I got married

On Saturday evening, one hundred friends and family members got together for our wedding at a house in the hills. There were rings and toasts and food and cake. It’s all a bit of a blur. The photos I’ve seen so far have me grinning idiotically, which I’m sure I was.

We had guests come from as far away as Brazil and as far back as Webelos. Weddings and funerals seem to be the only ways to assemble large swaths of people from across one’s life. And only in the former do you get to catch up. That was a great part of the weekend.

At a cocktail party on Friday night, I described the feeling that the universe had forked, and that luckily we’d ended up in the version in which marriage is legal and good people win elections. Here’s hoping my theory is proved correct.

You’ll likely see photos from the wedding in (ironically enough) bridal magazines. And you’ll see my name and face in the press as we get closer to the November election, in an effort to defeat a constitutional amendment which would make Saturday’s festivities impossible.

But for now, I’m just trying to get used to the ring on my finger. And saying husband.

  12. Earl Newton says:

Congratulations a thousand times, John! You’ve earned this far more than a lot of the straight couples who use marriage as a crutch to keep their relationship going. In this case, marriage wasn’t the creation of a union, but the symbol of a union already formed.

And thank God. I think we just moved a step closer to the 21st century.

  57. Mark says:

I got married a week and a half ago, and have been trying to get used to saying “husband.” It’s strange, but it’s so much clearer than “partner,” or “boyfriend,” that I don’t think it will take too long to get used to it. I’ve never worn a ring before now, and I think that’s going to take much more time before it stops feeling strange.

Congratulations! Do you feel like a pioneer?

  58. Shripriya says:

  79. JM says:

I just saw a great doc at the USC-CUC Global Exchange tonight, following the paths of several gay individuals and also a couple that was finally able to get married, and the partner from China spoke of how amazing it was to see how homosexuals are free to be themselves and so respected. It moved him to know that somewhere in this world, he could be himself.

It was really moving to see that, the earnest hope…but at the same time, it made me bitter, because it’s ridiculous that it’s just getting started…and there’s still so much resistance.

My most jubilant and sincere congratulations to you and your husband, John.

Oh…I’ve sent way too many grown ass friends of mine to play Puzzle Farter, and I myself beat it yesterday. I expected far more farting and fanfare upon completion, and I swear, that’s not the studio talking.

    ;-)
