This site is run by screenwriter John August. Mostly, he answers reader-submitted questions about the craft, but occasionally he goes on tangents that run far afield of writing and filmmaking. You'll also find info on past, present and future projects.
For photos, blurbs and uncomfortable self-promotion, you can check out his Facebook fan page.
If you have a question about screenwriting or my movies that hasn't been answered, by all means ask. There are a few guidelines to follow.
There are more than 900 articles on the site. You can find category archives at the bottom of every page.

Nice! Spray paint the streets of Park City with “circle nine” to promote your screenings!

Are you sure it’s not an upside-down B, promoting the new Jerry Seinfeld animated film?
Nice new site, by the way.

This has to be my favorite photo of the lot… though, I’m curious to know what you were actually discussing with her.

Wait a minute. Is this a kind of “Drowning By Numbers” thing? Am I going to have to watch the movie twenty or thirty times to see all the numbers?

There seems to be a small obsession with films & t.v shows about intertwining stories & the connections between strangers. I too have jumped on this bandwagon, so I look forward to this film. I noticed you have worked with Melissa McCarthy a lot in the past, any reason for this? She is always a great character in any films she does, no matter how small, like her role in GO, which I loved.

Richard:
If I had my way, Melissa would be in everything I did. She’s a regular on Gilmore Girls now, so it’s hard to get her out of that to be in movies. We shot this on her summer hiatus.

Not for nothing, but there’s a great pizza place in Ithaca, NY (in the college town section by Cornell) called The Nines. Best pizza in town. Think cross-promotion my friend…

By the way, is there a chance, that The Nines will be shown at the Berlinale Film Festival? If not in the official competition, then maybe in the European Film Market? That would make me a much more happier person than I already am!

So should we expect it to come out May 4, 2007? That’s a Friday BTW.
Oh damn, this makes 10 replies. Sorry.

Thanks, John — for the past few days on my daily walks, I’ve been looking for damn 9’s everywhere…
Is there a 9 on the lamp post? No. On the sidewalk? Nope…
On the neighbors cat?…
Sheeesh…
