The Nines in Austin

nines posterI’m happy to announce our first expansion outside of New York and Los Angeles: Austin. The Nines will be starting at the Alamo Drafthouse (South Lamar) on September 28th. There’s a Q&A in the works for that weekend with me and Ryan — most likely on the 28th — so be sure to check back for details.

Originally, we were going to open in Austin the same day as NY/LA, but the Venice Film Festival threw a wrench in that. The logistics of getting from LA to Austin to NYC to Venice proved insurmountable, and we didn’t want to open without a Q&A. September feels better, anyway. Classes would have just started on August 31st, and that first week of school is more about mini-fridges and freak-outs than trippy meta-movies.

I’m a frequent panelist at the Austin Film Festival, and Ryan just shot a movie there, so it’ll be good to go back and catch up with friends and colleagues. And the bats.

As previously noted, The Nines opens August 31st in New York and Los Angeles, with a special Q&A at the LA screening on August 31st at 7:30 pm, and an introduction at the 10 pm show. Tickets are on sale now.

I will be there for sure. I resent the mini-fridge comment, but the fact that you’re doing a Q&A makes up for that. A friend of mine that basically looks exactly like Ryan Reynolds just got back from Africa, and I thought that was kinda lolz.

  2. Sarah says:

That sounds cool. I hope The Nines will eventually make it somewhere near me. :)

  3. Hugh says:

Roll on a UK release…. I’m really hoping I’ll be able to see this in a cinema, rather than having to wait for the DVD release….

  4. John August says:

    Hugh (#3):

Optimum bought it for the UK. Keep checking. And once I know the dates, I’ll be sure to post them.

  5. Andrew Paulson says:

I can’t wait until you come to Athens, GA for a Q & A! :) But seriously, how about we split the difference and y’all plug the film in Atlanta. There’s what, 5,000,000+ people there. You post the dates and I’ll be there!

  6. Hugh says:

Fantastic - thanks for letting me know about that!

I’m hoping that it’ll appear at one of the Curzon cinemas in London - they’re a mini-chain that mainly shows more independent, less mainstream films - looking at Optimum’s website, I recognise Golden Door’s poster from the cinema foyer….

Would you be likely to be making any appearances over here with the film, as and when it comes out?

  7. Shavi says:

Why did you cast Ryan Reynolds in this movie John?

I don’t wanna be rude or something but I think Ryan is bad actor - pretty face, hot body, great person but…gawd he has no talent! He is known only for his abs, Van Wilder role, Alanis Morissette and Scarlett Johansson.

But maybe I’m wrong about him.

  8. Matt Hader says:

A great town to show a great film in. Congrats!

  9. Iain Andrew Sclater says:

My friend Chris did the art design for “The Nines” - if that matters to anybody. This website is great - especially for writers like myself.

  10. S. A. Petrich says:

Shavi - watch Smokin’ Aces. It’s not a great film by any means, but Ryan delivers an amazing performance.

  11. Dalibu says:

Yeah, Smokin Aces is an okay film but I would gladly watch it again just for that hospital scene at the end - Ryan is fantastic!

  12. Mike Hughes says:

One-sheets are popping up all over Austin. Saw a bunch on Guadalupe and on Airport Fwy. Look for the nines, indeed.

  13. Luke Mullen says:

John, is there a way for me to buy THE NINES poster right now? I definitely want to get that if I can. Nice timing for the Austin opening, the day after Fantastic Fest ends. I’ll already be in town for that, so I’ll wait until Saturday to fly out so I can catch THE NINES and the Q and A on Friday. Can’t wait to see it!

  14. CC says:

Saw the trailer for The Nines this past weekend before King of Kong at the Drafthouse. It looked great on the big screen.

Will you be showing a digital print or a film print?

  15. John August says:

    CC (#14):

Good question. How is the digital projection at the Drafthouse? If it’s great, we’ll do digital. If not, the 35mm prints are solid.

  16. Shane says:

They showed HDcam stuff at SXSW, and it looked about average.

  17. Dominic says:

I’m going to Austin for the film festival this year but don’t get there until October 9. Here’s hoping it’s still running at the Alamo then. Otherwise I might have to wait for it to hit Australia.

  18. CC says:

I agree with Shane, the digital projection at the Drafthouse is okay. I’ve definitely seen better.

  19. Val says:

I’m really excited about the premiere here in Austin, its too bad we will have to wait a little while longer but I’m sure it will be completely worth it with the Q&A, I will definitely be there!

  20. Amanda says:

Does anyone know how I can get tickets to ‘The Nines’ premiere in Austin. I’m a communications student here at UT and would love to go, but the links don’t allow me to purchase tickets, or even see if any are available(?) Thanks!

  21. Donald Elliott says:

I live in Houston, TX, but this is a great opportunity to meet the man with the website that gives all of us hope and inspiration that the grass on the other side is somewhat greener. What am I saying, everyone knows the grass is a faint shade of gray.
