not scary at all. Oh god, yes they are. The ocean is in fact way worse than he even imagined. That’s what you need to do. He needs to get his son back really, really soon so he can return to stasis. And then when you’ve done that you’re going to introduce an element of doubt.

Something or someone lives in a different way. Someone or something in your story is an example of the life of theme rather than the life of anti-theme. So remember, your hero believes in one side of the central dramatic argument. It’s the wrong side. You want them to believe the other one. OK, but they believe the wrong one. They need to run into someone or something that believes in the right side of it. This element of doubt creates a natural conflict for the protagonist because of course I believe this, you believe that. But it’s also attractive to them on some level because – and again, really important. Your hero is rational. This is a critical component of a good hero. You are dealing with somebody that probably lives irrationally, fine, but they have to have the capacity to see that maybe there is a better way.

You’re living things maybe the wrong way but you need the capacity to see things going the right way. It is fear that separates the irrational hero from their rational potential. And because they’re rational when they get a glimpse of this other way of being they’re going to realize there’s value to it through circumstance or accident or necessity or another character’s actions. These are all things you’re inventing, but here’s why – the hero is going to experience a moment of acting in harmony with the right side of the central dramatic argument.

This could involve their own action or it could be something that they watch someone else do or something they experience passively. But this is why the magical midpoint change occurs. See, now you know why. You’re not just doing it because a book said. These things generally happen in the middle of the movie because our hero’s belief system has been challenged. There is an element of doubt. There is not a willingness to go all the way and believe the other side of the argument yet. They may not even understand the other side of the argument.

There’s only a question that maybe for the first time they have to wonder if their side of the argument that they started with, the anti-theme, maybe it doesn’t explain or solve everything. Have I been living a lie? That’s what’s happening in the middle of a movie.

So, remember in Finding Nemo there’s a moment where because Marlin has to rescue Dory from this field of jellyfish he invents a game. She forces him to do something that he normally wouldn’t do. Play. He’s doing it for the old Marlin reasons of neurosis, but it’s working. She’s following him. And as he’s doing it he gets a glimpse of what it’s like to live without fear. He gets a glimpse of what it’s like to be carefree. To not worry so much. To be, well, a little less conservative with your own life. And he loves it.

And then what happens? She gets stung. Oh, glorious. And that gets us to this reversal of theme. The very moment your hero takes the bait that you put there to think about maybe switching sides – maybe switching sides of the argument – you need to hammer them back the other direction. The story has to make them shrink back to the old way. Dory almost dies in the jellyfish. And why? It happened because Marlin decided in a moment out of necessity to have fun and then forgot himself, forgot his fear. And what’s the price of forgetting fear and not being vigilant? Pain and tragedy. The tragedy of the beginning is reinforced and the hero retreats once again.

Ah. It’s good stuff. And it means you have to be kind of mean. Sadistic really. But it turns out that these are the kinds of things we want out of our narrative. It’s the essence of what we call dramatic reversal.

I’m going to put aside the examples from Pixar for a second and I’m going to talk about somebody real. There’s a guy named Jose Fernandez. This is a true story. Jose Fernandez is born in Cuba and at the age of 15 he escapes Cuba with his mother and his sister and many others, all packed in a very small boat. And during the difficult village he is awakened to the sound of someone yelling. That someone has fallen overboard.

And Jose, 15 years old, doesn’t hesitate. He dives into the choppy water to save whoever it is. And it’s only when he drags this person back onto the boat does he realize he has saved his own mother. Wow.

Jose Fernandez grows up, he’s a hell of an athlete. He goes on to pitch. Major League baseball pitcher. And he’s really good. In fact, he is the National League Rookie of the Year. And he’s an All Star. His future isn’t just bright, it is glorious. Jose Fernandez is living the American dream and I don’t know how much you know about baseball but ace pitchers they get paid hundreds of millions of dollars.

But at the age of 24 Jose Fernandez dies. He doesn’t die from illness. He doesn’t die from violence. He dies in an accident. But not a car accident. He dies in a boating accident. A boating accident. Now, do you feel that? Do you feel more than you would if I had said he died of a blood clot? Well, why? I mean, death is death. Why does this detail of the boating accident make you feel more?

Because it’s terribly ironic. Because this is a guy who saved his own mother from water and then he dies in water. It implies that there’s a strange kind of order to the universe even when that order hurts. And this is where we start to pull irony out of drama. This is essential to your choices when you decide how you’re going to push back against your hero. How you’re going to hammer them back. How you’re going to punish them.

Think about that Pixar Short, Lava. And I talk about Pixar all the time because it’s just pure storytelling and they’re really, really good at it. So he thinks he’s alone. He’s a volcano in the ocean. He thinks he’s alone. And then he discovers he’s not alone. But when he discovers that he also discovers that she’s facing the wrong way and she can’t see him. And he doesn’t know how to sing anymore. So she doesn’t even know he’s there. Oh, that’s terrible. It’s unexpected. It’s contradictory. And it’s ironic. And that’s exactly what you want to do.

