The Nines on SciFi

The Nines will be airing on Britain’s SciFi channel several times this month — not to be confused with the U.S. SyFy channel, or the other international outlets with similar names.

AMC has the basic cable rights to The Nines for the U.S., but (as far as I know) hasn’t yet aired it. Ryan Reynolds has become a bigger star in the past year, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it works its way into rotation at some point.

A few months ago, I had to oversee a special TV-safe cut of the movie, which replaced the most egregious swearing and excised about three seconds of masturbation. I don’t know which version will be showing in the U.K.

    Congrats, John!

Also, this… “excised about three seconds of masturbation…” has to be the funniest thing I’ve read all week. Sounds painful, too.

Should of known it would be SyFy; your movie doesn’t have nearly enough badly done cgi monsters to get on that channel. They don’t just let anyone in.

  3. Kareem

    I meant wouldn’t.

Enough electronic ink has been spilled on SciFi/SyFy/whatever USA calls it next year. Suffice to say they never have gotten back in the science fiction groove IF they were ever in it.

When it shows up here I’ll catch it just for Ryan Reynolds.

Okay, to see how you did on it as well.

I’m curious if you did any alternate, non-expletive versions of dialog on set in anticipation of the potential broadcast cut or was it accomplished through editing and looping? Did you have to do a pan & scan version as well?

In the UK if it’s on after 9pm on any channel we don’t bother cutting stuff out. And if it does have adult themes then most TV stations don’t bother putting a film on before 9pm. Though raelly adult themes may be aired after 11pm, like use of the c-word, or lots of nudity. Also most will show it in the original aspect ratio.

    @Ruckus:

We did cover lines for Parts 1 and 3 during looping. Part 2 is supposed to be a reality TV show, so we bleeped it.

Don’t know about pan-and-scan. If they did one, I didn’t oversee it.

You might already know this, but it is airing on Movie Extra, a pay TV channel in Australia. I actually recorded it and will watch it this weekend.

Hey, John. I actually watched The Nines for the first time the night before last. Got it on DVD for my bday over the weekend. I really enjoyed it, and Ryan did an amazing job. And I kept looking at the different parts of the house wondering which bits were yours. :-p

Nice work! It’s nice to see how universal science fiction as a genre is–any country can enjoy quality programming from over here.

    Comedies…well, that’s another story.

How do you feel about censoring your own work? A necessary evil of the job, no skin off your back, or some sort of in-between?

You see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

“I don’t know which version will be showing in the U.K.”

Oddly enough, it’ll just be egregious swearing and three seconds of masturbation.

Just noticed that it’s on Netflix Instant–yay for me! I know what I’ll be doing tonight.
