I’d like to thank the Academy

I’ve been invited to join. Many thanks to the folks who nominated me, and the committee who selected me.

Again: Really sorry about Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.

  3. Manny

ok, let me rephrase that, let me be ‘the’ first to congratulate you.

  4. Joel

    Congratulations!

  5. Bryan Young

    Congratulations, sir.

  6. Tim W.

Congratulations, although I was surprised that you already weren’t a member. Looking at the list, though, I was surprised by a few who were not.

Just out of interest, how exactly does it work? Who nominates you?

  7. Lisa

Woo hoo! Welcome the end of year landslide of dvds in cumbersome packages from studios!!

    Congrats!!

  8. Richard

    Congrats

and I love the last line

  9. Jonathan K

Congratulations, John! And just so you know, one of my good friends, another screenwriter, LOVES Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.

  10. Racicot

    Congrats John.

  11. Kristan

    LOL! Congrats! How cool.

  12. Nima

    CONGRATS!

You should go to the reception high school graduation style. That is to say, dressed in an awesome, but classy, penis costume.

  13. Stephan Vladimir Bugaj

    Congratulations! That is awesome.

  14. RealLowVibe

That’s fantastic news, John. Warmest congratulations!

  15. Jon

    I forgive you :)

  16. Chris Michael

    Congrats!

  17. Robert D

That’s fantastic! Enjoy, you’ve contributed more than enough to offset Full Throttle. Maybe with this website alone.

And, just in time to weigh in on this whole “10-best picture noms” thing. Your thoughts?

Congrats! Enjoy the free screenings on Saturdays!

  19. Anonymous

    Congratulations! It’s been long overdue!

  20. Erik Harrison

My ex loves Full Throttle. And you only have to apologize when kissing ass to get in in the first place. Now that you’re in, you can start name dropping and acting aloof.

  21. Cat

Congrats! And it’s okay, we understand: we all have things we’ve created that…fall short of the apex of art.

  22. JIm

Congratulations – surprised that you weren’t already a member, but glad that you’re in now. Choose wisely!

  23. Kurt

Why so few writers when all those other jobs wouldn’t exist without them?

  24. Scott

Congrats, to those of us outside Hollywood, what are the benefits and responsibilities of membership in the Academy? Aside from voting in the Oscars….Does this mean different opportunities with newly aquired status?

  25. Lead_Solo

    NIcely done. Perfect apology!

  26. Chris

Wow. They’re letting anyone in these days. Academy isn’t what it used to be.

Doesn’t continually recognizing the, um… quality of Charlie’s Angels 2 burn some bridges or piss off the wrong people? Or is everyone in agreement over it?

Oh, and congratulations. Vote for Up!

  27. Dave Kittredge

    Just saw this in Indiewire.

    Many many congrats!

  28. Shripriya

Congratulations. Besides your obvious contributions that they consider, you do more than most for the unknowns in the community though this blog. Thank you.

  29. Andreas Climent

    Congrats John, well deserved!

  30. Hector

Congrats John! Took them long enough!!

  31. RTA

Very nice. Continue to fight the good fight! -RTA

  32. Keith G

Congrats. And what do you think about the Academy deciding on Ten Best Picture nominees? Or as a member of the Academy, will you stay out of this now?

  33. alfred

FULL THROTTLE WAS NOT A BAD MOVIE.

  34. gilliebean

    Awesome.

  35. Tyson K.

Congratulations! Does this mean you can run long?

  36. Johnny Hartmann

Congrats!! Wait, what you get…free screeners? bragging rights? anything?

  37. Nick

Meh. The blame for Full Throttle lies with McG. Dude went WAY too highbrow with it.

  38. Monica Solon

Congratulations, well deserved indeed! My faith in the Academy has just improved. :-) Shripriya, I couldn’t agree more. Thank you, John.

  39. Justin

    Congratulations, John. That’s great news!

  40. Satria

Congratulations! Well deserved!Go, the first Angels, Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and this brilliant website easily outweigh the wibberly abomination that was Full Throttle.

  41. Lila

Congratulations! That is fantastic news =)

  42. Robert LaRue

Congratulations John! One of only four writers this year! Wonderful.

  43. lightly speaking

    Congrats!

Interesting only 4 writers invited, while 8 PR professionals were. Maybe I’m a little sensitive because IMDB just demoted screenwriters off the main page for all movies. The entire cast is still on the main part, but screenwriter credit is at bottom of the page.

    See http://tinyurl.com/ly7jka

  44. Spoon

Apologize? That was one of your few interesting movies.

  45. Paul R.

Congrats! And, don’t apologize for Full Throttle. It was fun. And, sometimes fun is totally warranted.

  46. ap

    Off-topic:

Has anyone else noticed that IMDb has shifted the name of the writer from the top of the title (originally just under Director) to the “Additional Details” section (which is under the entire cast)? Example here (using a recently-discussed movie): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1041829/

    Thoughts?

  47. ap

And now I see that Lightly Speaking beat me to it. Well done, sir.

  48. Stel Pavlou

Congrats John. Am very happy for you.

Am also wildy angry about the IMDB thing. Blogging about it too.

You have a bigger voice than most of us. What’s your take?

  49. Ethan

Figures that they’d invite so few writers and put them at the bottom of the page listing all the names. It’s a disgrace and an insult to us writers.

  50. ap

…And now they’ve changed it back.

  51. Kade Robinson

Congratulations John! Really well deserved. As others have said above, this blog alone warrants admission!

Aside from the obvious (Academy voting), can you elaborate a little on the duties of an academy member? How do you think it will change your life, professionally speaking? What new benefits come along with it?

Also, I’m sure a lot of people on here would be curious as to how it all unfolded. Did you answer the door to find a hired goon nursing a golden scroll or did you just read it in the trades with everyone else?

    Congrats again.

    Regards,

    Kade Robinson

  52. Nik

    Congrats, John! You deserve it.

  53. Blitzen

Now you get to be thanked in EVERY accepting speech. You’re gonna be a great guy.

  54. Aadip

    Well-deserved, John. Congrats.

  55. martin

Congratulations. Coincidentally, Brent White, a great pro and a friend, was also invited. On another note, Lorenzo Semple- an otherwise engaging guy, whose fantastic wit is now on full cyberspace display -got to run the Academy when he had brought the sixties Batman and the King Kong remake upon the world. In other words, I wouldn’t fret too much about Full Throttle.

  56. Einar Árnason

I had fun when I went to see Full Throttle.

  57. Désirée

    Congratulations!

  58. mara

    Congrats!

And quit apologizing for Full Throttle. As a full-time musician, I spend most of my time playing things I’d rather not play:

-weddings (“I’d like this really special song, do you know it? Pachelbel’s Canon?”) -church services (I’m pretty much a heathen) -Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (AAARGHH!!) -terrible arrangments of good songs (“Fascinatin’ Rhythm,” stripped of its fascinatin’ rhythm)

You’re a working artist. Most of the time you have to go with what others want, and sometimes you get to do what you want. Which is much more than most people get from their (paying) work.

Besides, obviously some people liked Full Throttle. That counts for something!

  59. martinb

Congratulations. This should cut your DVD bill in half.

  60. Craig

Most of us would poison your favorite drink to be in your shoes.

  61. Travis Fields

    Hey, Kudos John!
