Upswing

chartIMDbPro’s MOVIEmeter charts how often people are looking for a specific film. This week, The Nines climbed from 1539 to 11 on the charts. Since we’re not the only DVD coming out this week, I have to assume that means a lot of people saw the torrent and wondered what the hell the movie was.

Nice. Now let’s hope that they care about who MADE it and come to your site.

I always wondered if an IMDbPro account was a common thing for major directors, screenwriters and actors? Being a cheapass, I see the ads for it, but never joined, didn’t know if anyone found it was useful, or maybe moreso for publicists, agents, etc.

This may explain (be connected to?) why the view counter on my entry for the “Trailer for the Nines” contest jumped from ~600 views two weeks ago to over 10,000 this morning. For three months it sat with nary a view or comment and now it is getting an average of 800 views a day.

By the way, IMHO that contest was a brilliant marketing move.

Love to see if it affects traffic on this site.

Also, if your theory is correct, I did not know torrents were how people discovered movies. :)

Interesting. My head buried deep in work for a while, I first heard of The Nines when John’s whole torrent comment hullabaloo brought me out of my toil induced stupor long enough to think “The Nines, what the heck is that? Holy crap, John August made his own Indie film and I didn’t hear about it? Why wasn’t it advertised everywhere in the universe like Juno? That’s a crying shame.” That The Nines spiked to #11 on the Moviemeter hopefully bodes well for it making good money in DVD sales. It also made this list: http://www.firstshowing.net/2007/12/24/best-19-movies-you-didnt-see-in-2007 Which got a about 1100 Diggs, so if Digg is as big a deal as Digg themselves (and Wired) claim, maybe that drove some interest as well?

I believe the story of you discussing the torrent was covered on a film news site that was linked to on digg.com… your film was given the good ol’ digg spike

I rented The Nines yesterday and thought it was an amazing piece of film making. Well done, Mr. August. And, man, can that Ryan Reynolds act!

The short film God was also good — it actually reminded me of a short I wrote a couple years back where God keeps on getting phone calls from people asking for things until he finally flips out and stops taking our phone calls.

I do have one question: why is there a trailer for Dragon Wars on the dvd? isn’t there a more character driven movie coming out that you could’ve put on there? it seemed out of place to me.

Thanks again for making this movie.

    Hey John,

Love The Nines. It touches me in many ways in terms of the business we work in. I work as an LM/Producer/ Hack Writer in Canada (Toronto).

Cheers on the WGA strike. You guys are taking a beating but it is a stand that will not only effect this contract but all the contracts to come.

I was a Local OPSEU President representing Jail Guards and we went on strike twice. The violence was a lot more amped then the “Cadillac Lady” - but in the end we got a bit of what we asked for. Not a great first agreement but enough.

The second time - management caved in earlier than expected and we got a lot more, in many ways - then what we asked for.

The third agreement was a no contest.

The key is to let management know you are serious - despite high paid labor/management attorney council and expertise.

This agreement is about how you guys get you fair share of the profits, on this agreement - and how seriously they will take the WGA in the future.

    Cheers - Quincy

It got the feature picture and blurb in The Boston Globe with a write-up that basically said “rent it!”.

This site is run by screenwriter John August. Mostly, he answers reader-submitted questions about the craft, but occasionally he goes on tangents that run far afield of writing and filmmaking. You'll also find info on past, present and future projects.
