Prepping for the Directors Close-Up panels

Tonight and next Wednesday, I’ll be hosting the Directors Close-Up panels for Film Independent.

Tonight’s director is Jason Reitman, joined by cinematographer Eric Steelberg, editor Dana E. Glauberman and composer Rolfe Kent. We’ll be talking about Up In The Air, Juno and Thank You For Smoking.

Next Wednesday’s director guest will be announced tonight. We’ll be talking about casting and working with actors.

Word from the organizers is that it’s almost sold out, but “a limited number of passes” will still be available at the door if you want to try. It’s at the Landmark Theaters in West LA, beginning at 7:30pm.

Film Independent is recording these panels, so if you’re living outside Los Angeles, don’t despair: I’ll pass along the info when I have it. In preparation for the series, they shot a bunch of short interview pieces with me, which you can see up on YouTube.

The Twitter hashtag for the series is #DCU2010. If you have questions for anyone on the panel tonight, tweet it (@johnaugust) and I’ll try to ask.

    You’re welcome.

Did I miss something? Why are people posting links to cowboy hats?

I understand this was about directing, but did the “Reitman – Turner” screenwriting credit debacle, concerning “Up in the Air”, raise its head?

    John,

The directors close up last night was very insightful. Great job of hosting and see you next week.

Reitman and Turner. I hate reading about this stuff. Reitman acts like a spoiled brat…

Panel sounds awesome, be sure to post vid link!

    @Toli

That’s why I’m trying to get an answer on whether “Reitman – Turner” was brought up.

It’s obviously not just the problem of two writers, Reitman claims he never saw Turner’s draft. If that is truly the case, some of the blame has to go the execs, WGA, or some other irresponsible party.

I hope Reitman didn’t lie again about how his father didn’t give him access to becoming a director, ’cause I’m not buying it. He should just thank his lucky stars and let his movies speak for him. Which are are all quite awesome in my opinion.

Will you have a video of the event?

  11. Brian Burke

I find it incredible that I can’t get an answer. Apparently people can acknowledge being at the event, but are seemingly oblivious to a battle concerning the screenwriting credit?

All I’m asking is whether Reitman addressed the issue or not.

  12. Paula

    Hi Brian,

    It didn’t come up.

  13. Brian Burke

    Thank you, Paula.

So, that was pretty cool. & I got a few legit questions answered tonight. :) John you didn’t have time for the obligatory, “nice job at the grill” conversation, but its true… most people wouldn’t have had the insight necessary. Very cool.

One of the best things to come out of the panel was finding out about your website. What a cool site for filmmakers. Got a lot out of both DCU thus far. Good job steering the conversation and keepint it flowing.
