margins

standard settings for screenplay elements to be printed on the page. Originated as margin settings on manual typewriters. A fundamental rule for screenwriters is to make sure that their script looks like a professional script, and proper margins are the first step to that goal.

There is no industry standard for these settings, but there are several standards which fall within acceptable guidelines. The most popular are:

Cole and Haag margins from the formatting guide used by studios for many years;

Warner Bros margins from the Warner script department, which retypes all purchased scripts for standardization;

Final Draft margins based on the default setting of the script processing software;

Screenwriter default margins based on Movie Magic Screenwriter.
