Variant cover artwork

Since you released “The Variant” independently, how’d you get the nifty cover art?

The image comes from stock.xchng, a photo by Marja Flick-Buijs of the Netherlands. I did the type myself. The face is Myriad.
Because Amazon scales the artwork incredibly small for some views, I fattened the type used on the Kindle version so that it would remain legible.

Is it a good idea to use a stock image for a book cover? What if it starts turning up in doublemint gum commercials or something more insidious?

stock.xchng is an awesome site. Been using their stuff to illustrate reasons to be happy on http://www.tweetedblessings.com.

How are you marketing your work outside of the site or have you covered this already?

Neat cover. Simplistic with a bit of irony to it.

I’m unfamiliar with stock.xchng, however, another source for great and useful images is flickr. You can use its advanced search to find creative commons licensed photos. Almost every search will result in a handful of exceptional photos.