So, consider the irony that’s involved with Marlin. Marlin is worried that he has lost his son. Every parent who loses a child, even for an instant in a mall, is scared. But that’s not enough. Let’s talk about what the people at Pixar understood they needed to do to this character from the very start to punish him so that his journey would be that much more impressive. It’s not enough to say, look, you love your kid, your kid is lost, you’ve got to go find your kid. Everybody loves their kid, right?

OK. But they go a step further. They say, you know what, there’s no mom in the picture. Mom died. It’s just you. You’re a single dad. You’re the only parent. You’ve got to find your kid. No, that’s not enough. How about this? How about your wife and all of your other children were eaten in front of you because you couldn’t protect them? And the only kid you had left out of all of that, the only memory you have of your wife and your happy life before is one tiny egg. One kid.

And that is still not enough. And this is why Pixar is so amazing. Because they knew that the further they went the more we would feel at the end. It’s not enough that he only has one kid. When he looks at that little egg he can see that the one kid that’s left is disabled. He has a bad fin. Now it’s enough. Now you have created the perfect circumstance for that individual, you cruel, cruel god of story.

Now I know why he’s so panicked that that kid is somewhere out there in the ocean. When you’re designing your obstacles and your lessons and the glimpses of the other way and the rewards and the punishments and the beating back and the pushing forward, keep thinking ironically. Keep thinking about surprises that twist the knife. Don’t just stab your characters. Twist the knife in them. If someone has to face a fear make it overwhelming to them. Don’t disappoint them. Punish them.

Make your characters lower their defenses by convincing them that everything is going to be OK and then punch them right in the face, metaphorically.

So, sorry to tell you that as a writer you are not the New Testament god who turns water into wine. You are the Old Testament god who tortures Job because, I don’t know, it seems like fun. And when you’re wondering where to go in your story and what to do with your character ask this question: where is my hero on her quest between theme and anti-theme? Or I guess I should say between an anti-theme and theme. And what would be the meanest thing I could do to her right now? What would be the worst way to do the meanest thing right now? Then do it. And do it. And do it again until the hero is left without a belief at all.

So as the demands of the narrative begin to overwhelm the hero, the hero begins to realize that her limitations aren’t physical but thematic. Think about Marlin. I promised that I would never let anything happen to him. But then I suppose nothing ever would happen to him. That’s what Dory says. And Marlin knows she’s right. He knows that if all he does is basically lock his kid up to prevent anything bad from happening to his kid nothing good will happen to his kid. The kid won’t have a real life.

So, now what? Well, the answer is obvious, right? If you love someone let them go. And I’m sure that at that point in the movie if you ask Marlin that he would say, “I suppose that’s the thing that I’m supposed to believe.” But they can’t do it. Not yet. In fact, you’re going to want to have a situation where they have a chance to do it. And they fail at it in some important way because they don’t really accept the central dramatic argument you want for them. They just lost the belief in their original point of view. They’re trapped between rejection of the old and acceptance of the new. They are lost. Their old ways don’t work anymore. The new way seems impossible or insane.

Shrek doesn’t want his swamp back anymore. He wants love, but he is also not willing to do what is required to try and get it. He’s trapped. And this is why they call it the low point. It’s not random. It’s not the low point because the books say page 90 is the low point. It’s the low point because your character is lost and in a whole lot of trouble.

Their goal in the beginning, which was to go backwards to the beginning to achieve stasis, to re-achieve stasis, that goal is in shambles. Their anti-thematic belief, whatever it was that they clung to in the beginning of this story, it’s been exposed as a sham. And the enormity of the real goal that now faces them is impossibly daunting. They can’t yet accept the theme because it’s too scary. When your core values are gone and when you aren’t ready to replace them with new values, well, you might as well be dead. And this is why people go to movies.

So, granted, we love the lasers, we love the explosions, we love the ka-boom, and we love the sex, and we love the tears, but what we need from drama – and when I say drama I mean the drama of comedy and the drama of drama – what we need are these moments where we connect to another person’s sense of being lost. Because we have all been lost.

And that’s why the ending is going to work. Because without this there can be no catharsis. Catharsis comes from the Greek word for vomiting I’m pretty sure. So just think of a lot of your plot as shoving really bad food down the throat of your hero because that’s how you’re going to get to this catharsis.

Now, I want to say that these approaches don’t help you map out a second act. What these approaches do is help you develop your character as they move through a narrative. And that narrative is going to impact their relationship to theme. And when you finish that movement of this character interacting with story so that their relationship to the theme is changing from I don’t believe that to, OK, I don’t believe what I used to believe but I can’t believe that yet, suddenly you’ll be somewhere around the end of the second act.

