Kindle, international edition

kindleWhen I published The Variant on Kindle, I knew I’d be leaving out most of the world, since the Kindle was U.S. only. No longer.

Amazon announced today the international version of the Kindle, which lets users in 100+ countries buy content through its Kindle store. It ships October 19th.

Except Canada. :( It’s a nice step forward for books.

    That’s a good news.

    shipping to France…

I may think about becoming a Kindle addict then!

    Thanks for the tip John.

When it comes to music, we have always had to buy equipment to listen to it (or ticket for a concert).

But books works as they are. You pay for the book and you can read it. You buy a CD and need something to play it on to listen to it.

Why should I buy equipment to read a book? I can think of some, so I AM a potential customer.

But, considering what happened to music business when you could copy without loss of quality, why would the book business risk the same?

And now they’ve announced the DX is going global as well.

I wonder whey they didn’t announce both Kindle’s were going international at the same time?

I’m guessing they must have had so many pre-orders they saw dollar signs and the execs said let’s do it with the DX as well. I’m not sure it will do as well as the Kindle 2 though. Time will tell.

The permanence of e-books has never really appealed to me. I like being able to donate/trade/sell my books. If there was a website that was like a ‘used’ digital book store, where you could trade/sell e-books, I may consider a Kindle. Until then, I prefer to buy from used bookstores. I haven’t paid retail price for a book in over 10 years. :)

i enjoy reading the blog, but that felt a little like an advertisement. which, considering you don’t even do the ads on the side or anything, is perfectly fine.

however, i guess that after hearing all the news about blogs and how they have to reveal how much they are paid to deal with/review products (i’m not exactly informed on the issue) it automatically put me on my guard.

just thought i’d throw that out there…

Great news, I’ll be grabbing one in Berlin!

Still I hate that they aren’t in Canada yet, no doubt due to the horrible 3G monopoly that Rogers has.

    Sigh, no New Zealand either.

I don’t want to turn the comments into a discussion about Kindle vs. Book but I do find the name “Kindle” ridiculously ironic.

Will we see translations of “The Variant” now that the Kindle’s out in so many countries?

Not to rehash this debate, but I’m from Canada and I finally got to see one of these things when I crossed the border last week. It looks horrible. Does anyone really enjoy reading on the Kindle, or is it just that much more convenient?

Instead of the Kindle, they could’ve called it “the 451″. Or… maybe not :)

I met yesterday at the conference, you were amazing on stage.

I won’t get a Kindle until something is done about Amazon’s ability to remotely delete books.
