USC at Sundance/Slamdance

A reminder for USC alums with movies playing at this year’s festivals: make sure the school knows so they can invite you to events: alumni@cinema.usc.edu.

Also, feel free to hype it in this thread.

I’m rather new to the movie game. I’ve been to the websites to check out these festivals and how to enter. However, I still don’t know the difference between the two. Is there a difference between Sundance and Slamdance? Or am I looking for something that isn’t there? Thanks!

Slamdance sounds like the sort of place that would leave you vulnerable to being “served.”

Sundance is the big festival that Robert Redford runs where films receive a great deal of hype and (at least used to) get bought. You won’t get into that one. Not unless you’re John Krasinski (or John August).

Slamdance is the little festival that happens in the same town at the same time. They have one table. You probably won’t get into that one, either.

It’s for the best, though: food and lodging are at a premium in Park City during the festival(s).

I just found out an editor friend of mine got a project he worked on into Slamdance, and he’ll be going. Very exciting, I can’t wait to hear his stories.

About

This site is run by screenwriter John August. Mostly, he answers reader-submitted questions about the craft, but occasionally he goes on tangents that run far afield of writing and filmmaking. You'll also find info on past, present and future projects.
