Frequently Asked Questions

What is jaWiki?

jaWiki is a the wiki section of johnaugust.com, offering expanded and editable information about screenwriting. It was launched in November 2006, and is currently in beta. It might completely self-destruct up without warning.

What is the point?

jaWiki is meant to be a reference and a resource, answering common (and less common) questions about the art, craft and profession of screenwriting. Although jaWiki relies on reader input, it should not be confused with a discussion forum. It’s a place to share information, as opposed to opinions.

How is it different from the main site?

Unlike the main site, which operates in a top-down, blog-like fashion (John writes, others comment), most of the articles in jaWiki are created and edited by the readers. Readers like you. Every article is editable, and readers are encouraged to expand and improve wherever they can.

I see a mistake. How do I fix it?

The bottom of (almost) every page has an “Edit this page” button, allowing readers to expand, clarify or correct the information on the page. In addition, some pages (like this one) have additional edit buttons to allow work on specific sections.

Don't I need permission?

No, you don’t. Any reader is welcome to edit or create an article. Only certain back-office tasks are reserved for administrators.

How do I format an article?

First, check the jaWiki style guide. Then look at the syntax page. To get some practice, try the Playground.

Do I need to log in?

You don’t have to, but it’s a good idea. When you create a user name and log in with it, any changes you make carry your name with it. That way, other users can see what you’ve contributed.
