Nope, not my Barbarella

A few readers have written in asking about the announcement by Dino De Laurentiis that he intends to make a new Barbarella. Specifically, will he be using my script?

As far as I can tell, no. The rights to my script are incredibly murky–it was a shared project between Warner Bros. and Fox 2000, based on a different comic book than the one used in the original movie. When the deal fell apart, it became something of an unadoptable orphan. (Back in 2004, I wrote about my long history with the project.)

From all appearances, this new project is starting from scratch. My agent asked around about it, and heard it described as more of a female-oriented Matrix. I’ll be keeping on an eye on it, and if it does make it into production, I’ll feel safer putting my script up in the Downloads section for all to see.

I was wondering, were you ever considered for writing the script for the Sweeney Todd movie? With names like Richard Zanuck, Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter; I immediately thought of your name for the script because of past movies with this ensemble. I was just curious to know your thoughts on the project & such. Enjoy the rest of your day.

I’m posting here because you’ve turned the comments off on the parade section. Devious huh? (Or just plain irritating for others, sorry about that).

But I just don’t get the parade thing. I agree that people are stupid and should be hoisted by their own petards (bless those words we get to use so rarely!) But wouldn’t you be better served by writing and directing a movie about stupid people? Then we can all go watch it and pretend we’re not one of them.

The thing is, its a joy to see a little number appear next to this blog on my RSS feed and in my haste to rush over I’m occasionally disappointed now that its not an article, just a poking of those who so richly deserves it yet still get to vote.

This is my favourite of the four screenwriting blogs that I subscribe to and the most fruitful, but i’d like a little less idiot poking.

    Thankyou pleash.

    Richard (#1):

Sweeney Todd was written by the highly excellent John Logan, so they didn’t me. But I hope to keep writing movies for Tim as long as we’re both in the film business.
