Backpacking through Africa

April 16, 2010 Africa, Random Advice

questionmarkMy wife and I are about to embark on a year-long backpacking trip around the world. If time and money allow, we’d love to explore parts of Africa. Unfortunately, mostly due to our own ignorance, we’re trying to overcome a healthy dose of fear and trepidation.

You’ve been to some parts of Africa, haven’t you? Is there anywhere you’d suggest that’s easy and safe for independent tourists?

-A.

random adviceI’ve only been to South Africa and Malawi.

The South African leg of the trip was a safari. It was incredible, but it’s very much a tourist thing. It should be part of your visit to the continent, but it wouldn’t be reflective of most of your time in Africa.

In Malawi, I was working with a charity called [FOMO](http://www.fomo.co.uk), which serves 5,000 orphans in one of the poorest places on Earth. It was probably the most intense experience of my life. I’ve written about it a [few](http://johnaugust.com/archives/2007/home-from-africa) [times](http://www.advocate.com/Arts_and_Entertainment/People/Out_of_Africa/), but 30 seconds can give you some taste of it:

I wasn’t backpacking, but I met Americans and Europeans who were. Track down some books and blogs and follow their advice on where to go and what to avoid. Nothing is “easy,” but much of it is very safe.

A few hints I can offer:

* Read up, but try not to form expectations. Let it be what it is.
* Start getting your shots early. Many of them need weeks to take effect.
* Everyone has different experiences with anti-malaria medication. Most visitors take it, most natives don’t. You’ll be okay either way.
* Bring a first aid kit. It can be hard to find a Band-Aid, much less 911.
* A small inflatable globe can help show where you’re from.
* If your cell phone works in Europe, it will work most places in Africa.
* Hooking up with a charity (like FOMO) is a good way to meet people beyond normal tourist avenues.

Most importantly, don’t let fear of the unknown stop you from visiting. It’s not Mars. A billion people live there, and you owe it to yourself to see what it’s like.

Making and releasing the micro-budget indie

March 19, 2010 Follow Up, Indie

Several readers who couldn’t make it to the [One Too Many Mornings screening](http://johnaugust.com/archives/2010/one-too-many-mornings-screening) on Tuesday night asked whether there might be video from the Q&A I hosted afterwards. Thanks to the OTMM crew, there is:

* [Part One (8:45)](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2SFKb9_EgU&feature=channel) talks about the genesis of the movie, from script through Sundance.

* [Part Two (9:57)](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-nuiJj5tdo&feature=channel) looks at how they’re trying to get the movie out in the world, from direct downloads to DVDs to college screenings around the country.

Although the discussion in general will make sense to anyone interested in making indies, some of the specific details on OTMM will make more sense if you watch the movie.

In the rooftop party after the screening, several people asked about my interest in tiny movies — most of the projects I work on have a lot more commas and zeros in the price tag. To me, it’s an experiment in disintermediation, just like [The Variant](http://johnaugust.com/variant) was.

What happens when you take out the typical distributor? What do you gain? What do you lose?

I’m toying with the idea of doing [The Remnants](http://johnaugust.com/archives/2009/the-remnants-in-full) as an itty-bitty feature, but would only do it if I could get it out in the world in a way that made sense creatively and financially. So I’m watching things like OTMM closely. I’m happy to be a trailblazer, but would love to know what cliffs and monsters lie along that path.

Upon further reflection, it’s a bit overused

From [FourFour](http://fourfour.typepad.com/), home of earlier [No Signal supercut](http://johnaugust.com/archives/2009/no-signal), comes another montage of movie tropes, this one involving [medicine cabinet mirrors](http://fourfour.typepad.com/fourfour/2010/02/mirror-scare-a-supercut.html) and their kin.

Prepping for the Directors Close-Up panels

February 3, 2010 Directors, Indie, Los Angeles

Tonight and next Wednesday, I’ll be hosting the [Directors Close-Up](http://filmindependent.org/content/directors-closeup) panels for Film Independent.

Tonight’s director is Jason Reitman, joined by cinematographer Eric Steelberg, editor Dana E. Glauberman and composer Rolfe Kent. We’ll be talking about Up In The Air, Juno and Thank You For Smoking.

Next Wednesday’s director guest will be announced tonight. We’ll be talking about casting and working with actors.

Word from the organizers is that it’s almost sold out, but “a limited number of passes” will still be available at the door if you want to try. It’s at the Landmark Theater in West LA, beginning at 7:30pm.

Film Independent is recording these panels, so if you’re living outside Los Angeles, don’t despair: I’ll pass along the info when I have it. In preparation for the series, they shot a bunch of short interview pieces with me, which you can see [up on YouTube](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7a0zVJxaiPY).

The Twitter hashtag for the series is #DCU2010. If you have questions for anyone on the panel tonight, tweet it ([@johnaugust](http://twitter.com/johnaugust)) and I’ll try to ask.
