Corpse Bride trailer up

Corpse BrideThe trailer for Corpse Bride is now up at Apple. Before you ask, I don’t know if this is a teaser or the final trailer. It does a good job setting up what the movie is about, so I’m not sure they’ll need to cut a longer version.

Corpse Bride is the second animated movie I’ve worked on, the first being Titan A.E.. Unlike Titan, which was a combination of traditional and computer animation, Corpse Bride was done with stop-motion animation like Tim Burton’s earlier The Nightmare Before Christmas. The artistry behind the animation is painstaking — each frame you shoot is pretty much the way it’s going to be in the final film.

From a writer’s perspective, there’s not a lot of difference between writing for animation and writing a normal live-action movie. Where you feel the difference is in production and post. In “normal” movies, it’s not too hard to re-arrange a scene, or change a line of dialogue in editing. With this technique, there’s less wiggle room. Once the shutter clicks, you’re pretty much locked. In some ways, that’s liberating. It means there’s a lot more attention to the details from the outset.

The movie comes out at Halloween in the States. (I’m not sure about the rest of the world.)

Cool trailer (or teaser). Out of curiousity, what was your role on Corpse Bride? It doesn’t seem to be listed under your IMDB entry. You seem to be doing quite a bit or work with Tim Burton recently (but then so does Johnny Depp)…

  2. Rob Workman says:

Tim Burton seems to be doing a lot of work himself recently. He’s becoming almost a regular as Spielberg. Or maybe I haven’t paid that much attention to him until recently. Seemed he used to go 3-4 years between films but now is on ex-lax or something.

  3. John says:

    Troy,

I was the last of several writers on the project. A lot of what I did was dialogue, but there’s also one or two songs for which I did the lyrics. IMDb isn’t especially accurate on writing credits until the movie comes out.

  4. Americo says:

Hey John, you brought up Titan A.E. It was one of my favorite flicks that I felt was completely unappreciated when it came out. What kind of relationship did you have, if any at all, working with Joss Whedon and Ben Edlund, both writers that I truly respect (you’re of course right up there :) ). How is it like collaborating with with two other guys?

  5. John says:

    Americo,

Joss Whedon, Ben Edlund and I all worked at different times, so we never got to know each other. (In fact, I’ve still never met either of them.) I don’t know if Edlund started working with Whedon based on Titan, or if that was just a coincidence. I’m sure some Mutant Enemy thread would tell you.

  6. Americo says:

How’s that like, as far as you as a writer; not even meeting the guys that your name is next to on something you helped create? I know every time I write, I have a strong connection to the material, and I’m very picky on what the end result is. Does that connection get pacified by the paycheck?

  7. Richard says:

So, will you get credit for Corpse Bride? When you are the last of many writers on a certain project or a Script Doctor, what is the most that you can contribute. New scenes?

  8. John says:

I’ll probably end up getting shared credit on CB. There’s still a while before they figure that out.

As far as Americo’s concern, keep in mind that on Titan AE, all three of us (Whedon, Edlund and myself) were working months and even years apart, and the underlying story wasn’t any of ours. Rewriting a studio project is sort of like being a nanny: you genuinely care about it, but you recognize it isn’t really yours.

  9. Richard says:

I would freak out if I was on a rewrite job for a studio and I could only find a handful of little things to change. Freak out that the studio would say, “What are we paying you for?”

But I guess you can always find something wrong film a film or screenplay. That’s what critics are for!

  10. Hugh Macdonald says:
