Go on Blu-ray

go blu-rayMy first movie, Go, will finally be coming out on Blu-ray on August 18th. Amazon has it available for pre-order at $19.99.

It’s the 10th anniversary, but it’s not a special looking-back-at edition. I had a few conversations with the Sony folks about the possibilities — the movie was a turning point for nearly everyone involved — but ultimately nothing got approved. The special features sound like the same ones on the DVD.

Regardless, I’m happy to see it in the new format. According to the release, it will be 2.40:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Is there a party? You should throw a party… an INTERNET party. I don’t really know what that means, but I imagine it involves a web cam, a video retrospective of the film, guest appearances (Ze Frank?), and party hats.

Awesome. Go is one of the movies I’ve watched the most times. It’s strange really, but I can always watch it and feel cooler afterwards.

I should go watch the dvd again.

Did they fix the subtitles with this version? The last edition required you to turn “on” the English subtitles in order to read the cat’s dialogue during Mannie’s big trip. Those subtitles should be burned-in.

Maybe you could record your own podcast commentary that people could download and play along with the film?

Congrats. That was a really fun, great movie. The bit about Family Circus still cracks me up to this day.

Yes, would love a screenwriting focused podcast commentary for this. You do that, I’ll buy a blu-ray copy!

Congratulations! One of my favorite films. (And learned a lot reading your spec and shooting scripts from your site.) Definitely looking forward to getting it and watching it in HD.

Ah…I well remember importing the Region 1 DVD Go ten years ago – it had a somewhat limited release in the UK and I was desperate to see it. Come to think of it, it must have been in the first 20 or so DVDs of a collection now around 600.

I also remember it well for being the first DVD to ask me a completely redundant and stupid question upon pressing play – “Which version would you like to watch? Fullscreen or Widescreen?” Well, gee, let me ponder that on that one…

For that reason (that being compressing the film down so as to fit two versions on the same disc) and the reason that I love the film dearly for so many other things, this is a must-buy for me on blu-ray.

It’s great to see that the codec is AVC.

Do you know who decides which codecs (video and audio) get used for Blu-ray releases?

I know that lots of the detritus that was HD-DVD just got their inferior masters copied over to Blu-ray and re-released, but besides those, there are still companies that use VC-1 (which is really just Microsoft’s Windows Media 9) while most companies use the far more advanced AVC (which most people know as h.264, the most popular type of MPEG-4).

    Just wondering.
