Syd Field is a screenwriter best known for his fundamental books Screenplay-The Foundations of Screenwriting, and The Screenwriter’s Workbook which are regarded as basic texts for professional screenwriters.

Field was revolutionary for analyzing the proportion of screenplays, and describing the structure that he found in scripts that worked well. Until he wrote Screenplay, most writers were basing their structural craft solely on Aristotle.

In his first two books, Field laid the groundwork for nearly all screenplay structure theories to follow. He defined the Four Act Structure which treats the doubly-long Act II as two separate Acts.