And here is the big secret. John and I have said this many, many times. There are no acts. So you can’t really be scared of the second act. It doesn’t exist. It’s not some sort of weird wasteland you have to get through. It’s just part of one big piece. There’s one act. It’s called your story. And now we get to the third act, sorry, end of your one act. And this is the defining moment. Your character needs to face a defining moment. And this defining moment is their worst fear. It is their greatest challenge. This is the moment that will not only resolve the story that you’re telling but it will resolve the life of your character. This moment will bring them to a new stasis and balance. Remember synthesis, thesis, antithesis, synthesis. Here we are again.

But what are you going to do? You have to come up with this thing. This is the difference between what I’m saying to you now and what a lot of books say. Books will say, “Defining moment goes here.” And I’m saying, yeah, but how? What makes it so defining? You’re going to design a moment that is going to test your protagonist’s faith in the theme. They need to go through something where they have to prove that they believe this new theme. They have to prove it. It’s not enough to say, OK, I get it. What I used to think is wrong. There’s a new way that’s right. That’s not enough.

They have to prove it. And they have to prove it in a way where they literally embody the point of that idea with everything they have. But before you do that don’t you want to torture them one more time? Of course you do.

The relapse. A nice ironic relapse. You want to tempt them right before this big decision moment. Right before the defining moment. You want to hold that safety blanket up and say, “Go ahead. Go back to the beginning. You get it. The thing you wanted on page 15, I’m giving it to you. Don’t go forward. Don’t change. Go back.”

And what do they have to do? They have to reject that temptation. You design a machinery where they have to reject that temptation and then do something extraordinary – extraordinary – to embody the truth of the theme. And now you get acceptance through action. The hero acts in accordance with the theme. Specifically by doing so they prevail. They have to act.

So let’s go back to Marlin. It’s not enough for Marlin to say, “I get it now. I’ve heard the wise turtles. I’ve seen the way Dory is. I’ve learned my lesson. I’ve got to let you live.” That’s not enough. What Pixar does is create a perfect mechanism to tempt and then force action. Dory is captured. And Nemo says to Marlin, “I’m the only one who can go in there and save her.” And this is a great temptation. This is where Marlin has to reject the old way. We’re saying go ahead, you’ve got your kid, we’re giving him back to you. It’s all you wanted. On page 15 you just wanted your kid. Here he is. Get out.

But he has to act in accordance with the theme. So he rejects that and he says, “No. Go ahead, son. And try and save her.” And that simple decision is how he acts in accordance with theme. And it is terrifying. And now you get one last chance to punish him. Briefly. Go ahead. Let’s see Nemo coming out of that net and let’s think that he’s dead. And let Marlin hold him. And let Marlin remember what he was like when he was in that little egg. And let Marlin kind of be OK with it. Because that’s what it means to live in accordance with theme.

If you say, look, sometimes if you love someone you have to let them go, that’s one thing. Actually having to let them go is another thing. Letting them go and seeing them get hurt is yet another. That is the ultimate acceptance of that idea, isn’t it? And that’s what he sees.

But then, of course, faith in the theme rewards. And Nemo is alive.

So then you get this denouement. What is the denouement? Why is it there? It’s not there because we need to be slowly let down and back out in the movie theater lobby. It’s there because we need to see the new synthesis. You have successfully fired a billion antitheses against a billion theses and come up with one big, grand, lovely new synthesis. Please show it to me. So we now see that the after story life is in harmony with theme.

And here’s the deal with the first scene and the last scene of a movie. If you remove everything from the story except the introduction of your hero and the last scene of your hero there should really be only one fundamental difference. And here it is. The hero in the beginning acts in accordance with the anti-theme and the hero at the end acts in accordance with the theme.

Now, this should all help you create your character. When you’re creating character I want you to think of theme. I want you to imagine a character who embodies the anti-theme. You can be subtle about this. You probably should be. It generally works better if you are. And I want you to think of your story as a journey that guides this character from belief in the anti-theme to belief in theme. Remember you’re god – angry, angry god. You have created this test. That’s what your story is. In order to guide your character to a better way of living, but they have to make the choices.

Oh, if you’ve heard, “The worst character is a passive character,” that’s why. They have to make the choices or you’re making it for them. And then, well, it just doesn’t count, does it?

If you can write the story of your character as they grow from thinking this to the opposite of this, and guess what, you will never ask well what should happen next ever again. You’ll only ask how can I make the thing that I want to happen next better. That’s a whole other talk. Maybe I’ll do that one in like five years or something.

I hope that you found this interesting. It was kind of fun to do. I mean, I’m not going to do it frequently because it’s scary. I mean, John really does run this show. But I’m all here all alone.
