Go on Hulu
Online video service Hulu is now featuring my first movie, Go. If you haven’t seen it — and you live in U.S., and you’re over 17 — it’s worth a look. It even has a great, minimalist URL:
I really doubted Hulu when it was first announced, because everything the studios touch tends to be needlessly complicated and crappy. But Hulu works great for catching up on old TV shows, and now movies. The advertising isn’t terribly intrusive, either.
Will I get residuals? We’ll see. But considering Go is easily available in hundreds of illegal sites online, I’m just happy to find it in a clean, well-lighted place with 480p resolution.

These services are surprisingly well-done.
I’m hoping that eventually the Roku Netflix player (or X-Box 360, and so on) will upgrade its software so that I can stream directly to the TV. Given that it’s just a software front end I’d think that it wouldn’t be too hard.

AWESOME!! Gonna go watch it while I eat my lunch (I’m an unbelievably slow eater).

too bad I live outside USA.

Oh man, what a time to live outside the US. I really liked Go when it came out, would love to see it again.

Mr. Fink,
You can still buy or rent the DVD. I’m just sayin…

Hulu is great, I just hope they continue the good practices that make it worth using.
@ Steve Peterson: There’s some software that let’s you stream Hulu to your TV your PS3/Xbox called PlayOn, works like a charm. You even get less commercials using it for some reason.

Hulu rules. We get all of the newest shows on there. Plus, it’s great for catching shows that I didn’t know were on the air anymore (maybe only online?) like Scare Tactics, hosted by Tracy Morgan. Hilarious!

Now if only apple would negotiate to make their appleTV compatible with streaming from hulu, netflix, and others.
The online streaming things are cool, but I will rarely watch away from my TV.

@Mike Try Boxee.net and ATVUsbCreator for watching all sorts of streaming media via Apple TV. I watch Hulu via Apple TV all the time. Not to mention that the newest firmware update for PS3’s allows full screen playback of Hulu content….
And Hulu is working on some big secret (probably software integration into a device like a PS3). At least, that’s what my friends at Hulu say.

You want us to sell Amway?
December 15th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
@mike:
You need something called Boxee. Do a Google search.

I actually do feel that Hulu is needlessly complicated, purely from a layout perspective. Hulu feels like it’s nice and clean till you’re watching a flick or episode, and the page layout tries to tug your eyes away from what you’re watching. And the search is terrible.
Of course, that these two trivially fixable problems are all that’s wrong with Hulu goes to show how good it is.

Hulu watched through the Playstation 3 on my living room television is a glimpse of the future.

It’s not Amway… it’s confederated products. Brilliant! Damn John – my brother and I quote that anytime out of the blue, since we watched it way back when.

Will Hulu work someday outide US?!

I’m pretty disappointed with Hulu and NBC.com – a week or so ago they announced they weren’t getting near the kind of viewers they were aiming for, but at the same time I noticed that being in canada meant I could no longer watch any video on nbc.com
I guess NBC doesn’t want any of the clicks and ad revenue I bring if I miss an episode or something. They’d rather canadians torrent it? I don’t understand. It seems like a poor business model to cut off potential viewers.
But more related – nice to see this, John :)

There’s commercial breaks?
A commenter posted this…”Was there a mistake after the 3rd commercial break, or does the scene with the British guy asking Ronna to cover his shift actually repeat? Never saw it in the theatre so I don’t …”
Never used Hulu, so I’m curious.

Omigosh, I love this movie! I’m so glad it’s available online now. :)
December 16th, 2008 at 10:31 am
Oh, but I’m with other peeps who wish Hulu was international!
December 16th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
Marc,
It’s actually not NBC’s fault that you can’t view their videos in Canada. NBC (and every other American network) programs are simulcast in Canada. American networks are not allowed to show their programs to Canadian viewers if it means bypassing Canadian networks. It’s also why major cable network programs are not on iTunes. These programs would have to be distributed by a Canadian network, and until they work out a financial arrangement, we’ll never see them on iTunes.
This also means Hulu will probably never be international because there are too many laws in too many countries and hulu.com, the networks and distributors would have to work out separate deals with every single country. Not very likely.

To watch Hulu outside the U.S, use Hotspot Shield.

Here’s a guide from techcrunch on accessing Hulu from outside the us if anyone’s interested http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/01/06/accessing-hulu-pandora-and-other-sites-from-outside-of-the-united-states/

you wrote GO? AWESOME movie and great script. Great work!
December 17th, 2008 at 10:45 am
Hulu has been a great one-stop-spot to watch every episode of Arreested Development. There is usually only 2 10-second commercial breaks per episode and the site is completely devoid of pop-ups. Never have I had an issue with other stuff on the screen diverting my attention. As opposed to G4, which also shows AD, but fills 2/3rds of your screen with stupid, completely annoying ads and sounds and bleeps.
Hulu is a fine spot for GO–So if you haven’t seen it, can’t afford to buy it, don’t seem to have a netflix account or live near a video store, watch it on hulu.com…You will have enjoyed a fine bit of entertainment and it’ll be over before you knew what hit ya. (Fichtner is a personal fav of mine in this movie :)

Tim – thanks for the clarification. It’s still pretty frustrating but I guess it’s a lot of red tape to cut though.
sigh I suppose I should join the 21st century and get a Tivo already ;)

Go was the first movie I ever snuck into. I remember having no idea what ecstasy was.
